Lesson idea implementation:
This is a 1-day lesson with a 3 day group research project (2 day start in class, finish at homework) -- I
will implement SB1 using some of my favorite instructional software. I will introduce the lesson by discussing
cell types and using a video to visual connect the concepts. I am using gizmos on an interactive white board to
demonstrate blood cells as one type of cells. I will also demonstrate how structure begets function by
showing a video on sickle-cell anemia- linking this lesson to the real world. We will choose other gismos to
explore as a class.
Before the lesson, we will have a class discussion then time to write in our science journals about
three things we know about cells- (e.g. list three different cell types, multi- vs unicellular, etc.) and three
things may want to know. We will then discuss organelles and how their structure and function plays a role in
cell life. Here we will use a Gismos simulation of a unicellular paramecium in different solute concentrations
demonstrating how the central vacuole responds. This Gismo is very interactive and the students get to
manipulate the various solute concentrations and see intracellular reactions. The simulation also creates a
table and graph of the student manipulations. Students will describe their specific data and their observations
in their journals. Students will be expected to use key terms discussed and present in the video. For a 3-day
homework project, students will be grouped to research and present an example of a human disease related
to cell function, a specific cell type, or an organelle in the cell like the cell in the simulation, paramecium., and
create a hypothetical cure. Students will be able to choose their specific project and the resources for
research from a list of different educational software as well as presentation format- sway, prezi, powerpoint,
google slides. Students will use cloud-based presentation formats, which allow them to easily collaborate and
manipulate in their browser. We will post their work to our class blog.
