School Year/ : 2016-2017

Editor/Initiator: Ms. Angeliki Karavas, English Teacher

OUR E-MAGAZINE

Welcome to Fall Issue of Our School E-Magazine, courtesy of The English

Language Class for the School Year 2016-2017!
It started as an English Class project for 3rd Year Junior High School
students, during the 2013-2014 School Year. Now, being our fourth year of
writing, it has developed into something more - a written legacy that 3rd
Year Students pass on to those who study at Paros Junior High School and
to all those who will find an interest in checking it out. But something new
has happened this year. B' Class students participated for the first time,
showing actual zeal on the job. Of course, they will continue to write, create
and edit next year- thats what they say.
We created the issue in a simple design- nothing professional about its
creation- just each students own touch and character. Forgive our
grammatical, syntactical or orthographical errors. As Editor, I decided not
to tamper and interfere so much with my students/writers work unless it
was necessary.
Lots of encouragement and support went into each topic when students
didnt know what to do. There was also some aid in finding a topic for some
students or downloading pictures for their work.
I personally want to thank my colleagues, Ms. Kokkinou, for her help on
the computers and Ms. Markantoni, for her guidance, and of course the
students who got involved in the process in any way, like my Co-Editors, the
Photo Editors, and article helpers, too!

Hope you enjoy each page!! A. K.

Letter from the Staff

Welcome to this years School Magazine. We are very happy to have
participated in the creation of the 2016-2017 E-magazine. It was a
challenge for us since some of us had never got involved in writing articles
or even creating/making a magazine for a school. We would like to take
this opportunity to introduce ourselves and thank everyone who helped us.

Chief Editor, Printed and Digital Updating: Ms. Angeliki Karavas, English
Teacher

FRIENDSHIP
By Arsinoy Skarlatou C4
Friendship is a single dwelling in two bodies. Aristotle said.

Nowadays technology has evolved so much that people have replaced friendship
with technology but I think it is very important to have friends.
In the first place, friends can give us the courage to pursue our goals. For
example, it will help us to have confidence and self esteem. Consequently, you
will feel stronger and encouraged.
Secondly, if you have developed friendly relations with someone, you reduce the
risk of suffering from loneliness. In this way, you will have the feeling that you
belong to a group. As a result, you will have people to share your experiences
with them.
On the other hand, it is difficult to find a good friend because some of them may
encourage reckless behavior. In particular a bad friend can affect you to do bad
things. Therefore, you will get entangled without realizing.
All in all, it is difficult to have a good friend but in my opinion it is necessary to
have a powerful bond with someone.

JAPAN

Written by Kleoniki Ntokou B4 & Flora Vioni B1

Japan (Japanese: , officially: ) is a country in East Asia. Called by the
inhabitants of Nihon (Nihon) or Nippos (Nippon) and the name is a combination of
two ideograms, meaning sun and top respectively. It is also known as the Land of the
Rising Sun. It extends to a large part of the Japanese Archipelago, in the northwest
Pacific Ocean and along the coasts of Russia and Korea, from which it is separated
from the Sea of Japan.
It consists of four major
islands, Hokkaido,
Shikoku, Kyushu and
Honshu, which are also
accompanied by
thousands of smaller
(actually the Japanese
archipelago comprises
of 6852 islands). Most
of them are
mountainous and
volcanic; for example the highest peak of Japan's Mount Fuji, is a volcano. It has a
population of 126 820 000 inhabitants, according to official estimates of 2016 and a
total area of 377 972 square kilometers. The largest city in Japan and de facto capital
is Tokyo, which together with its metropolitan area has more than 30 million
inhabitants. It is the largest metropolitan area in the world.

GEOGRAPHY
Japan is an island country, with the main islands Honshu, the Hokkaido, the Kyushu
and Shikoku, which can be added about 3,000 smaller islands. Is mountainous and
volcanic chain of islands, with numerous of volcanoes, 192 in number. Located in the
volcanic zone of the Pacific Ocean (also known as the "Ring of Fire"), at the junction
of three tectonic plates, which is responsible for the frequent earthquakes that occur
in the region. The terrain is mainly mountainous, with two major mountain ranges. In

one of them stands out the Japanese Alps mountain range that separates the middle
the Honshu Island and extends to the Fuji volcano. The Japanese rivers generally
have a short length with only six of them exceeding 200 km. It is also characterized
by several lakes, many of which are formed in the crater of the volcano.

