Saving Faith: Its Meaning and Object

(Course SMO)

Note to Graders

The student has been encouraged to use his own words while formulating his answers from the textbook. It is OK when he
occasionally quotes from the book directly. If, however, the student is just copying directly from the text repeatedly, then it is
suggested to give a comment to him, to the effect that for all future courses, he is encouraged to use his own words, to
describe his own understanding of what the author has said in the textbook.

We have often quoted from the book directly in this answer key, as an accurate reference to the original text. This has been
done in order to have an accurate standard of comparison for the students answers in his own words. (Otherwise, the
grader would be comparing the students answers in his own words to our answers in our own words, and there would be
a drift away from the authors original meaning in the text.) Therefore, please accept the students answers when they are a
reasonable representation of the general gist of the text; do not require an exact match with our answers provided herein.

There are some questions which ask for a personal response. Please give special attention to thesethey will often generate
rare opportunities for an intimate glimpse into another human soul. We must be prepared to respond with both compassion
and exhortation. Feel free to ask us to send a specific related title (just one) from our catalog to the student as an
encouragement, where appropriate, along with his graded answer sheets.

Part One
Saving Faith: What Is Its Meaning?

Lesson 1 Four Essential Elements of Saving Faith

Please answer the study questions for each lesson from the reading at the beginning of each lesson. Before you begin to
answer the questions, please read the complete text at the beginning of the lesson.
Please read slow enough so you understand what you read.
It is also always good to pray before each lesson, asking the LORD for wisdom to apply what you learn to your life, and to
enable you to love Him with all your mind, heart, soul, and strength...for this is the first commandment (Mark 12:30).

True saving faith is vital. If our faith is defective, then we are deceived, and this deception is fatal (eternally)! For
this reason, it is urgent that we understand the essential elements of saving faith, so we can determine if the faith
we claim to have is the kind of faith described in Colossians 2:12. This kind of faith is the only kind that God
accepts.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 1 7/15/15

Very Important Note: We ask you to always use your own words in your answers. Please do not merely quote the
text for your answer. Rather, read what the text says, think about the meaning of what it says, and summarize the
meaning of the text in your own words for your answer. In this way, you will learn much more than simply a
search/find/quote method for answering the questions.

A. The first essential element of saving faith is A YIELDING THE AUTHORITY OF GOD.

Question 1: God has ordained faith as the medium to save those who believe. Write out the key point and reference for each
of the four verses used to reveal this truth, but before you do, read them carefully, asking God to help you in understanding
what they mean. (page 3 paragraph beginning Let us... through page 4 paragraph beginning Then...)

Note: By key point we mean: keythe phrase within the verse that relates to the topic at hand; pointdo not
merely rewrite the printed words, rather, tell in your own words what the key phrase means, the basic meaning
behind the words.

Answer 1: (1) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that
he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Heb 11:6)
(2) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast. (Eph 2:8-9)
(3) But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for
righteousness. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all
the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the
father of us all. (Rom 4:5, 16)
(4) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom 5:1)

Question 2: Yielding to the authority of God is necessary because we are at enmity against God by nature (Rom. 8:7). What
does enmity against God mean? (page 5 The first...)
Answer 2: We are not subject to the law of God and neither indeed can we be except God work in our hearts.

Question 3: Three verses of Scripture (Isaiah 55:7, Proverbs 28:13, and Isaiah 1:18) are used to describe the turning away
from sin and confession of it to God that are essential for salvation, and Gods desire and ability to forgive sins. Write out
these three verses, and as you do, think about whether or not you have truly obeyed them. No one can be saved and continue
in a lifestyle of self-will, self-pleasing, and self-indulgence. (page 5 two paragraphs beginning I, a rebel...).
Answer 3: (1) Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD,
and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isa 55:7)
(2) He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. (Pro
28:13)
(3) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as
snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (Isa 1:18)

Question 4: Saving faith involves more than just our mind. Other than a change in our thinking, what is absolutely essential to
be truly saved? (page 5 So you...)
Answer 4: Your will must be broken for you to be willing to submit to the authority of God and to the authority of His
Wordagreeing that you are the sinner Gods Word says you are. No man will do this apart from God
breaking his heart by the Holy Spirit. Your will must be broken for you to submit to the authority of God;
your heart must be broken for you to confess unto the living God that you are truly a self-righteous,
rebellious criminal.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 2 7/15/15

B. The second essential element of saving faith is A GENUINE COMING TO CHRIST

Question 5: Why is it necessary to leave all behind to truly come to Christ? (page 6 To come to... through page 7 It is
just...)
Answer 5: Matthew 1:21 reads: Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sinsnot IN
their sins, but FROM their sinsA true coming to Christ for salvation means that I am willing to leave my
sins and follow ChristIf I am not willing to leave my sins, how can I trust Christ to cleanse me from my
sins? In coming to Christ something has to be left behind-your sins, your idols. Coming to Christ not only
involves the abandoning of every false object of confidence, but it also includes and entails the forsaking of
all other competitors for my heart.
Remember, whatever it is, it must be forsaken and left to follow Christ. Only then can true saving faith lay
hold of Christ; for you cannot lay hold of Christ and hold on to sin at the same time, you cannot lay hold of
Christ as long as there is some other competitor.
Our Lord Himself said in Luke 14:33, Whosoever he be of you THAT FORSAKETH NOT ALL THAT
HE HATH, he cannot be my disciple.

Question 6: Luke 14:17, 18-20, 33 (pages 6-7) reveals the urgency of forsaking all that we might be Christs disciples. Saving
faith leaves all behind to come to Christ and to follow Him. Write out these portions of the Word of God, and think carefully
about everything that you must confess and forsake to have the mercy of God in Christ. (To help you, may wish to look at the
list of things on page 6 What is... through page 7 I hear some...) Remember, you cannot lay hold of Christ and hold on to
sin at the same time.
Answer 6: (1) And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
(Luk 14:17)
(2) And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground,
and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of
oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and
therefore I cannot come. (Luk 14:18-20)
(3) So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he can not be my disciple. (Luk 14:33)

C. The third essential element of saving faith is THE COMPLETE SURRENDER OF MY WHOLE BEING AND
LIFE TO THE CLAIMS OF GOD UPON ME.

Question 7: Can you partake of Christs Saviourhood and not His Lordship? Please explain your answer. (page 8, let us
look... through Please dont turn...)
Answer 7: Matthew 11:28-30 reads: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your
souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
This yoke of Christ is part of His salvation. His Lordship is just as much a part of His salvation as His
Saviorhood. How could we partake of His Saviorhood without bowing to His Lordship? We cant! Listen to
Philippians 2:10-11: At the name of Jesus every knee should bow...and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord. Listen again to Colossians 2:6! As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus THE
LORD, so walk ye in him.

Question 8: What does it mean if you say that you are a Christian, but have never truly recognized your own specific sins,
turned away from them in sorrow, and resolved to obey Christ? (page 8 Oh my dear friend...)
Answer 8: Please do not say you are saved; for you to do so is not faith, but blatant presumption. It is to add insult to
injury.
God has the right in His own salvation to dictate the terms on which His gracious and glorious salvation in Christ is to be
received. (See page 8 Please dont turn...) Have you really received the gift of saving faith which enables you to obey the
Lord Jesus Christ no matter what it costs you, and no matter what anyone thinks?

D. The fourth essential element in saving faith is A BELIEVING ON CHRIST WITH THE HEART, WITH THE

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 3 7/15/15

AFFECTION, AND WITH THE WILL.

