Rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep, REMS) is a unique phase of mammalian
sleep characterized by random movement of the eyes, low muscle tone throughout the
body, and the propensity of the sleeper to dream vividly.

A circadian rhythm is a roughly 24 hour cycle in the physiological processes of living

beings, including plants, animals, fungi and cyanobacteria. In a strict sense, circadian
rhythms are endogenously generated, although they can be modulated by external cues
such as sunlight and temperature.

Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized
by insomnia and excessive sleepiness affecting people whose work hours overlap with
the typical sleep period.
EMG (electromyogram) to record muscle activity such as face twitches, teeth grinding,
and leg movements; it also helps in determining the presence of REM stage sleep

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness.
People with narcolepsy experience excessive daytime sleepiness and intermittent,
uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. These sudden sleep
attacks may occur during any type of activity at any time of the day.

Sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway becomes completely or partially blocked,
interrupting regular breathing for short periods of time -- which then wakes you up.

Nasal airflow sensor machine used to record airflow.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for

obstructive sleep apnea. It includes a small machine that supplies a constant and
steady air pressure, a hose, and a mask or nose piece.

A sleep study or polysomnogram (PSG) is a test that electronically transmits and

records specific physical activities while you sleep

Chronotherapy is a behavioral technique in which the bedtime is gradually and

systematically adjusted until a desired bedtime is achieved

1. In a REM sleep, your eyes move into different directions.

2. Circadian Rhythms are very important in determining the sleeping pattern of an
individual.
3. Most nurses have shift work sleep disorder due to working different shifts.
4. During an EMG test, a strip is attached to the muscles to determine twitches
during a span of time.
5. He might have narcolepsy, if he is observed to be dozing on and off.
6. Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that is observed during sleep.
7. Nasal airflow sensor is attached, to record airflow during sleep.
8. CPAP machine is commonly used by individuals who are suffering from
obstructive sleep apnea.
9. Sleep study is used to determine obstructive sleep apnea.
10. Chronotheraphy is used to use to reset the circadian rhythm.