Area: 377 972 sq. Km.

Main islands: Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku
Coastline: 29.751 km.
Highest peak: Mount Fuji, 3,776 meters.
Capital: Tokyo
Arithmetic density: 2824 per. per sq. km

MUSIC
Japanese music is eclectic and diverse.
Many instruments, such as the koto, were
introduced in the 9th and 10th centuries.
The accompanied recitative of
the Noh drama dates from the 14th century
and the popular folk music, with the guitar-
like shamisen, from the sixteenth. Western
classical music, introduced in the late 19th
century, now forms an integral part of
Japanese culture. The imperial court
ensemble Gagaku has influenced the work
of some modern Western composers.

Notable classical composers from Japan include Toru Takemitsu and Rentar Taki.
Popular music in post-war Japan has been heavily influenced by American and
European trends, which has led to the evolution of J-pop, or Japanese popular
music. Karaoke is the most widely practiced cultural activity in Japan. A 1993 survey
by the Cultural Affairs Agency found that more Japanese had sung karaoke that year
than had participated in traditional pursuits such as flower arranging (ikebana) or tea
ceremonies.

with a soup and okazudishes
made from fish, vegetable, tofu and
the liketo add flavor to the staple
food. In the early modern era
ingredients such as red meats that
had previously not been widely used
in Japan were introduced.

. The Michelin Guide has awarded restaurants in Japan more Michelin stars than the
rest of the world combined.

GEISHA
Geisha (Japan. ) is called in Japan, an educated woman who has attended
special studies, wears a kimono with striking colors and designs and combed with the

"People and cats:

What a relationship!"
Written by Filio Biza C3

The cat is an animal belonging to the feline family. It is the most popular pet.
It has lived in the human environment for at least 9500 years. The cat chases
over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands.

The cat does not offer services. The cat offers itself. Of course it requires care
and protection. Nowadays its hard to find those who truly love cats. All you
philofelines, remember that many cats that meow around you lay all their
hopes and all their trust on you! If you ever show your love to a cat it will show
it back. If you give her false love and after a while you throw it out ... it will
never forgive you! Because it will be hurt by you!

I will not continue to analyze the term "cat"! I think it would be very boring! I
thought, therefore, to talk about my own cats. I think it will not be bad, after
all, according to ones loves they will understand what we are.

We at home have always loved cats. But we never happened to have cats,
because we thought that because we had a dog, they could not be together.

They all started one day when a stray cat appeared in our house. We loved it,
started to feed it and take care of it. After a few months we realized it was
pregnant. Suddenly our cats multiplied. And they multiplied with the passage
of time, until we neutered/sterilized all our cats and they no longer multiplied.

In this way we discovered our love for cats. Despite sterilization, cats
continued to come. Stray cats, deformed cats, small cats, large ones, strange
ones even baby cats-kittens! Luckily, all our cats play with each other. They
have a program, they now obey us and know our every move. With these
animals, we now have a close relationship, and we give them our love and they
show their love to us! A cat, for me, is one of the best pets you can have!

ENGLISH LITERATURE
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

By Kostas Loukis C2

Shakespeares life
When William Shakespeare died in his birthplace
of Stratford-upon- Avon, he was recognized as one of the greatest English
playwrights of his area. In the four centuries since, he has come to be seen as not
only a great English playwright, but the greatest playwright in the English language.
Reflecting upon the achievement of his peer and sometimes rival, Ben Jonson wrote
of Shakespeare, He was not of an age, but for all time.

Born to John Shakespeare, a glove maker and tradesman, and Mary Arden, the
daughter of an affluent farmer. William Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564,
in Stratford-upon-Avon. At that time, infants were baptized three days after their birth,
thus scholars believe that Shakespeare was born on April 23, the same day on which
he died at age 52. As the third of eight children, young William grew up in this small
town 100 miles northwest of London, far from the cultural and courtly center of
England.

Shakespeare attended the local grammar school, King's New School, where the
curriculum would have stressed a classical education of Greek mythology, Roman
comedy, ancient history, rhetoric, grammar, Latin, and possibly Greek.

Throughout his childhood, Shakespeare's father struggled with serious financial debt.
Therefore, unlike his fellow playwright Christopher Marlowe, he did not attend
university. Rather, in 1582 at age 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a woman eight
years his senior and three months pregnant.