Question 9: On page 8 (paragraph beginning The fourth...), it is stated that There is no such thing as a saving faith in
Christ where there is no real love for Him. What is the chief characteristic of real love for Christ? Explain in writing why you
think this is so?
Answer 9: There is no such thing as a saving faith in Christ where there is no real love for Him, and by REAL LOVE I
mean a love which is evidenced by OBEDIENCE. As John 15:14 says, Christ acknowledges none to be His
friends except those who do whatsoever He commands them. As unbelief is a species of rebellion, so saving
faith is a complete subjection to God.

Question 10: Please write out the key point and reference for Titus 2:11-13 (quoted on page 9 Godliness?...). Also write
something about what this verse says concerning you.
Answer 10: For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. (Ti
2:11-13)
(Grader: The student was asked to comment upon what this portion of Scripture has to say to them.)

Lesson 2 Believing on Christ

Lesson 1 mentioned four essential elements of saving faith. This lesson seeks to examine the fourth of these
elements more closely: Believing on Christ.

D. Saving Faith is a BELIEVING ON CHRIST WITH THE UNDERSTANDING, AFFECTIONS, AND WILL.

Question 1: Please read carefully the paragraph on page 11 (My dear friend...). Answer honestly for yourself (not on paper)
the questions contained in this paragraph. Then write something about why you answered as you did.
Answer1: [Graders: Please use your own discretion in commenting upon the students answer to this question. The
purpose of this question is to cause the student to examine themselves regarding their experimental
acquaintance with God, His Christ, and His salvation. True saving faith (a real coming to Christ) is more
than a mere lip confession (i.e. a profession of faith). It is a genuine coming to Christ with the whole
being.]

Question 2: Romans 10:9-10 speaks of believing in and with the heart. What does this believing of the heart involve? Include
a description of the three principal faculties of the heart, how they are related to each other, and how they work together in
ones coming to Christ savingly. (See the four paragraphs starting with page 12, It is this...)
Answer 2: We come to Christ with the HEART: the UNDERSTANDING, AFFECTIONS, and WILL. God has so
made us that these three faculties are subordinate one to the other and follow in that order:
UNDERSTANDING, AFFECTION and WILL. One faculty is influenced by the other.
Genesis 3:16 unfolds to us the use of the UNDERSTANDING, the AFFECTIONS, and the WILL. The
woman saw (that is, she perceived) that the tree was good for food.. There we have a conclusion drawn by
her understanding. ...and that it was pleasant to the eyes... There we have the response of her affections.
...and a tree to be desired. There we have the moving of the will. ...she took... There we have the
complete action.
Now, just as Eve sinned with all her being, so true saving faith, a coming to Christ savingly, is something
more than a mere lip confession or professionit is A GENUINE COMING TO CHRIST WITH THE
WHOLE BEING. For true saving faith to operate, the UNDERSTANDING must be enlightened (Eph.
1:18), then by this knowledge the AFFECTIONS are stirred, and they in turn influence and move the WILL.
In this way every faculty of the soul is put forth in coming to Christ savingly.
True saving faith (a real coming to Christ) is more than a mere lip confession (i.e., a profession of faith). It is a
genuine coming to Christ with the whole being.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 4 7/15/15

Question 3: What is the order in which the three principal faculties of the heart work and why they work in that order. (page
13, We have noticed...)
Answer 3: The Holy Spirit must first cause you to understand your deep need of Christ by showing you your fearful
rebellion against God, and that none but Christ can atone for your sins. Second, the Holy Spirit creates in
you your heart a desire after Christ by making you sick of sin and in love with holiness. Third, as you are
awakened and enlightened, having been given by the Holy Spirit to see the glory and excellency of Christ
and His suitability to your need as a lost sinner, then the Holy Spirit draws out your will to set the highest
value upon Christ, to desire Him above all earthly objects, and to come to Him savingly.
There is much more to saving faith than just giving mental assent to some facts about Christ, or having warm feelings about
Him. You must understand your lost condition (your blindness, your rebellion against God, etc.). Without your being made to
understand your perilous condition before God and being granted the desire and power to come to Him through Christ in the
way that His Word tells you to, the exercise of your emotions toward an evangelistic appeal, which causes you to make a
decision for Christ, is a damning delusion.

Question 4: According to Ephesians 2:1, those outside of Christ are described as dead in trespasses and sins. Write out John
5:40, John 6:44, and Psalm 110:3. Explain in writing what you believe to be the significance of these verses, in view of
humanitys state of spiritual death by nature. (page 13, two paragraphs beginning at This leads...)
Answer 4: (1) And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. (John 5:40)
(2) No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
(John 6:44).
(3) Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning:
thou hast the dew of thy youth. (Psalm 110:3)
You will not come to Christ because your UNDERSTANDING is darkened and you see no beauty in Him
that you might desire Him. You will not come to Christ because your UNDERSTANDING is darkened and
you see no beauty in Him that you might desire Him. Therefore, the WILL, which is subordinate to the
darkened UNDERSTANDING and the prostituted AFFECTIONS, cannot act upon its own to come to
Christ savingly. The WILL can only act upon that to which the UNDERSTANDING gives light and the
AFFECTIONS give desire; and because we love sin and darkness more than Christ and light, the WILL
must go after sin. This is the reason for the necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit by the Word of God in
our hearts.

Question 5: Describe in writing our condition by nature, including the state of each of the three principal faculties of the heart
apart from Christ. (page 13, This leads...)
Answer 5: In our fall in Adam we became spiritually dead: our UNDERSTANDING became darkened (Eph 4:18), and
our AFFECTIONS became prostituted so that we see no beauty in Christ that we WILL affectionately go
after Him (Isa 53:2)

Question 6: What connection do the following truths have with our inability to come to Christ by nature:
-the three principal faculties of the heart,
-the order by which they function, and
-why they function in that order?
(see page 13 We have noticed... and You will not...)
Answer 6: [Graders: Please also see the answer given for Question 5. This question was included to reinforce this vital
aspect of divine revelation.]
As we saw in Eph. 2:1, He must quicken us or we will forever lie dead in trespasses and sins. He must give us light
or we will forever lie in darkness. He must convict us or we will forever stay in ignorance. He must draw us
with the cords of love or we will forever stay in the prison of sin and Satan. Did not our Lord tell us in Jn.
6:44, No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him? And this He does by His
Spirit in the hearts and lives of His elect.

Question 7: What does the Holy Spirit do to each of the faculties of the heart of Gods elect to turn them from sin and the
world unto Christ? What instrument does the Spirit of God use to do this? (page 13, You will not...)
Answer 7: He effectually enlightens the UNDERSTANDING, quickens the AFFECTIONS and frees the WILL from the
bondage of sin, inclining it toward God and His Christ.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 5 7/15/15

Question 8: Why must the Holy Spirit enlighten and quicken us and draw out the will so we may be enabled to come to Christ
savingly? (page 13, You will not)
Answer 8: The Holy Spiritovercomes our prejudiced hearts and wins and draws us unto ChristThere can be no
coming to Christ savingly without the understanding being enlightened first. A knowledge of Christ is
essential. We must have some acquaintance with a person before we can love or trust him. No one can come
to Christ while they are ignorant of Him. (Please see Hebrews 11:6 quoted on page 5.) The knowledge
necessary to come to Christ with our understanding is found in the Holy Scriptures alone. Only the Word of
God contains the true doctrine of Christ.

