Sri Mookasaaram

Sri Mookapanchashati is a very renowned sloka

literature on Jagadamba Sri Kamakshi, the presiding
deity of Kanchipuram.

The devi is also known as Sri Kamakoti. A boy who was

born dumb and deaf became a famous poet equal to Sri
Kalidasa. This metamorphosis happened thanks to the
blessing of Sri Kamakshi devi.

This stotra literature consists of five parts, namely, (1)

Arya shatakam, (2) Paadaaravinda shatakam, (3)
Mandasmitha shatakam, (4) Kataaksha shatakam, and
(5) Stuti shatakam.

Each part has hundred and odd slokas. Hence the name
panchashati. As the author was born dumb and deaf,
the work came to be known as Mookapanchashati
(Mooka means dumb).

The 20th Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Moolaamnaaya

Peetam (founded by Sri Adi Sankara Bhagavatpada) is
Sri Mookasankarendra Saraswathi Swamigal and as per
tradition he is the author of the above work. Next only to

3
Sri Soundarya Lahari of Sri Adi Sankara Bhagavatpada,
this work has captured the head and heart of many
saints, acharyas and devout worshippers of devi. This
has happened down the ages.

Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Mahaswami, the 68th

Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, had extensively
spoken about this work which reveals Sri
Mahaperiyava's abiding respect and admiration for this
work. Similarly, Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati, the 34th
Acharya of Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetam, had been
reported to have gone into raptures while chanting
these slokas.

Sri Kanchi Mahaperiyava had culled thirty-one slokas

from this magnum opus for nitya parayanam, daily
chanting. These slokas have come to be known as Sri
Mookasaaram the essence of Mookapanchashati.

In the year 2017, The Kumbhabhishekam of Sri

Kamakshi temple at Kanchipuram and the
Kumbhabhhishekam of Sri Bangaru Kamakshi Amman
temple at Tanjore has been performed by Their
Holinesses Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal,
the 69th Acharya, and Sri Sri Sankara Vijayendra

4
Saraswati Swamigal, the 70th Acharya of Sri Kanchi
Kamakoti Peetam.

As a mark of deep respect and reverence, Sri

Sadashivabramhendra Bhakta Jana Samithi dedicates
this book Sri Mookasaaram to the great guru parampara
of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.

The Samithi prayerfully invokes blessings of the

Acharyas and Jagadamba Sri Kamakshi on all those who
helped in the release of this book.

A strange river (called Kamakshi) is sporting on the

banks of the Kampa river. It originates in the icy
mountains and can be seen only by the people of
meritorious deeds. It removes the afflictions of people
even if they meditate on it for a second. Though a
river, it is immovable and filled with waters of
compassion.