Their first child, Susanna, was born in 1583, and twins, Hamnet and Judith, came in
1585. In the seven years following their birth, the historical record concerning
Shakespeare is incomplete, contradictory, and unreliable; scholars refer to this period
as his lost years.

17
OUR E-MAGAZINE

In a 1592 pamphlet by Robert Greene, Shakespeare reappears as an upstart

crow flapping his poetic wings in London. Evidently, it did not take him long to land
on the stage. Between 1590 and 1592, Shakespeare's Henry VI series, Richard III,
and The Comedy of Errors were performed. When the theaters were closed in 1593
because of the plague, the playwright wrote two narrative poems, Venus and Adonis
and The Rape of Lucrece, and probably began writing his richly textured sonnets.
One hundred and fifty-four of his sonnets have survived, ensuring his reputation as a
gifted poet. By 1594, he had also written, The Taming of the Shrew, The Two
Gentlemen of Verona and Love's Labor's Lost.

Having established himself as an actor and playwright, in 1594 Shakespeare became

a shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain's Men, one of the most popular acting
companies in London. He remained a member of this company for the rest of his
career, often playing before the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare entered one
of his most prolific periods around 1595, writing Richard II, Romeo and Juliet, A
Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Merchant of Venice. With his newfound
success, Shakespeare purchased the second largest home in Stratford in 1597,
though he continued to live in London. Two years later, he joined others from the
Lord Chamberlain's Men in establishing the polygonal Globe Theatre on the outskirts
of London. When King James came to the throne in 1603, he issued a royal license
to Shakespeare and his fellow players, organizing them as the King's Men.

During King James's reign, Shakespeare wrote many of his most accomplished plays
about courtly power, including King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra. In
1609 or 1611, Shakespeare's sonnets were published, though he did not live to see
the First Folio of his plays published in 1623.

In 1616, with his health declining, Shakespeare revised his will. Since his only son
Hamnet had died in 1596, Shakespeare left the bulk of his estate to his two
daughters, with monetary gifts set aside for his sister, theater partners, friends, and
the poor of Stratford. A fascinating detail of his will is that he bequeathed the family's

18
OUR E-MAGAZINE

second best bed to his wife Anne. He died one month later, on April 23, 1616. To
the world, he left a lasting legacy in the form of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and two
narrative poems.

Shakespeare's Works
Shakespeare wrote at least 38 plays and over 150 short and long poems, many of
which are considered to be the finest ever written in English. His works have been
translated into every major living language, and some others besides (the Folger's
holdings include translations in Esperanto and Klingon), and nearly 400 years after
his death, they continue to be performed around the world.

K-POP ()
Written by Natalia Fragouli C 4

Some information
K-pop is a musical genre originating in South Korea that is characterized by a
wide variety of audiovisual elements. Although it comprises all genres of
"popular music" within South Korea, the term is more often used in a narrower
sense to describe a modern form of South Korean pop music covering a
range of styles including dance-pop, pop ballad, electropop, R&B and hip-hop
music.

Popularity in Europe
Korean pop music, Kpop, may not be known by the mainstream in Europe yet,
but when looking closer, the market is there and fans are updated daily with
information about their favourite stars thanks to the Internet and its many
communities online.

Why is K-pop different and unique

K-pop is also well known for its unique, extravagant, and eye-popping
personalities. K Pop stars, or idols as they are usually known in Asia, have a
knack for truly standing out from the crowd and taking self-expression to a
new level.
Unlike young western pop stars who often grow famous in a short period of
time, K-pop artists are usually groomed and mentored by managers or agents
for years at a time before recording their first song. Intensive training, never
less than a year, make these young artists seasoned performers by the time

Forca Chapecoense
Written by George Mytilineos C3

The fairytale story of the Brazilian team Chapecoense, which from a

small football team became a symbol for its country, was interrupted
when the aircraft company LaMia Rionegkro crashed in Colombia,
spreading death to 22 team players.

The tragedy has plunged Brazil into

mourning, 71 dead have been
recovered from the 77 on board, while
local authorities speak of a "miracle"
mentioning six survivors.

Initially, those who managed to survive the crash

were seven, but a few hours later, the player Marcos Danilo passed away,

while he was being taken to hospital in the area.

The authorities of Jose Maria Cordova airport of Medellin reported the

aircraft had transmitted a distress signal for damage to the electrical

systems, as received by the airport control tower. However, many

rumours have been going round. Sources speak of bad weather conditions

that led to the tragic accident, while other media reported that the

aircraft ran out of fuel.