Question 9: What are the key point and reference for each of John 5:39, Romans 10:17, and 2 Timothy 3:15? (page 14, The
question is...)
Answer 9: (1) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (John
5:39)
(2) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom. 10:17)
(3) And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Tim. 3:15)
As you read and answer, ask the LORD to do for you what He did for Job, when he said, Neither have I gone back from the
commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food (Job 23:12). As you read the
Bible, we pray that God, by His Holy Spirit, will show you out of its pages, first yourselfthen Christ.

Question 10: The author say that you might go to hell with an open Bible before you. How is this possible? Meditate upon
Hebrews 2:1-3 in answering (and we recommend long and often in the future too). (page 15, My friend...)
Answer 10: Because you will not search its pages to have understanding of your true condition before God and His
precious gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

LORD, impart unto us Thy grace, that we may give more earnest heed to Thy Holy Scriptures, lest at any time we should let
them slip. How shall we escape, if we neglect the so great salvation that You have mercifully provided in Your own dear
Son? This petition is made in His name and for His sake. Amen.

Lesson 3 The Heart Affections

Lesson three will continue in a detailed examination of the fourth essential element of saving faith, which is
believing on Christ with the heart. Remember that the three principal faculties by which we come to Christ
by faith and lay hold of Him to the saving of our souls are the UNDERSTANDING, the AFFECTIONS,
and the WILL.

Question 1: How does Genesis 3:6 demonstrate the functioning and inter-relationship of the three principal faculties of the
heart? (page 17, two paragraphs starting at The three...)
Answer 1: Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good [mind] for food, and that it was pleasant
[affections] to the eyes, and a tree to be desired [affections] to make one wise, she took [will] of the fruit
thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
True saving faith consists in THE COMPLETE SURRENDER OF MY WHOLE BEING AND LIFE TO
THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST, which means I embrace Christ in all of His offices, as Prophet,
Priest and King. True saving faith consists in A BELIEVING ON CHRIST WITH THE HEART (the
UNDERSTANDING, the AFFECTIONS, and the WILL.)

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 6 7/15/15

Question 2: The Word of God teaches that all men are unable and unwilling to come to Christ savingly unless the LORD
enables them to do so. What does the Holy Spirit do for the elect of God to change their darkened, perverted, and enslaved
condition by nature to enable them to come to Christ in saving faith? In your answer, please include a description of the work
of the Holy Spirit in each of the three principal faculties of the heart. (page 18, three paragraphs starting at For true...)
Answer 2: When the Holy Spirit does come to our dead spirit and soul, He quickens it, makes it alive, and gives to our
UNDERSTANDING the light of the knowledge of the glory of God as revealed in the Christ of the gospel.
Then our AFFECTIONS are drawn out after Christ as the lovely and precious Deliverer, and the WILL is
drawn out to close in savingly with Him.

Question 3: How are the three faculties of understanding, affections, and will apart from Christ, all contrary to God and His
ways by nature? Also, see if you can find these three faculties as they are implied in John 3:19, 29. (page 18, Before this...)
Answer 3: Apart from Christ, we lie dead in trespasses and sins; therefore, our WILL can only choose sin because our
UNDERSTANDING tells us that sin and its pleasures are the best for us, and the AFFECTIONS which
have been prostituted by our darkened UNDERSTANDING love the pleasures of time and sense more than
the pleasures of Christ and heaven. Therefore, the WILL always acts upon this knowledge and these
AFFECTIONS. The WILL is stimulated to choose sin every time.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light,
because their deeds were evil.
John 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth
him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegrooms voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

This lesson will now examine the AFFECTIONS, which is one of the principle faculties of the heart.

Question 4: a. The Bible teaches that the elect come to Christ savingly with their affections. Seven portions of Holy Scripture
are used to reveal this. Please write out the reference and key point of each verse. (page 18 Now as... through the next page)
b. Remember that the Lord Jesus says, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy mind. This is the first and great commandment (Mat 22:37-38). Please describe the degree to which your affections have
been drawn out to love the Lord in that manner.
Answer 4a: (1) For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh
by love (Gal 5:6).
(2) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is
given unto us (Rom 5:5).
(3) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according
to his purpose (Rom 8:28).
(4) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which
God hath prepared for them that love him (1Co 2:9).
(5) Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at
that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing (2Ti 4:8).
(6) Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in
God (Col 3:2-3).
(7) Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the
Lord hath promised to them that love him (Jam 1:12).
4b. Personal answer
[Graders: hopefully this will be an opportunity to see the students own heart, and respond accordingly
with discipleship feedback.]

Question 5: Read page 19 paragraph Did you know with particular care. We pray that you will not fall under the curse of
God by trusting in an empty profession of faith, without loving Him in deed and in truth. Think about Christs words in
Matthew 15:8. Please write about why you think that God would curse everyone who does not love the Lord Jesus Christ in
sincerity.
Answer 5: Mat 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their
heart is far from me. Christ will have nothing less than the whole man. Our AFFECTION (Col 3:2)
singularthe whole man, must be set on Him.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 7 7/15/15

Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

This lesson will now seek to show you how the Holy Spirit inclines our affections unto Christ.

Question 6: There are at least seven ways in which the Holy Spirit inclines our affections unto Christ. Please list as many of
them as you can find. (page 20 In the second place... through the end of the chapter). Also, write out the four portions of
Holy Scripture that are used in this section and include the references. Remember, it is from the Word of God that the Holy
Spirit produces true saving faith in the hearts of Gods elect, thereby drawing out their affections after the Lord Jesus.
Answer 6: The Holy Spirit opens our HEARTS to:
(1) the preciousness of Christ in His condescension from heavens heights to earths depths to die in our place (1Pe
2:7)
(2) behold in the blood of Christ a cleansing (1Pe 1:18-19)
(3) behold the work that Christ performed in keeping the law perfect in our behalf
(4) dying beneath the wrath of that broken law (Gal 3:13)
(5) see that the perfect righteousness of Christ has been imputed to our account in heaven
(6) see that the justice of God has been satisfied for our sins
(7) see that Christ has been made unto us wisdom for our ignorance, righteous ness for our guiltiness, sanctification
for our vileness, and redemption for our enslavement (1Co 1:30).

(a) Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the
builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner (1Pe 2:7).
(b) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot (1Pe 1:18-19).
(c) Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one
that hangeth on a tree (Gal 3:13).
(d) But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and
redemption (1Co 1:30).

Question 7: Read page 20 paragraph It is in... carefully. Has the Holy Spirit freed your will to truly say yes to the Lord
Jesus Christ, yes to His cross, yes to bearing His reproach, yes to the strait and narrow way, and yes to a life of self-
denial? Please write something about what this yielding to God and His ways would mean in your own life and circumstances.
Answer 7: [Graders: That which is contained in Luke 14:25-35 is the Gospel. It is presented under no other terms by
Christ, nor His apostles. This question was included in the desire to effect a process of biblical self-
examination on the part of the student. This may be a good occasion to provide Scriptural counsel to
students not demonstrating a true comprehension of Biblical discipleship. (see Prov. 20:5.)]
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. (Prov. 20:5)

How would you answer the questions in the last paragraph of the reading (O my friend...) when you are all alone with God?
Remember, no one can lie to God successfully. If your conscience compels you to answer no to these questions, you are yet
in your sins as the workbook says, and the wrath of God abides on you (please see John 3:36). Sincerely ask the LORD to
have mercy upon you and to grant you saving faith, so that you can and will come to Christ in truth.

