Lesson 7
Graphing Calculators

1
Basics of the Graphing
Calculator
Lightening/Darkening
Sometimes, your calculator screen may appear
blank, but you may not need a new battery. You
may just need to darken your screen.
To darken your screen, press and hold down
the up arrow until the screen is as dark as
you want. (If you let go of the arrow, then you
must repeat this process.)
Use and to lighten the screen.

2
Example 1
It is important to keep the order of operation in
mind when entering arithmetic expressions in the
calculator.

58 49
For example, calculate .
4.5

3
Example 2
Use the caret key, , to express that a value is
being raised to an exponent.

For example, calculate .026.

4
E Notation
Because superscripted exponents like 10 11
cannot always be conveniently displayed, the letter
E is often used to represent times ten raised to the
power of (which would be written as "10b") and is
followed by the value of the exponent.

6.4E 11 = 6.410 11 = .000000000064.

5
Example 3
Rewrite each of the following numbers in standard
notation.

a) 1.24 E 4

b) 8.84 E 8

6
STAT Submenus
Get to know the STAT button
and its submenus, we'll be
using these all quarter.

7
Lists
The graphing calculators use lists to store and
manipulate sets of data. The TI-83 and TI-84
calculators have six default lists, L1 through L6.
(Other lists can be named and created.)

ENTER

8
1-Var Stats
The following is a sample of 19 exam grades.
Enter the data in list L1.
76 74 82 96 66 76 78 72 52 68
86 84 62 76 78 92 82 74 88

Done right, your calculator should look like:

9
1-Var Stats
Choose 1-Var Stats (one-variable statistics) to
analyze data.

OR

10
1-Var Stats
x = sample mean
x = sum of all data
x2 = sum of squares of data
Sx = sample standard deviation
x = population standard
deviation
n = sample size

11
1-Var Stats
minX = minimum data value
Q1 = lower quartile
Med = median
Q3 = upper quartile
maxX = maximum data value

12
Clearing a List
To clear a list, move the cursor over the list, press
CLEAR, then press ENTER.

CLEAR ENTER

1) Highlight the list. 2) Press CLEAR. 3) Press ENTER.

13
Clearing All Lists
To clear all lists at once, press the MEMORY
button and choose ClrAllLists.

1) Press MEMORY. 2) Choose ClrAllLists. 3) Press ENTER.

14
Example 4
Calculate the mean, median, and standard
deviation from the following list of data. Round to
three significant digits, if necessary.

1 1 1 8 12 15 18 18 21 96

15
1-Var Stats with Frequencies
One question in a nutrition study asked the individuals
in the study to give the number of groups included in
their daily meals. The results are given below.
Number of food groups Frequency
2 1
3 3
4 7
5 12
6 8

Enter the Number of food groups in list L1 and the

frequencies in list L2.
16
1-Var Stats with Frequencies
This time, you will need to specify the frequencies.

OR

17
1-Var Stats with Frequencies
x = sample mean
x = sum of all data
x2 = sum of squares of data
Sx = sample standard deviation
x = population standard
deviation
n = sample size

18
1-Var Stats with Frequencies
minX = minimum data value
Q1 = lower quartile
Med = median
Q3 = upper quartile
maxX = maximum data value

19
Example 5
Calculate the mean, median, and standard
deviation from the following frequency table.
Round to three significant digits, if necessary.