"It was not just a group of people who

respected each other as professionals.

It was a family, a group of friends.

Everyone laughed very loudly, even in

defeat. There was a great atmosphere,

great pleasure," devastated the

president of the Brazilian team Chapecoense reported.

"Yesterday morning when I said goodbye to them they said they were
going to make their dreams reality. We shared the same dream with all
our senses. And in the early hours, that dream ended, "he said.

After the roll call of the team members, there were many fans of
Chapecoense that rushed to the pitch, with pictures of friends and
members, embracing each other and they not being able to hold their
tears.

the club, Boca Juniors is mostly known for its professional football team
which, since it was promoted in 1913, has always played in the Argentine
Primera Divisin, becoming the most successful team of Argentina in number
of official titles, with 65 won to date. National titles won by Boca Juniors
include 31 Primera Divisin championships, and 12 domestic cups. Boca
Juniors also owns an honorary title awarded by the Argentine Football
Association for their successful tour of Europe in 1925.

During successive years, Boca consolidated as one of the most popular

teams of Argentina, with a huge number of fans not only in Argentina but
worldwide. The club is one of the most successful teams in Argentine football,
having won 31 Primera Divisin titles, second only to River Plate with 36. In
South American and international club football, Boca Juniors have won 18
titles, the same as A.C. Milan; Boca also won four international official titles
(played between teams from the Argentine and Uruguayan Association),
although not recognized by FIFA yet.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Presented by Stamatis Tsakonis B5

The Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as

the Cavs, are an American professional
basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The
Cavs compete in the National Basketball
Association (NBA) as a member of the
league's Eastern Conference Central Division.
The team began play in 1970. Since 1994, the team has played its home games at Quicken
Loans Arena, which is shared with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League and
the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League.
Many past and present top NBA players, including LeBron James, Mark Price, Brad
Daugherty, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, have spent most or all of their careers playing for the
Cavaliers. The franchise has won five Central Division championships (1976, 2009, 2010,
2015, and 2016), three Eastern Conference championships (2007, 2015, 2016), one NBA
championship (2016), and have reached the playoffs 20 times in their 46-year history.

The 2016 NBA Finals victory over the Golden State Warriors marked the first time
in Finals history a team had come back to win the series after trailing three games to one. The
Cavaliers, however, also have a number of dubious distinctions, such as former owner Ted
Stepien's tenure, which led the NBA to create a rule regulating the trading of draft picks,
known as the "Stepien rule", and a 26-game losing streak in 201011, which, at the time, tied
the record for the longest losing streak in major American professional sports.

A Christmas trip around the

OUR E-MAGAZINE

WRITTEN BY MARIA ELENI ROUSSOU B4,

MARIA ELENI PATSAROU B4 & CHRYSALLIS SKARAMAGA B5

Christmas is one of the largest and most glamorous

holiday times! Adored by children and adults! At
Christmas we celebrate the birth of Christ, in Greece,
but not in all countries of the world! So we will show
you how Christmas is celebrated in several countries of
the world.

Christmas in Italy:
Christmas in one of the most beautiful holiday
destination in the world, celebrates Christmas in its own
way! Starting from December 8 and ending on January
6. During this period, all the houses are decorated with
Poinsettia and Christmas trees. The Alexandrians are
plants in colorful pots. Under the tree they put a great
manger in which they place all the characters on
December 8 and the newborn baby "comes in" on
December 24 at midnight, the hour He was born!! A
very important date for Italians is January 6th the
famous, poor, old, and good witch "Befana" flies with a
big broom over Italy and brings gifts to children by
placing them into the Christmas stockings in homes. For
good children he leaves candies and toys and for
naughty ones charcoal.

39
OUR E-MAGAZINE

A traditional Christmas sweet is the panettone, a

delicious cake with raisins and tiramisu. Also on
Christmas day, after lunch, the children of the family say
little rhymes and get cash rewards!