Lesson 4 The Heart Will

This lesson will seek to investigate further the fourth essential element of saving faith, which is A
BELIEVING ON CHRIST WITH THE WHOLE HEART. Lessons 2 and 3 examined the first two principal
faculties of the heart in detail. The present lesson will seek to answer this very important question: How do
we come to Christ savingly with the third principal faculty of the heart, which is the will?

Answer 1: The popular idea now prevailing, and which is taught from the majority of pulpits, is that man has a free
will, that salvation comes to the sinner through his making a decision for Christ and believing with his
free will that Christ died for him, and that all a man has to do to be saved is to will it and it is done.

Question 2: Please write the key point and reference for each of the portions quoted on page 23: Romans 9:16, John 1:12-13,
and Romans 3:11, which show that the idea treated in question 1 is untrue.
Answer 2: (1) So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. (Rom. 9:16)
(2) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his
name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John
1:12-13)
(3) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. (Rom. 3:11)

Question 3: Why is there none that seek after God? (page 23 The popular idea...)
Answer 3: The WILL of man, being controlled by his darkened UNDERSTANDING and his prostituted
AFFECTIONS, will never seek God apart from the quickening and saving power of the Holy Spirit working
in him.

Question 4: What is the will? (page 23 The question...)

Answer 4: The WILL is the faculty of choice, the immediate cause of all action.

Question 5: What does the exercise of choice involve? (page 24 The question...)
Answer 5: Choice necessarily implies the refusal of one thing and the acceptance of another. The positive and the
negative must both be present to the mind before there can be any choice. In every act of the WILL there is
a preference, the desiring of one thing rather than another. Where there is no preference, but complete
indifference, there is no action by the WILL. To will is to choose, and to choose is to decide between two or
more alternatives.

Question 6: Please explain why mans will (by nature) cannot be called free (page 24, two paragraphs beginning But
there...).
Answer 6: There is something which influences the choice, something which determines the decision. Therefore, the
WILL cannot be sovereign, because it is the servant of that something. The WILL cannot be both sovereign
and servant; it cannot be both cause and effect; it can only make its choice when that something influences
it. Therefore, the WILL cannot be called free.
That something which influences the WILL to make the choice that it does is, as we have showed you in past
messages, the depraved, darkened UNDER STANDING (Eph. 4:18) and the depraved, prostituted
AFFECTIONS (Isa. 53:2).

Question 7: Read page 24, paragraph beginning This brings... What does it mean that man is totally depraved? In this
paragraph, nine passages from Gods Word are referred to that describe the total depravity of every man, woman, and child on
earth by nature. Man left to himself will always choose evil. Please write out the reference and key point for each verse of
Gods Word referred to in this section.
Answer 7: Man is totally depraved! that is, has his moral being, faculties, and character been so corrupted by his fall in
Adam that he does not now possess the moral willingness to choose that which is good, righteous and holy.
(1) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh
after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth
good, no, not one. (Rom. 3:10-12)
(2) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to
the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the
children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our
flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as
others. (Eph. 2:1-3)

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 9 7/15/15

(3) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because
their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his
deeds should be reproved. (John 3:19-20)
(4) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh
after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth
good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of
asps is under their lips. (Rom. 3:10-13)
(5) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is
none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were
any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is
none that doeth good, no, not one. (Psalm 14:1-3)
(6) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23)
(7) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jer. 17:9)
(8) For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, for nications, murders. (Mark 7:21)
(9) Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do
evil. (Jer. 13:23)

Question 8: The four paragraphs beginning on page 24 (To try...) speak of three different men, each one of them having a
different kind of will. Who are these three men? What is the difference in their wills?
Answer 8: To try and bring this out more clearly for our understanding, let us look at the human WILL in three different
men:
(1) UNFALLEN ADAM: In unfallen Adam, the WILL was free, free in both directions: free toward good and free
toward evil. Adam was created in a state of innocency: his WILL was therefore in a condition of moral
balance; that is, in Adam there was no constraining bias toward good or evil.
(2) THE SINNER: But with the sinner (which is you and I, the descendants of fallen Adam), it is different. The
sinner is born with a WILL that is not in a condition of moral balance, because there is in us a heart that is
deceitful above all things and desperately wicked (Jer 17:9), and this gives us a bias toward evil.
(3) THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: So, too, with the Lord Jesus Christ it was far different. He also differed from
unfallen Adam. The Lord Jesus Christ could NOT SIN because He was the Holy One of God. Before He
was born into this world it was said to Mary, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the
Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that HOLY THING which shall be born of thee shall be
called the Son of God (Luk 1:35). Speaking reverently, the WILL of the Son of Man was not in a condition
of moral balance, that is, capable of turning toward either good or evil. The WILL of the Lord Jesus was
biased toward that which is good, because side by side with His eternal deity.

Question 9: Explain how the will of the sinner is described on page 25 in the paragraph beginning In the light...
Answer 9: In the case of fallen man, whose heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, we have a WILL
which is biased toward evil, and therefore is free in one direction only, namely, in the direction of evil.
The sinners WILL is enslaved because it is in bondage to, and is the servant of, a depraved heart.

Question 10: By way of review, what is the work of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the two paragraphs on page 27 (beginning
Yes...).
Answer 10: The work of the Holy Spirit is to give us UNDERSTANDING of the truth, a new heart to love Christ with
the AFFECTION, and to believingly close in with Christ with a WILL freed by His power.

Lesson 5 Genuine Coming to Christ

Gods Word that are used to demonstrate it.
b. Why do you think that God uses all of these human activities to describe His gift of faith? (see page 30 How
gracious...)

Answer 3: LOOK
(1) Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. (Isa. 45:22)
(2) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking
unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Heb. 12:1-2)
(3) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of
the world. (John 1:29)
(4) Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (Rom. 4:25)

HEAR
(1) Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with
you, even the sure mercies of David. (Isa. 55:3)
(2) Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of
God: and they that hear shall live. (John 5:25)

TAKE
(1) And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And
whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Rev. 22:17)
(2) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his

MOUTH
(1) Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Matt. 7:7)
(2) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Rom. 10:13)
(3) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation. (Rom. 10:9-10)

God gives us such an array of descriptions so that we may know how to come to Christ savingly!...With the FEET we
walk and stand in faith. With the HANDS we take and receive in faith. With the EYES we behold by faith
Him Who is invisible. With the EARS we hear His voice by faith as He speaks to us out of His Word. With
the MOUTH we call upon Him in faith. And then, with all our affections, described as the HEART, we
believe and trust Him as He is lifted up out of the Word by His Spirit.

Question 4: There is a Scriptural description of faith given on page 30 (Now in ...). Please write the key point of the Bible
verse used and give the reference.
Answer 4: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Heb. 11:1)

Question 5: What three statements are made, seeking to reveal the meaning of saving faith (page 30 Now in...)?
Search your heart as to whether or not the LORD has given to you true faith...the kind of faith you have
been learning about in this lesson.

Answer 5: CONFIDENCE in the Lords character and motives, CONFIDENCE in His ability to perform all that He said
He would do, and the ASSURANCE that He cannot lie; for He is the faithful and true witness (Rev. 1:5).

