AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
SPEC SCRIPT & THE SPEC MARKET
So, what is a spec? If youve ever perused the pages of our annual Hit List, which
ranks the best specs of the year, youve seen the definition we like to use for the term
spec...
Made, built, or done with hopes of, but no assurance of payment or sale.
This term is one that defines not only what the spec script is, but also the passion,
drive and perseverance a writer must command to set out and tell their story. While
it is often seen as the loneliest endeavor in this industry, it is also one of the most
creative, rewarding, and fulfilling things a writer will ever do. The spec script is one
of the few places left where a writers thoughts, ideas, stories and characters can all
make the leap from their imagination onto the empty pages in front of them, and in
doing so... make their dreams come true.

Our spec year is tracked from December 1st to November 30th, thereforewithin this
book you will find information on all the specs that hit the market from December 1st,
2013 to November 30th, 2014. That means we did not include specs that came out in
previous years and were set up during 2014 (though some of that information can be
found here). This book is strictly dedicated to the specs that hit the market in 2014.
The information in this book is ONLY about spec scripts. We did not include pitches
or general sales that have occurred. So remember, just because an Agency or
Management company may not have sold a spec, does not mean that they didnt
have a great 2014 in other areas of the industry.
We think that the information provided is fun, interesting, and informative. We hope
that you feel the same way!

TRENDS AND COMPARISONS 02
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014 13
Set Up Numbers
Prior to 2014, the number of specs set up from within their individual years (out
and set up in the same year) and the number of total specs set up in a year
(total number or specs set up to include specs out from previous years) had
increased every single year since 2010. This trend ended in 2014, which saw
only 100 specs set up from within the year and 112 total set up, the lowest such
numbers since 2010 (67 for both statistics). This decline likely reveals 2013s
highs to be an outlier, not indicative of an exponential upward trend as might
have been expected last year. This would suggest similar numbers to come out
of 2015.
Set Up Averages
Once again, the comparisons of 2014 to 2010 hold up, with 2014 garnering
the lowest set up average since 2010s 17.7%, with its average of 27.4%. 2010
appears to be an outlier in this calculation, as the intervening years have all
posted averages in the low-to-mid 30 percent, showing 2014 to be a low year,
but certainly not historically low.
www.tracking-board.com
14 HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014
For Managers, the numbers dipped slightly from 2010 (286 Management
repped specs) to 2011 (284), but steadily increased since through 2012 (304)
and 2013 (356). 2014 saw a second-best ever 312 specs out with managers.
The relative strength of 2014s manager numbers in relation to its other
near-historic lows could indicate an upward trend for managers as opposed
to agents.
Representation by Numbers
Weve also tracked the averages year over year of those specs with
Agents and Managers. Every single year specs out with Managers have
far outweighed those out with Agents - 2011 being the year they came
the closest, with Agencies (70.5% of all specs out) a close competitor to
Management (78.2%). 2014 saw a new high for Management, with 84.6%, while
Agencies came in around average, with 65%.
www.tracking-board.com
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014 15
Genres
Over the past five years we have tracked every genre associated with every spec
that has hit the market, but with a keen eye on the everlasting top 10 genres.
2014 saw five-year lows for many popular genres (122 Thriller, 83 Action, 88
Comedy specs out). On the other hand, Drama saw a five-year high with 93
specs out. But more than anything, it was interesting to track the rise and fall in
both those hitting the market, and those being set up.
A ction. Action was the genre that most obviously declined in 2014. Its steady
rise from 2010 to 2013 was curbed by a precipitous drop in specs out (83
from 138) and specs set up (25 from 46) in comparison to 2013. Despite this
decline, Action is still second only to Thrillers in five-year averages, with an
average of 91.4 out each year, and 37.8 set up.
A dventure. 2010 and 2011 were strong for Adventure specs, while recent
years have not been so kind. Down to only 24 specs out in 2014 from its
peak of 42 in 2010 and 2011, Adventure saw only 4 specs set up this year, a five-
year low, although only down slightly from 2013 (6).
C omedy. One of the most consistent trends over the last five years has been
the slow decline of comedies. From its peaks of 160 specs out in 2010 and 37
set up in 2011, only 88 Comedy specs went out in 2014, with 15 finding homes.
The annual average percentage Comedies set up fell below that of Dramas for
the first time in 2014, declining to 27.4%. Speaking of Dramas
D rama. Drama saw the only increase in specs out from 2013 to 2014, rising
to a five-year record of 93, putting it into second place behind Thrillers. This
popularity has not yet translated into inflated set up numbers, with only 23
Dramas finding homes in 2014, a marked drop from 2013s 34. Still, Drama has
solidified its new place as 3rd overall in projects set up, passing Comedy, while
still trailing Action and Thriller.
F antasy. Every year since 2010 has seen either 11 or 12 fantasy specs go out,
and 2014 is no exception with 12. The big exception this year, is the number
of Fantasy specs set up. The previous high of 2 in 2012 was shattered this year,
as 50% of all Fantasy specs were set up, for a total of 6. Could this reinvigoration
be due to the influence of HBOs wildly popular Game of Thrones? This is
certainly a genre to watch for 2015, in order to see whether 2014 will be a fluke,
or indicative of a return to big budget Fantasy specs.
H orror. Aside from a drop in specs out in 2011, Horror has been one of the
more consistent genres. The slight decline from 2013 (42 to 33), simply
returns Horror to something closer to its annual average after the historic spec
year that was 2013 across the board.
www.tracking-board.com
16 HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014
R omantic Comedy. Rom-Coms have had a rough go of things over the years,
with both the number of specs out and specs set up plummeting in 2013.
This year has mostly kept pace, with the same number of specs set up (2) and
only two fewer specs out (9 vs. 11). There is a market for the Rom-Com, but its
rarely one for the spec script, as studios and producers have instead moved to
snatching up book rights and attaching stars before hiring writers.
S cience Fiction. While keeping close to 2013s five-year highs in number of Sci-
Fi specs out (62 in 2014 to 65 in 2013). However, the set-up numbers were
low for 2014, with only 14 specs set up, the lowest since 2010. The maintenance
of the number of specs out combined with the lower numbers set-up mean that
Sci-Fis set-up percentage has drastically declined from 2013.
T hriller. Thrillers are king, dominating all metrics across the board, as they
have almost every year, Thrillers did have a slight decline from 2013 in
overall numbers (as almost all spec numbers have), putting them more in
line with 2010s still-dominant numbers. With modest budgets and high box
office returns becoming the norm for this genre, there does not seem to be an
expected drop-off in numbers coming for this genre anytime soon.
www.tracking-board.com
HIGHLIGHTS OF 2014 17
Biggest Growth Specs Out ICM (+12) and 3 Arts Entertainment (+11)
earned the largest growth overall in specs out from 2013 to 2014. For ICM,
this just represents the natural fluctuation of their usual high numbers,
but for 3 Arts, 2014 represents an exponential leap from their past
performance.
Agencies to Watch Look for the market to stabilize in 2015, bringing things
back up towards the center, thus giving many Agencies increased numbers.
Look for Paradigm and Verve to continue climbing towards the ranks of the
traditional major players, but expect UTA and WME to continue to dominate.