40
OUR E-MAGAZINE

Christmas in Sweden:
Christmas in Sweden is quite than ours or what we can
imagine! It begins on December 13 and ends on
January 13. This is because Cnut the Great, king before
about 1000 years, decided Christmas would be
celebrated for 20 days instead of 12 !! It begins on the
St. Lucia day. On the morning of 13 December the
eldest daughters of all the families are dressed in
white, they put on their heads a green wreath and so
they go to school, pretending to be St. Lucia. She is the
beautiful young woman dressed in white with a crown
and lit candles. Each girl wakes up her parents and
offers them while singing, cookies, coffee and glogg
(mulled wine with spices). As for
the tree, it is a custom from
Germany, adopted by the Swedes
around 1700!
On Christmas Eve every home have
a similar meal. They eat
ham, jellied pigs feet, lutfisk (sun-
dried cod served with a creamy
sauce) and rice porridge. After they
have eaten they all gather around
the tree and open the gifts left by
Christmas Elves that live in the attic

Christmas in Holland:
Christmas in Holland starts off with a tradition that has
nothing to do with Christmas! According to the legend
St. Nick, like out St. Basilis, arrives in November in
Holland with his ships, three weeks before his
nameday. With him comes Black Pete. On December 5
St. Nick with Black Pete leave presents in wooden
shoes. Black Pete leaves for naughty kids a bag full of
coal. Once St. Nick leaves they decorate Christmas
trees and poinsettas. One more custom the Dutch have
is eating chocolates and Kruidnoten (traditional
cookies with ginger ).

Christmas in Argentina:
Christmas in Argentina is celebrated in December, one
of the hottest months of the year. Preparations are
made early due to the weather. They decorate houses
with lights, flowers in green, gold, red and white. They
also decorate their houses with red and white
garlands. Trees are decorated with ribbons,
balls candles, lights and presents. At the
bottom of the trees they put cotton
balls to give them a false sensation of
snow. On Christmas day families
gather after mass and dine on roast turkey, roast beef,
stuffed tomatoes, pies and pudding. They also have
fireworks at midnight and small children light up paper
balloons (globos) that fly up in the sky. On Christmas
Eve they play board games, dance and talk. During the
night they await Santa Claus.

Christmas is called La Posada. This is a
religious procession << reenacts >>,

Written by Cleo Samaltani C4

The British wizard and magizoologist

Newt Scamander, now becomes the
hero of the new movie, a spin-off of
the Harry Potter film series, (produced
and written by J. K. Rowling, in her
screenwriting debut, and inspired by
her book of the same name), and
which will be completed in five films. In
the first of these- New York 1926- is
upset by the presence of a dark force
that threatens to reveal the secret
society of the Magi to ordinary
mortals. (Did the powerful evil wizard Grindelwald have a role in all
this?) The young Newton arrives in town with a suitcase full of
magical creatures, some of which are released and accentuates
the ever more intense chaos. So good and bad Magicians,
innocent Muggles (non-magical people) and strange beings
entangled in an adventure that reproduce all the harrypotter
spectacle recipe, romance, emotion and suspense, with
background nostalgic, jazz New York thirties. A plot that has it all:
tested narrative tricks, lovable characters and simple, but
successful overthrows, with direct or indirect socio-political
references: from tolerance to diversity, to contemporary "war on
terror", to Nazi (and neo-Nazi) threat.

INTERVIEW WITH A PROFESSOR

Written by Anastasia Skiada, Fotini Tsantani & Eleana Tsifla C4

Interviewee Teacher: Mr. Ioannis Drosos

STUDENT: Where do you come from?

TEACHER: My father is from Lefkes, Paros. I was born in Athens, grew up

there, went to school there and came back 22 years ago in 1995.

STUDENT: Did you yourself choose to teach on the island of Paros and if so,
why? Would you prefer to work somewhere else?

TEACHER: Well, I was working in a school in Athens but I chose to be

transferred to Paros.

STUDENT: Before your marriage or afterwards?

TEACHER: Simultaneously.

STUDENT: Were you married here or in Athens?

TEACHER: I got married in Athens, only to come and live in Paros. It was a
life decision, even though I was already appointed in a State school.

STUDENT: How many years have you been teaching?

TEACHER: Since 1989.

STUDENT: How did you choose your profession?

TEACHER: Because I liked being involved with children.

STUDENT: Do you believe that children should choose by themselves their

profession or should there be some influence from others?

60
OUR E-MAGAZINE

TEACHER: Clearly, his/her choice is based on his/her decision. Of course

he has been influenced, in some way or other. This might have happened
days before, or much longer than that. Nobody woke up and said Im going
to be an aviator. Certainly, he has been influenced but the final decision is
his/her. And it should be his/her own decision.

