German als and wie = English than, when, and while, as, like

The word than is always used with comparatives. In German, you use als.

Example:

My brother is bigger than me.

That coat is more expensive than mine.

The red peppers are hotter than the green peppers.

These shoes cost less than the others.

The words when and while are used typically used for temporal clauses (meaning they
refer to actions in the past). In German, you use als.

Example:

When I was a child I played outside.

When Sally came home she was hungry.

While I was cooking, my boyfriend was watching football.

While she was singing, her husband was playing the piano.

The word as is used with comparisons, to show equality or inequality. In German, you use
sowie.

Example:

He is as tall as his mother.

He is not as tall as his father.

Charlotte was as quiet as a mouse.

Henry is not as old as Charlotte.

The word like is used with comparisons. In German, you use wie.

Example:

I fought like a lion, but still lost the match.

I fought like mad to get through the crowd.

Hes hungry like a wolf.

Sally is built like a brick.