Question 6: The Word of God is the foundation of faith, according to Romans 10:17, the faith that saves gives assent to the
whole gospel. What two great truths concerning the Lord Jesus Christ are spoken of in this section that true faith
acknowledges as vital? (page 30 The faith...) Also, write the reference and key point of the Scripture verse used near the
end of the paragraph to reveal these truths.
Answer 6: It acknowledges (1) Christs death as the only sufficient means of redeeming the soul from eternal death in
hell; (2) His resurrection as the sufficient power in the gospel to save, keep and give victory over sin. Who
was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (Rom. 4:25)

16 examples of the things which saving faith draws from Christ. Please list as many of them as you can find.
Answer 7: Saving faith draws from Christ: (1) justification; (2) righteousness; (3) peace; (4) joy; (5) deliverance; (6)
mercy; (7) grace; (8) hope; (9) strength; (10) blessings; (11) guidance; (12) forgiveness.
For victory over: (13) sin (14) self (15) Satan (16) the world.

Part Two
Saving Faith: Who Is Its Object?

Lesson 6 All of Christ

At least five individuals in the Word of God are referred to, as they set forth the Lord Jesus Christ Himself
as the only worthy Object of saving faith.

Question 1: Who is the first of these divinely-commissioned spokesmen, mentioned on page 34? Write the reference and
summary of his message, from the Scripture verse used.

have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts
2:36, 38)
(2)Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

Question 3: Who is the third man spoken of, who preached Christ? (page 34 We find...) Please briefly describe what he did
and how he did it.
Answer 3: Philip the evangelist: We find in Acts 8 the story of Philip the evangelist, being sent to Gaza to instruct the
Ethiopian eunuch. And how did he instruct him? Philip took the very Scripture which the eunuch was
reading (Isa. 53) and began to preach unto him JESUS

Question 4: Who is the fourth ambassador of Christ mentioned? (five paragraphs beginning on page 35 As we go...)Write
the references and key point of the verses quoted in this section from Acts 13, Acts 16, and Hebrews 12:1-2.
Answer 4: Paul. (1) Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the
forgiveness of sins: and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be
justified by the law of Moses. (Acts 13:38-39)
(2) Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. (Acts 16:31)
(3) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking
unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Heb. 12:1, 2)

Question 5: Who is referred to on page 36 (Also, in...)? Please write the reference and key point of John 17:3.

whom thou hast sent. (John 17:3)

Question 6: A number of things are mentioned that are NOT proper objects of saving faith. List as many of them as you can
find. Can you think of any others that are not specified in your workbook? If so, list these as well. (See the five paragraphs
beginning on page 34 Let us...)

Answer 6: (1) Not to themselves (2) not to their conviction (3) not to the church (4) not the law of Moses (5) not to
some priest (6) not to some preacher (7) not to some church (8) not to a set of rules (9) or others that the
student may think of which are not included in the text, such as not to their faith.

Question 7: In Acts 16, Paul and Silas said to the Philippian jailer, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
Each part of the name Lord Jesus Christ is extremely important. Please write about the significance of these three aspects of
the name of the Son of God and why they must all be embraced if He is to be the Object of our faith. (page 35 Also,
when...)
Answer 7: He was to see in the LORD, His King and Ruler; he was to see in JESUS, his Savior and High Priest and he
was to see in CHRIST Gods anointed One Who was to teach him. The object of his faith was to be the
whole Savior, the whole Deliverer in all of His offices: as Prophet to teach him, as Priest to die for him, and
as Lord to rule over him.

Question 8: True saving faith must have the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (in all of His offices) as its Object. What is the great
danger that many fall into in seeking to exercise faith, of which we are warned here? (page 35 Let me...)
Answer 8: For our faith to be true saving faithit must have in view the Person of Christ Himself, not the fruits of
salvation, not what He gives, but His Person.

Question 9: What does it mean to know Christ? Eight portions of Scripture used which help to answer this question. Write the
reference and key point of each (page 36 To know...)
Answer 9: (1) To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. (Eph. 1:6).
(2) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus_ (Eph. 2:6)
(3) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we
should walk in them. (Eph 2:10)
(4) But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. (Eph. 2:13)
(5) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light_ (Eph. 5:8)
(6) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after
the Spirit. (Rom. 8:1)
(7) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 8:39)
(8) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become
new. (2 Cor. 5:17)

Question 10: What are some of the blessings received by those who have the Lord Jesus Christ as the Object of their faith?
There are three portions of Scripture quoted which pertain to this issue. Write out these three portions of Gods Word and as
you do, ask yourself honestly if they describe your life and experience. (page 36 What a blessed...)
Answer 10: They and they alone are (1)accepted in Him, (2)known of Him (3)and blessed by Him.
(1) I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in
the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Gal. 2:20)
(2) My Beloved is mine, and I am His. (Song of Solomon 2:16)
(3) Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by
faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we
glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and
experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by
the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Rom. 5:1-5)

Lesson 7 The Surety of the New Covenant

This lesson will seek to set forth the Lord Jesus Christ (the Object of true saving faith) as THE SURETY
OF THE NEW COVENANT, as he is seen in Hebrews 8:6, 2 Corinthians 1:20, 2 Samuel 23:5, and many
other Scriptures.

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 14 7/15/15

Question 1: What is the everlasting covenant? Provide as much detail as you can. (page 39 When we...)
Answer 1: When we think of the everlasting covenant as revealed in the Scripture, we must go back to the ages before
the fall. We find there in the Counsels of Eternity, that covenant that was made between the Father and the
Son. There, foreseeing the ruin that was to come upon the human race through the awful power of sin, God
the Father entered into a covenant with His beloved Son. There the Lord Jesus, our Great Shepherd of the
sheep, signed the covenant as our Surety in His own precious blood: (Heb. 13:20). There, on the condition
that Christ would assume the liabilities and nature of His fallen people, the Father guaranteed to give Him a
complete salvation, ordered in all things and sure (Isa. 55:3) for His bloodbought people. Yes, He promised
to give to Christ as our Representative, all those for whom He died as a reward to share His glory and be
heirs with Him in His kingdom, (Jn. 17:2, 6, 11, 22, 23, 24; Rom. 8:17; Eph. 1:3; Heb. 2:10-11).

Question 2: On page 39 (On the part...) at least five things are mentioned that the Lord Jesus Christ did as the Surety of His
people. Please list as many of them as you can find.
Answer 2: On the part of Christ as our Surety-since we have sinned and come short of the glory of God-it was
necessary that
(1) He should take the sinners place.
(2) He should stoop from His high and exalted position and become not only a man, but a despised and a rejected
Man, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isa. 53:1-5).
(3) He was to die upon the cross as a Sacrifice for the sins of His people who had forfeited all claims to God and His
salvation.
(4) It meant that Christ was to be made sin for us so we might become the right eousness of God in Him (2 Cor.
5:21).
(5) It meant that Christ was to go to the cruel cross and bear the taunts and cruelties of men, the pains of death and
the assaults and insults of the devil and all his legions. It meant that Christ would pay the supreme sacrifice
for His people, so the justice and holiness of God would be satisfied.

Question 3: What is the significance of Christs rising from the dead on the third day? (page 40 Not only...)
Answer 3: Not only was Christ to die beneath the sins of those for whom He became Surety, but He was to take their
sins far away into the grave and leave them there, showing that He had paid for them in full by His rising
the third day.

Question 4: What important office did Christ fill after His resurrection? Please describe this role and explain how it benefits
the people of God. (page 40 Not only...)
Answer 4: Christ was to come forth as the First-born from among the dead, so for the ages to come He would sit upon
the throne in heaven, interceding for them as a merciful and faithful High Priest. Yes, as part of the
covenant, He would undertake for them as High Priest, bearing the burdens of His people, making continual
intercession for them, enduring with much patience their many infirmities and failures, and guarding them
with unceasing love until His work might be completed in all their lives.

