SWEET ESCAPE
We leave the city and make our way to La Union in these Volvos

surprisingly accessible thanks to the latest additions
to the Tarlac-Pampanga-La Union Expressway
(TPLEX). The farthest exit from Metro Manila is in
the town of Binalonan. The latest extension is so new,

roughly five hours now. From EDSA, just find your way to NLEX, go onto Volvo keeps it

drive through every town along the two-lane blacktop. I do miss doing

I cant even compute how many kilometers Ive covered doing Baguio-
Manila-Baguio trips throughout my years in college and adult life. But I
do know Im a pretty safe driver because of all those logged kilometers.
Ultimately, old MacArthur taught me to only trust myself and the
machine Im drivingand to be wary of pretty much everything else.
That said, the NLEX-SCTEX-TPLEX stretch is not without its own
set of challenges. Its average speeds are faster, so when things go wrong,
the consequences are more serious. But what really bugs me is how
boring the trip can be. For folks like me who arent used to driving on big,
open highways and prefer the stimulation of a tight road, staying awake
can be tough!
When the coffee stops working, pulling over for a nap is my only
option. But you know what? Behind the wheel of the S90 I feel more
relaxed, and not once do I feel the need to stop. Call me crazy, but that
really does say a lot about the car I am driving. Thats the beauty of
Volvosthey really do work with the driver to help ensure a safe
journey. Im no stranger to the brand, and Im fully aware that the
Swedes are super proud of the safest-car-on-the-road reputation, but
I get to fully experience this during my stint behind the wheel to San
Fernando and back.
The S90 we are driving packs a twin-turbocharged diesel engine under

ambience, is top-notch as expected, and there are even three drive modes

tinkering self loose, and gauge the cabin features based on intuitiveness
and ease of operation. The XC90 makes me feel that I can explore its
plethora of technological functions without bleeding through the nose.
Upon settling in the driver seat, you are graciously met with a
dashboard display that speaks of classy minimalist flair. Clean lines
and almost perfect contrasts prove that simplicity can be smart and
beautiful at the same time. Its much like the feeling of walking into a
plush Apple store, with sexy and witty Scandinavian models rather than
geeky sales reps to attend to your every need and concern. My keen eye
immediately observes the small Swedish flags stitched to the sides of the
ergonomically designed leather seatsthey reflect the brands pride in
creating a purely Swedish-made vehicle.
I immediately feel in tune with the XC90. To get things going, I
look for the engine-start button, which turns out to be a nifty nob that
twists like a key in the lower center console. It fires up the efficient yet
