A Narrative Report on National Schools Maintenance Week

BRIGADA ESKWELA
SY 2009-2010

I. INTRODUCTION

Luvimin Elementary School is one of the newly completed Elementary school of

Kidapawan City District III. Its area is only 2500 sq. meter. It consists of three (3)
academic buildings. The school is located at the southern portion of the barangay . It is
estimated four (4) kilometers away from the city proper passing through Magpet road.
Farming is the livelihood of most people in the barangay, others are field worker of the
wide banana plantation in the locality. Aside from the fact that people are busy in their
walks of life, still they participate in Dep Eds program Brigada Eskwela. As stated in the
Dep Ed Memorandum known as National School Maintenance Week. This program
encourages people in all sector of the community to participate in the program. Through
this; parents, teachers, pupils, Barangay Officials and all civic oriented groups joined
hand in hand to repair and clean the premises of the school.
As gesture of their willingness to offer the spirit of voluntarism, the PTCA Board
was convened to discuss the said activity. The different working committee was
organized and scheduled the work for the day and responsible person were assigned. The
program really aims to prepare the school before classes starts and lessen the work of the
pupils does academic activities will be given enough time.

I.OBJECTIVES

1. To increase awareness and generate support of the community on the Dep

Ed Brigada Eskwela Program.
2. To link up with the PTCA , Barangay Officials , Purok Leaders , Non
Government Organization in the implementation of the National Schools
Maintenance Week.
3. To strengthen bonding/linkages between parents, teachers and the
community people.

III. SUCCESS STORIES

As answer to the call of the program the stakeholders agreed to start the
program with gardening as early as April 20, 2009 so to have the food production
ready for the feeding program comes the opening of classes. The first to act on this are
the PTCA and Barangay Officials who do the gardening. This was done even before
the launching since this was already agreed during the last PTCA meeting conducted
February of 2009. Yet advocacy was still made and scheduled May 18, 2009.
Solicitations were done by different teachers during vacation with the assistance of the
Barangay Kagawad In-charge of Education. Benevolent persons responded to the
needs of the school, thus the Local Government Unit gave materials worth 10,000,
allocated for Brigada Eskwela for the year 2009-2010.
Painting of the new building was made thru the effort of the parents as a response
to the Brigada Eskwela Program.

The school ground maintains its inviting feature with the monthly grass cutter sent
by DOLE/Stanfilco who adopted the school for 4 years.

June 01, 2009; the school is very much ready for classes. Vegetables like beans,
gabi, camote, okra and petchay is ready for the expected malnourished and less
fortunate children.

Painted classrooms both outside and inside wave and welcome the pupils for the
new school activities.

IV. PROBLEMS MET:

Though the Program was very successful; problems were still met by the school
administrator. There were instances that nobody comes on the scheduled day to work
that the school staff do the job.

To finance for the snacks of the volunteers would mean a lot from their pockets
also with their travel to see benevolent people whom they think could extend financial
and material things for the program.

Though it is their legacy to the department; the name beggars to their ears is
hurting for they work not for themselves but for the school children and the community
as a whole.

The time and effort exerted therein was never recognized by the higher authorities
of the Department. Negative reactions of people whom they run to for little help was
because of the advocacy which they believe should not only be relied to the school but
to the barangay, city and national officials as well.

To advocate the program in a short time which is done every year was not
internalized by some parents. That when made clear to them and was internalized the
working time could be shortened.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS:

.
The school working committee suggested that advocacy should also be done by
the barangay officials considering that the school is the show window of the barangay
as well as of the city government. The national government should also allocate fund
for the program.