Question 5: Describe the Heavenly Fathers part in the everlasting covenant. (page 40 Let us...)
Answer 5: On account of the fulfillment of these conditions met by Christ, the Father promised He would give eternal
life to all who received His Son and came to Him by faith. He promised He would create within them a new
heart, freely forgiving and justifying them from all their transgressions (Ezek. 36:26). To ensure all of this,
He promised to send His Holy Spirit Who would work in the hearts and lives of each one for whom Christ
died (Jn. 16:7-11).

Question 6: What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the everlasting covenant, as promised by God the Father? Be as specific as
you can. (two paragraphs beginning page 40 Let us...)
Answer 6: The role of the Holy Spirit in the everlasting covenant, as promised by God the Father is:
(1) the Holy Spirit works in the hearts and lives of each one for whom Christ died (Jn. 16:7-11). The Holy Spirit
would sanctify and perfect them in holiness. He would supply them with all needed grace, power, love, and
blessing, imparting to them a new, divine nature that would hunger and desire after Christ.
(2) the Spirit takes up His abode in them and witnesses with their spirits that they have indeed been made heirs of

His glory and partakers of His divine nature (Rom. 8:15-17; II Pet. 1:4)
(3) the Holy Spirit writes this new covenant upon the hearts of each one who comes to Christ so they would endure
to the end (Heb. 8:10)
(4) the Holy Spirit takes the things of Christ and reveals them unto these precious, believing sinners so they would be
taken up with the Object of their faith, the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 16:13,14)
(5) the Holy Spirit at last raises them from the dead, glorifying them with the Lord Jesus in the ages to come with a
place of honor and blessing higher than Adam ever knew, higher than angels shall ever possess, more than
compensating for all the evils and miseries of the fall

Question 7: What was Christs answer to His Father when the everlasting covenant of grace was proposed? Please write the
reference and key point of Holy Scripture used to reveal this. (two paragraphs beginning page 41 I know...)
Answer 7: He willingly and joyously agreed to the terms of the everlasting covenant.
(1) Lo, in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my
heart. (Psa. 40:7-8)
(2) Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from
me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (Jn. 10:17-
18)

Question 8: What do you believe to be the significance of Romans 10:4 in connection with Christs finished work of
redemption? (page 41 Our blessed...)
Answer 8: For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. (Rom. 10:4)
Our blessed Lord and Surety came, lived, loved, and died, and at last could say in His closing prayer as He
committed His work to the Father, I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do (Jn. 17:4); and on
the cross He could shout, It is finished (Jn. 19:30). Yes, it is finished; Christ has finished the work of
redemption; praise the Lord!

Question 9: How do we know that God the Father is satisfied with the work of Christ as set forth in the everlasting covenant?
At least four principal evidences of this are stated. List as many of them as you can find and explain (as well as you are able)
why these things prove that God the Father is indeed satisfied with Christ and His work of redemption. (five paragraphs
beginning page 41 The question...)
Answer 9: (1) He raised Him from the dead and set Him at His own right hand, the place of honor and glory. By raising
Christ from the dead, the Father declared forever that the covenant had been fulfilled, the conditions met,
and the great redemption completed.
(2) The Father was satisfied with the Suretys work because when Christ returned to heaven, He sent the love-gift of
the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to His people. Acts 2:33: Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see
and hear.
(3) The salvation of every believer since that day has been a further seal that the covenant is satisfied and forever
holds fast.
(4) Every answer to prayer in the name of Jesus and every blessing that comes to our life are echoes from the cross:
It is finished.

Question 10: All of the blessings of God are found in the everlasting covenant through Christ. How do Gods people come
into this covenant? Please write the reference and key point of John 17:2 and John 17:11 which are quoted in this section.
These verses will help in providing the answer to this extremely vital question. (page 42 The salvation...)
Answer 10: It is not because we have a covenant with God, but our Lord Jesus has; and we are accepted in Him as we
come to Him by faith, looking only to our Surety, the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, it is all in Christ. We come
into His covenant by His power, for He could say to the Father in John 17:2, Thou hast given him power
over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And then He could add vs.
11, Keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

Lesson 8 Christs Willingness to Save Sinners
This lesson will, by Gods enablement, seek to set forth Christ (the Object of saving faith) as He is revealed
in His willingness to save sinners.

Question 1: Write the reference and key point of Philippians 3:7-10. (page 44 As we...) Ponder over whether or not this
portion of Holy Scripture describes the work of God in your own life. The statement in your workbook is true which says, as
with the apostle Paul, so with every sinner whom God saves: he is made to hunger and thirst after the Person of Christ as He is
revealed in the Scriptures and lifted up in His offices as Prophet, Priest and King.
Answer 1: But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss
for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things,
and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own
righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is
of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his
sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. (Phil. 3:7-10)

Question 2: What is the first area in which Christ showed His willingness to save His people? How was this aspect of Christs
willingness demonstrated? (page 44 First...)
Answer 2: IN HIS WILLINGNESS TO BECOME A MAN
The Lord Jesus Christ agreed to become the Surety of the everlasting covenant and to die in the place of His
people[He demonstrated this] by submitting to such costly terms to redeem us. Therefore, this[is]
something solid for saving faith to lay hold of, for it shows His love for poor sinners.

Question 3: What is the second way in which Christ manifested His willingness to save sinners? Hebrews 2:16, Romans 8:3,
and John 1:14 are used to reveal this. Write the reference and key point for each of these portions of Gods Word as they
appear in this section. (page 45 In the second...)
Answer 3: IN HIS WILLINGNESS TO ASSUME OUR NATURE
(1) For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. (Heb. 2:16)
(2) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of
sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. (Rom. 8:3)
(3) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father,) full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Question 4: The whole life of Christ upon earth was a demonstration of the desire of His heart to save His people from the pit
of destruction and to be in union and communion with them. Please write the reference and key point for Luke 4:18-19 as it
appears in this paragraph. This portion of Scripture is a divine summarization of the Lord Jesus Christs ministry on earth.
(page 45 The whole...)
Answer 4: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent
me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to
set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19)

Question 5: What aspect of Christs ministry on earth is spoken of on page 45 (His doctrine...)? Three portions of the Word
of God are quoted in this section, which contain some of His gracious invitations to sinners. Write the reference and key
message of each.
Answer 5: His doctrine, His teaching.
(1) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:28)
(2) In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me,
and drink. (John 7:37)
(3) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I
have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
(Luke 13:34)

Question 6: What is the third (and greatest) evidence of Christs willingness to save sinners? List all of the reasons for the
Lord Jesus Christs death upon the cross that you can find. (page 46 But I...)
Answer 6: His DEATH. The death of Christ is the fullest demonstration that He loves sinners and desires to save them
and have communion with them.
(1) He was put to death in the flesh; His body was violently rent asunder by the wrath of both man and God while He
became sin for us.
(2) He died as curse for us, as a sin offering in the cursed death of the cross, because He bore our sins.
Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a
sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness
of God in him.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath
laid on him the iniquity of us all.
(3) Our sins were put upon Him as He hung in our place to pay in full the sin-debt that we owe to Gods broken law.

Question 7: Why did the Lord Jesus cry out My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (In other words, why was He
forsaken by His Father at that time?) Please provide as much detail as you can. Also, write something about what these things
mean to you personally. (two paragraphs beginning on page 46 But seeing...)
Answer 7: His very soul was made an offering for sin, and it made Him cry unto God for the deliverance from sin to no
avail, for He was the sinners SubstituteGod is of purer eyes than to behold sin. He lays it on the back of
His son and punishes it, even when He finds it upon His own Son.

