Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

To enroll in a bachelors program at UNLV, I have to pass the Praxis Core Exam.

This is to ensure that I have a basic knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics

before I start the educational courses needed to complete my degree. I plan on enrolling

for a Bachelors Secondary Education in Mathematics. To pass the Praxis Core, I will

need to have passed all three sections. Passing scores are 150 in mathematics, 156 in

reading, and 162 in writing.

Exam Preparation

I did not do much in preparation for the practice exams. I did some math warm

ups with Khan Academy. I think that helped me with the simple mathematical

manipulations. I was worried about the timing, so I did a few of the mathematics practice

test with a timer. I know that reading and writing are, by far, not my strong suits. I took

the most of my preparation time to try and improve those skills. I went through the

different methods used when answering questions and tried to find the ones that work

best for me. I did purchase some practice tests for reading and writing. I worked on a few

of them untimed, and there were two that I timed myself.

Exam Results

My results from the practice test are as follow: reading 50%, writing 68%, and

math 85%. Unfortunately, the writing score is based on the multiple-choice test questions

only. The score is based on the likelihood of passing the test. I am likely to pass the math
portion of the Praxis Core Exam, less likely to pass the writing, and would most likely

fail the reading portion of the Exam.

Future Exam Preparation

Thankfully, since I took the practice test before the actual test, I have found out

that I need to focus more than half of my attention on reading comprehension, some on

my writing skills and a review for mathematics. I will purchase a workbook that will help

me with the three different sections of the Praxis Core Exam. I will spend at least nine

hours a week studying for the test. I think that I will also postpone taking the test until I

feel more comfortable. My hope is to pass the official test on the first try.
