I. TOPIC: Natural Gas and Electrical Emergencies


II. Goal/Scope
A. Apprentice firefighter will complete this assignment as a
requirement for their apprenticeship.
III. Learning Objectives
A. Apprentice will create an outline and present a drill on:
1. Natural Gas
2. Propane
3. Electrical utilities
B. Outline will be pre-approved by Training.
C. The outline and drill will cover:
1. Propane vs. Natural gas emergencies involving fires,
structural collapse and medical emergencies. Compare and
contrast the two forms of gas.
2. Electrical emergencies that involve all levels of utility service,
from individual consumers up to manufacturing plants.
3. Motor vehicle crash responses and hybrid cars.
4. Preplanning for electrical and gas emergencies.
5. Shut-off or safety mitigation for each.
IV. Assignment Expectations for Completion
A. Apprentice will complete outline that will identify and describe the
above learning objectives.
B. Apprentice will demonstrate learning objectives through company
drill.
1. Utilize outline for drill presentation.
2. Outline will be pre-approved by training captain before drill
presentation:
3. Drill will be evaluated by assigned crew and officer.
a) Training captain will have option for observation.
V. Suggested Timeline
A. 1st month: Outline finished
B. 2nd month: Outline approved by Fire Training Division
C. 3rd month: Drill presented by apprentice
1. Date of drill will be announced by apprentice to Fire Training
Division.
2. Drill will be observed by Company Officer or Fire Training
Division personnel.