Question 8: How could our vileness, wretchedness, and guiltiness in the sight of God be a good reason for coming to Christ?
(page 46 I hear...)
Answer 8: He calls for the halt, the blind, the withered, the lost, and the sinful to come unto Him and find salvation,
deliverance, hope, and mercy. Your very vileness commends you unto God, for He came to save sinners
from their sin.

Question 9: Please list all of the benefits of Christs death that you can find. (page 47 See in...)
Answer 9: Deliverance from: (1) sin (2) self (3) Satan (4) the world (5) a complete righteousness for guilty sinners! (6)
FULL PAYMENT to the justice of God for the broken law. (7) A cleansing from all sin. (8) A putting away
of sin forever.

Question 10: Write something about why it is so important to come to Christ just as we are, wholly as we are, and only as we
are. (page 47 I hear...)
Answer 10: [Grader: The students answer to this question should provide insight into his degree of spiritual
apprehension regarding his own condition, and his understanding of the nature of Jehovah and His
salvation.]

Lesson 9 We Must Know Christ

Question 1: Knowing the Lord Jesus Christ should be the one desire of every human soul. Six aspects of knowing Him are
mentioned on page 49 (Everywhere in...). Describe these six blessings as they appear in this section.
Answer 1: (1) To know Him is to have LIFE, eternal life.
(2) To know Him is to have your sins forgiven and blotted out forever before the face of our sovereign God by the
precious blood of our Redeemer.
(3) To know Him is to be partaker of the divine nature of Christ and to have the love of God shed abroad in our
hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Phi 3:20-21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus
Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to
the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
1Jo 3:2 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know
that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
(4) To know Him is to be made suitable to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.
(5) To know Him is to be delivered from the power of darkness and to be translat ed into the kingdom of Gods dear
Son (Col. 1:12,13).
(6) To know Christ is to know the power of His cleansing blood, and to know the preciousness of that blood which
flowed from Emmanuels veins.

Question 2: Read thoughtfully the question asked on page 49 (Do you...). Alone in the presence of God, how would you
answer it? Please write something about this.
Answer 2: [Grader: This question was formulated to elicit a candid response from the student to the questions raised on
page 14. The grader should exercise spiritual discretion in offering additional information, counsel, etc.]

Question 3: It is through faith in Christs blood that all of the benefits of His death become ours. List all of the reasons why
the blood of Christ is necessary and list all of its benefits that are mentioned. (three paragraphs beginning on page 49 In 1
Peter...)
Answer 3: In 1 Peter 1:18-19 we read, Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things...but
with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Yes, it is by the
redeeming blood of Christ that we are saved. It is through faith in His shed blood on the cross that we are
cleansed from all sin. Therefore, the Scriptures declare that with out the shedding of blood there is no
remission for sin (Heb. 9:22).
We hear the Lord speaking to our hearts about the blood of Christ in these words: When I see the blood, I
will pass over you (Exo. 12:13); or, When I see the blood of Christ applied to your heart by faith, then I
will pass over you. Christs death on the cross makes an atonement for the lost soul. And that death is
manifested in the shed blood of Christ. It is the blood of Christ that reconciles you unto God. It is the
precious blood of Jesus Christ, Gods Son, that cleanseth from all sin (1Jo. 1:9).

Question 4: The Word of God says, When I see the blood, I will pass over you (Exo 12:3). It is not when we see the blood
(sprinkled upon the door posts of our hearts by faith) but when God sees it, that His condemnation and judgment no longer
rests upon us . Please write something about why this is so important to remember (see page 50 We hear...).
Answer 4: Christs death on the cross makes an atonement for the lost soul. And that death is manifested in the shed
blood of Christ. This is important to remember because salvation is all Gods finished work, not ours.

On page 50 (The questions are...) through page 52, eight aspects of the power of Christs precious blood are delineated,
in the hope that the LORD will use them to reveal the answer to two central questionsWherein does the power of the
precious blood of Christ lie? and How is it set forth in the Holy Scriptures as that which cleanses guilty sinners?

Question 5: What is the first characteristic of the power of Christs blood ? Please explain why this feature of Christs blood is
necessary for salvation. (page 50 First...)
Answer 5: First the precious blood of Christ has A REDEEMING POWER because it redeems us from the curse of the
law. Gal. 3:13: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is writ
ten, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.

Question 6: What is the second attribute of the power of Christs blood? Why is this feature of Christs blood important?
(page 50 The power...)
Answer 6: The POWER of the precious blood of Christ lies also in its ATONING EFFICACY, for it is the blood which
makes an atonement for the soul. In the Old Testament God never forgave sin apart from the shedding of

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 19 7/15/15

blood; the blood alone put away sin. God never forgave sin apart from a substitute, a sacrificial offering; it
was only by blood that a sinner could appease a holy God.

Question 7:
a. What is the third aspect of the power of Christs blood? (page 51 The value...)
b. Why is this characteristic essential?
c. Why do you think that good works and/or the prayers of saints, priests, and ministers are totally insufficient and
unacceptable for the cleansing of the soul from sin?
Answer: (7a) The VALUE of the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ lies in its POWER TO CLEANSE US FROM
ALL SIN. These precious words are found in I John 1:7: The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us
from all sin. Not our good works, not the prayers of saints, or priests, or ministers, but the precious blood
of Christ cleanses us from all sin.
(7b) It is on the basis of this shed blood that we are given the invitation, Come, now, and let us reason together,
saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool (Isa. 1:18). Then I cry, O precious blood, which removes the hell-stains of
abundant iniquity and permits me to stand accepted in the Beloved, notwithstanding all the many ways in
which I have rebelled against my God! It was because of the cleansing effect of the blood that David could
cry in Psa. 51:2,7: Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. Purge me with
hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
(7c) This is a personal response to elicit the students comprehension of the worth of Christs blood.

Question 8: What is the fourth characteristic of the power of Christs blood 2? Why is this feature important, especially as it
pertains to our lives from day to day? (page 51 Further...)
Answer 8: (1) The value of the precious blood of Christ lies in its PRESERVING POWER. We have many examples of
this in the Old Testament. When the children of Israel were in Egypt the night the Death Angel passed over,
they were preserved and delivered because they had put the blood of that slain lamb upon the door posts of
their homes.
(2) So it is with those who know Christ and His cross work. They alone are preserved by the blood of Christ day by
day from the power of indwelling sin, as well as from the wrath to come.

Question 9: What is the fifth aspect of the power of Christs blood? What is the function of this characteristic? (page 51
Again, the...)
Answer 9: The value of the precious blood of Christ lies in its MELTING POWER. We read in Zech. 12:10 that when
a poor sinner looks by faith upon Christ Whom he has pierced with his sins, then he shall mourn for Him
with such a mourning as one does at the death of his firstborn. Oh how precious this truth is, that one sight
by faith of a bleeding Savior will break the heart of the most hard-hearted sinner, because he sees in Christ,
as He is lifted up out of the Word of God, a precious Savior for him. He sees His love and grace and beauty,
and begins to cry after Him.

Question 10: What is the sixth capacity of the power of Christs blood? How does this feature benefit the LORDs people?
(two paragraphs beginning page 52 Also the...)
Answer 10: The value of the precious blood of Christ lies in its PLEADING POWER. We read in Heb. 12:24 that we
come to the blood of sprinkling that speakethcompassion to the poor, repenting, believing sinner. His
blood speaks peace to the troubled, sin-tossed soul.