STUDENT: Is it what you dreamed it would be?

TEACHER: I cant say that it was what I dreamed. I know lots of people who
that dreamed of becoming a teacher. It came to me at some point.

STUDENT: Do you believe that students should choose their studies on the
basis of their interests and inclinations or the financial conditions and the
correspondence to the labor market?

TEACHER: Well, they should choose on the basis of their interests and
inclinations. There are professionals who are successful in a job that might
not make a profit. So, if you like the job and it really suits you, not thinking
that it is a popular profession, you shall succeed.

STUDENT: Do you believe that the school curriculum followed at High

School is useful for our future?

TEACHER: The High School curriculum and programme are useful, because
High School is general knowledge. Its not specialized like the Senior High
School or the Technical Lyceum. So kids here acquire general knowledge
irrelevant to what vocation they will follow.

STUDENT: Do you believe your lesson is useful?

TEACHER: My lesson is diverse, as you well know. There is application. Its

purpose is to endow the future citizen with technological knowledge.
Those who cant understand will be technologically maimed, not knowing
from how to use a cell phone to a cooker to a car.

STUDENT: What is your opinion on the four-month term? Do you think it is

better or worse than the three-month term we used to have? And why?

TEACHER: I believe that it is better this way because there is no pressure,

whereas in the first (3-month) term we had to hand in our grades, write
exams by the end of November, grades that sometimes were wrong-a 18 or
19 may have disappointed the student. I believe the 4-month term is much
better because we have more time.

STUDENT: What is your opinion of this years Third Grade students and
what are your requirements?

61
OUR E-MAGAZINE

TEACHER: This year I dont teach Third Grade. I did have First Grade and
Second Grade. I think that you are a mediocre class, with students who are
neither great nor bad. We have had worse classes but we have also had
advanced ones. We talk about the average state, since there are very bright
students. As for behavior, you are doing fine!

STUDENT: Which cases of students do you find difficulty in cooperating

with?

TEACHER: There are always students that are somehow wayward. Mainly
kids that do not know what their duties are and dont know where their
freedom finishes in school.

STUDENT: How do you approach students? Do you want to be liked or

feared?

TEACHER: I walk on a tight rope between being liked and not being liked.
Not exactly being feared. I dont want students to be afraid of me. I want
them to understand my point of view; I am always in negotiation with them
as to what is correct for the school. I want to persuade them not scare them.
When I decide to do something which I consider correct, I prefer not to be
liked.

STUDENT: Which are the advantages and disadvantages of this profession?

TEACHER: One advantage is that being surrounded by kids keeps you

young. You have lots of interests. A disadvantage is the salary- not so good.
And the condition of the building as well as the whole work environment is
bad. It isnt the kind of workplace a banker has.

STUDENT: What kind of people do you have trouble working with?

TEACHER: What do you mean by kind of people? With moody and grumpy
people, well, no one wants to work with. I find it difficult to work with a
strange, nosy or selfish or superficial person. I also cant get along with a
pleasant person-strange as it might seem.

STUDENT: What is it like to work under pressure?

TEACHER: When I work under pressure, I try to keep the pressure inside
me. I try not to channel it towards others. Its really difficult to work under
pressure.

STUDENT: Can you tell me a suggestion you made in your workplace and
was applied?

TEACHER: Surely. In our Technology lesson we have three units in the First
Grade. In the old days, students would study one unit each year. With other

62
OUR E-MAGAZINE

teachers we put a suggestion to the Ministry and was accepted- each

student produces one project for every school year. In 1997 I proposed this
idea in our convention.

STUDENT: How does a professor climb the pyramid and become a Principal,
and what are the criteria?

TEACHER: There are different laws that dictate the way someone becomes
a principal. An older law stated that you had to have some standard points-
your studies, qualifications in work experience, and knowledge of foreign
languages, ITC etc. plus an interview. The latest law with which I became
Principal counted the standard points plus the poll/evaluation from the
school staff. Thats how I became Principal.

STUDENT: Would you say that you are happy with the job you have chosen?

TEACHER: I am really pleased with my choice. Since I am a mechanical

engineer I have the opportunity to work outside education-and I did- but
education had a better hold on me.

STUDENT: Thank you very much for your time. Is there anything else you
would like to add?

TEACHER: No, thank you. Your effort is worth appraisal.

STUDENT: Thank you very much!
