Comparative and
superlative adjectives
There are two types of
adjectives that we use when
comparing two or more nouns:
comparative adjectives and
superlative adjectives.
Comparative adjectives
We use them when we are describing two (or more)
nouns and comparing them.
Rules
1. For adjectives with one syllable,
add er to the adjective:

Old Older
Fast Faster
Small Smaller
1.1 For one syllable adjectives with
consonant-vowel-consonant, we
double the last letter:

Big Bigger
Fat Fatter
Hot Hotter
2. For adjectives with two syllables
and ending in y, change the y to i
and add er.

Pretty Prettier
Funny Funnier
2.1 Adjectives with two syllables, ending in er

clever cleverer

2.2 Adjectives with two syllables, ending in le

Superlative Adjectives
Superlative adjectives are used to describe an
object which is at the upper or lower limit of a
quality. They are used in sentences where a
subject is compared to a group of objects.
1. For adjectives with one syllable add
est to the adjective.

2. For adjectives with two syllables and
ending y, change y to I and add est.

3. For most adjectives with two
or more syllables add most.