Question 11: What is the seventh aspect of the power of Christs blood? Why is this attribute so vital? Please write the
reference and key point of Hebrews 10:19 used in this section to underscore this truth. (page 52 But I...)
Answer 11: The value of the blood of Christ lies in its POWER TO GIVE US ENTRANCE INTO THE VERY
PRESENCE OF GOD. In Heb. 10:19 we read, Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the
holiest by the blood of Jesus boldness to come to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find
grace to help in time of need. By His precious blood we have access by faith into this grace wherein we
stand and can come into the very presence of God to worship Him and offer the sacrifice of our lips, which
is thanksgiving, finding that mercy and that grace which is so greatly needed in every time of need!

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 20 7/15/15

Question 12: What is the eighth characteristic of the power of Christs blood? How does this particular feature benefit the
people of God? (page 52 Last...)
Answer 12: The value of the blood of Christ lies in its OVERCOMING POWER. Listen to Rev. 12:11, And they
overcame him Satan, the accuser of the brethren by the blood of the Lamb. By that blood we have the
victory over our enemy, the devil.

Lesson 10 Looking unto Jesus

This lesson will endeavor, by the enablement of Gods Spirit, to set forth Christ as the Object of saving faith
by the words looking unto Jesus in Hebrews 12:2. These three words are described in your workbook as
the secret of the Christian life.

Question 1: List all of the benefits of looking unto Jesus that you can find. (page 54 As we...)
Answer 1: (1) LOOKING UNTO JESUS shall bring us home to Him at last. We are to
(2) LOOK UNTO JESUS in the Holy Scriptures to learn Who He is, What He has done and what He gives in His
finished work of redemption.
(3) LOOK UNTO JESUS and His full satisfaction in our behalf to Gods spoken law (Gal. 3:13, Heb. 1:3),
vindicating Gods justice, His name, and His character.
(4) Look unto Him for all the needs and wants of our never-dying soul.

Question 2: We are to look unto Jesus in His three principal offices. What are these three offices and what work does Christ
do in each of them? (page 55 We are to...in His...)
Answer 2: As Prophet He teaches us (Acts 3:22); as Priest He is our Substitute, Savior, and Intercessor (Rom. 8:34);
and as King He rules over us (Eph. 1:20-23) and delivers us from the power of sin (Rom. 6:14), Satan (Col.
1:13), and the world (Gal. 1:4).

Question 3: We are to look unto Jesus as the GREAT I AM, who was sent by God the Father to be the way, the truth, and
the life for His people (John 14:6). This section contains six other portions of Holy Scripture in which the Lord Jesus Christ
refers to Himself as I am Please write the reference and key point of each. Why are these attributes of Christ vital to our
salvation? (page 55 We are to...as the...)
Answer 3: (1) And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:35)
(2) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in
darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:35)
(3) Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he
live. (John 11:25)
(4) I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9)
(5) I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)
(6) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for
without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:5)
So in all these characters as the GREAT I AM, we are to LOOK UNTO JESUS, the author and finisher of our
faith, for without Him we can do nothing, for He alone is our life. (Col. 3:4)

Question 4: On page 55 (Let us...), we are urged to look unto Jesus crucified as our divine Substitute. This section
contains many examples of the fruits of Christs substitutionary death on the cross. Please list as many of them as you can find
and write out the portions of the Word of God that are referred to in this paragraph..
Answer 4: We are to LOOK UNTO JESUS CRUCIFIED as our divine Substitute:
(1) to find in His blood our only cleansing from sin before God (I Jn. 1:7)
(2) our only justification before God (Rom. 5:9)

SMO Answer Key for Graders page 21 7/15/15

(3) our only entrance into His holy presence (Heb. 10:19)
(4) our only ransom from sins captivity (Col. 1:1314)
(5) our only deliverance from the wrath to come (Rom. 5:9)
(6) and the only lasting Peace found in the whole universe, because He made peace through the blood of his cross
(Col. 1:20)
(7) We are to BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD, which taketh away the sin of the world (Jn. 1:29), as our Offering,
the One Who was made to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God
in Him (2 Cor. 5:21).

(a) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus
Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (I Jn. 1:7)
(b) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Rom. 5:9)
(c) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,_(Heb. 10:19)
(d) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In
whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:_(Col. 1:13-14)
(e) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (Rom. 5:9)
(f) And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say,
whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. (Col. 1:20)
(g) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of
the world. (Jn. 1:29)
(h) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
(II Cor. 5:21)
(i) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and with out spot:(I Pet. 1:19)
(j) Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of
sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the
law of Moses. (Acts 13:38-39)

Question 5: What blessing are we to look unto Jesus for? Why is this aspect of looking unto Jesus so important? (page 55
Again, we...)
Answer 5: We are to LOOK UNTO JESUS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE as our justification, for Rom. 4:25 tells us
that He was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Yes, we serve a risen
Lord, One Who lives at Gods right hand for us, and is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and
sanctification, and redemption (I Cor. 1:30). He alone is our standing before God; for we who have
believed upon Him to the saving of our never-dying souls have been accept ed in the beloved, in Christ
Himself (Eph. 1:6).

Question 6: How are we to look unto Jesus, as it is described in the two paragraphs beginning on page 55 (Again, we...)?
Write the reference and key point for each of the three portions of Gods Word given here.
Jesus the Lord, the Christ of God, reigns now as King upon His throne and we are to look unto Him as
Lord and King now or we cannot by saved; for it is by His power as King that He delivers us from sin and
its power. We must bow to His sceptre now or we shall know nothing of His Saviorship and redemption.
Please write something about what this means in your life.

Answer 6: We are to LOOK UNTO JESUS GLORIFIED as our RULING KING, highly exalted.
(1) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name
of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)
(2) ...in heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is
named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and God the Father hath put all things under
his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that
filleth all in all (Eph. 1:20-23).
When he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign, till he put all enemies under his
feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death (1 Cor. 15:24-26).

Question 7: What blessing do we see in looking unto Jesus as glorified? Why is this element of Christs work so necessary
to the saints of God? (page 56 Again, we...)
Answer 7: We must LOOK UNTO JESUS GLORIFIED to find in Him our heavenly Advocate appearing in the
presence of God for us (Heb. 9:24), ever living to make intercession for us (Heb. 2:17-18; 4:15-16; 7:24).
We must LOOK UNTO JESUS as our Heavenly Advocate for strength in our weakness, for wisdom in
our stupidity, for grace in our affliction, for peace in our storms, for comfort in our sorrows, for joy in our
depression, for mercy in our failures, for hope in our dark ness, for life in our deadness, and for faith in our
trials.

Question 8: Please explain what are the two benefits of looking unto Jesus. Write the reference and key message of each of
the portions of Holy Scriptures used to describe them. (page 57 We are...)
Answer 8: (1) We are to LOOK UNTO JESUS to keep us in His faith until the end, to keep us from falling.
(2) We are to LOOK UNTO JESUS to take us into the home which He has gone to prepare for us, and to present
us to the Father. In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblamable and
unreproveable in his sight (Col. 1:22)
Behold, I and the children which thou hast given me (Heb. 2:13)
I have kept these in thy name that thou gavest me and I have lost none of them (Jn. 17:12).

Question 9: The five paragraphs beginning on page 57 (We are to...and not to...) contain a rather comprehensive list of
things that we are not to look to instead of Jesus. Write something about the implications which these things have had in your
own life. God helping you, what do you intend to do in the light of these truths?
