kinematics - the branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of objects without reference to the
forces that cause the motion
2. machine - an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite
function and together performing a particular task
3. mechanism - a system of parts working together in a machine; a piece of machinery
4. motion - the action or process of moving or of changing place or position
5. prototype - an original or first model of something from which other forms are copied or developed
6. dynamics - a branch of applied mathematics (specifically classical mechanics) concerned with the study of
forces and torques and their effect on motion, as opposed to kinematics, which studies the motion of
objects without reference to its causes
7. machine elements - are basic mechanical parts and features used as the building blocks of most machines
8. kinematic diagram - illustrates the connectivity of links and joints of a mechanism or machine rather than
the dimensions or shape of the parts
9. parallel - extending in the same direction, equidistant at all points, and never converging or diverging
10. crank - a part of an axle or shaft bent out at right angles, for converting reciprocal to circular motion and
vice versa
11. linkage - an assembly of bodies connected to manage forces and movement
12. pair - a connection between two bodies that imposes constraints on their relative movement
13. joint - a point at which parts of an artificial structure are joined
14. coupling - a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting
power
15. cam - a rotating or sliding piece in a mechanical linkage
16. gear - a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part to
transmit torque
17. acceleration - the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect to time
18. instantaneous - occurring or done in an instant or instantly
19. relative - considered in relation or in proportion to something else
20. composition - the nature of something's ingredients or constituents
21. velocity - the speed of an object plus its direction
22. axis - an imaginary line about which a body rotates
23. path - a way or track laid down for walking or made by continual treading
24. function - an activity or purpose natural to or intended for a person or thing
25. analysis - detailed examination of the elements or structure of something, typically as a basis for
discussion or interpretation
26. synthesis - combination or composition, in particular
27. structure - the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex
28. proportion - a part, share, or number considered in comparative relation to a whole
29. intermittent - occurring at irregular intervals; not continuous or steady
30. elliptic - relating to or having the form of an ellipse
31. linear acceleration - acceleration caused by a moving body with uniform acceleration in a straight line
32. angular acceleration - a quantitative expression of the change in angular velocity that a spinning object
undergoes per unit time
33. Coriolis acceleration - a quantity that must be added vectorially to the acceleration of a body with respect
to another accelerated body to get the true acceleration of the former
34. relative velocity - the velocity of an object or observer B in the rest frame of another object or observer A
35. drag link - converts rotary motion from a crank arm, to a second bellcrank, usually in an automotive
steering system
36. four-bar linkage - the simplest movable closed chain linkage
37. slider-crank mechanism - used to transform rotational motion into translational motion by means of a
rotating driving beam, a connection rod and a sliding body
38. parallel mechanism - closed-loop mechanism in which the end-effector is connected to the base by at
least two independent kinematic chains
39. cam mechanism - consists of two moving elements, the cam and the follower, mounted on a fixed frame
40. gear mechanism - a mechanism for transmitting motion for some specific purpose
41. compliant mechanism - are flexible mechanisms that transfer an input force or displacement to another
point through elastic body deformation
42. toggle mechanism - are four-bar linkages that are dimensioned so that they can fold and lock
43. scotch yoke - a reciprocating motion mechanism, converting the linear motion of a slider into rotational
motion, or vice versa
44. quick return mechanism - an apparatus that converts circular motion into reciprocating motion in presses
and shaping machines, which are utilized to shape stocks of metal into flat surfaces, throughout
mechanical engineering
45. straight line mechanism - converts rotary motion into straight-line motion
46. elliptic trammel - a mechanism that generates the shape of an ellipse
47. Oldham coupling - a method to transfer torque between two parallel but not collinear shafts
48. Socratic questioning - is disciplined questioning that can be used to pursue thought in many directions
and for many purposes, including: to explore complex ideas, to get to the truth of things, to open up
issues and problems, to uncover assumptions, to analyze concepts, to distinguish what we know from
what we don't know, to follow out logical implications of thought or to control the discussion
49. cooperative learning - a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different
levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject
50. collaborative learning - an educational approach that involves groups of learners working together to
solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product