GENRES of 2014
While genre is central to every film production, In this chapter we analyze ten of the top genres
it is perhaps nowhere more important than on the market: Action, Adventure, Comedy,
on the spec market. Spec scripts live and die Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Romantic Comedies,
on the ups and downs of the market cultural Sci-Fi, Supernatural and Thriller. We identify
trends, budgetary conditions, recent box office; the most prominent genre out, the most
all of these factors will determine what a Studio prominent genre set up and what Agency and/
wants to pick up and therefore, what Agents or Management Company worked the best
and Managers will want to put out to best with each respective genre. This information
represent their clients. will give you a picture of which genres are
trending and where.
2014 was another year of big-budget Fantasy
and Action sequels at the box office, but
what does that mean for specs? Are we tired
of superheroes yet, or will they continue to
dominate? Does the next original R-Rated
Comedy have a shot at making it big? With hits
as varied as The Lego Movie and Ouija, what
big name toy brand will hit the screen next?
www.tracking-board.com
GENRES 40
GENRES of 2014
1 Genre vs. 2 Genres vs. 3 Genres
33 specs hit the market with 3 genres affixed to them of those 33 specs, 7 were set
up, making a 21.2% set up rate.
158 specs hit the market with 2 genres listed of those 158, 40 were set up, making
a 25.3% set up rate.
178 specs hit the market with just 1 genre listed of those 178, 54 were set up,
making a 30.3% set up rate.
Conclusion For 2014, the fewer genres, the better. The market was looking for clarity this year
having only one genre listed was an advantage.

REPRESENTATION 05
55 REPRESENTATION
Over the next two sections of this book we will highlight the top 26 Agencies and Management
Companies of 2014. While we tracked 109 individual companies this year, these 26 companies
represent those that successfully set up 2 or more specs scripts in 2014.
Throughout the following sections each Agency and Management Company page will include:
A break down of all of the specs these companies went out with and set up
(highlighted in BLUE) in 2014.
A look at the companys Top Genre, Top Partner and Best Month.
A break down of the number of writers the company has had on The
Hit List (The Best Specs of the Year) since 2010, and The Young & Hungry
List (Top 100 Writers on the Verge) since 2011.
The list of individual representatives (and their specs out and set up
ratios) who hit the market with specs in 2014.
A break down of each individual companys total specs out, set
up, percentage of total specs on the market they accounted for,
percentage of total specs set up they accounted for, percentage of
the companys specs that were set up in 2014, number of specs in the
companys top genre, percentage of the companys specs in their top genre,
and percentage of the companys specs in their top genre that they set up.
A quick glance at how these companies performed in comparison to their
counterparts (Agencies and Management Companies).
A complete break down of the specs each company took out and set up by
genre and by month.
A quick note before we move on. All information for the companies, specs and individual
representatives in these sections has been confirmed and updated to the best of our knowledge by
these companies and individuals. While we work with every agency and management company to
verify all of our info, some information may have changed and/or been updated since the finalizing of
this book. Writers, agents, managers and projects all have the ability to move during the development
process of a spec, so while weve done everything in our power to confirm these stats, it is possible
that some data may no longer be accurate at the time of release.
If you add all of the specs listed throughout the Agencies and Management Companies chapters, you
will not come up with the exact number of specs out, or set up in 2014. The reason being, most spec
scripts out from representatives often have multiple Agents and Managers tied to them. In these cases
the spec will count as 1 spec out and 1 set up (where applicable) for every company and individual
involved.

AFTERWORD
Once again, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to this book.
From the reps and writers to the execs and designers, this book would not
have been possible without the cooperation and efforts of a huge group of
people. Were very proud of the work we do at The Tracking Board day-in and
day-out, and creating this book out of years of raw data and hundreds of
listings is a massive task that we are incredibly proud to have accomplished.
Our goal here at TB has always been to make this industry a smarter, better-
informed and more efficient place. We hope that this book is a step towards
fulfilling that mission, and that it can help you in your own personal and
professional endeavors.
