Tutorial # 6 - Solution
1- The figure shows a rotating shaft loaded by two bending forces of 5 kN and 10 kN.
The bending moments at the cross-sections under the loads were found to be 642.9
N.m and 857.2 N.m respectively. Determine the factor of safety guarding against
fatigue failure at section B if the material of the shaft was carbon steel having S ut =
1300 MPa and Sy = 1000 MPa. The shaft is ground at section B and the required
reliability is 95%.

2- The shaft shown in the figure is subjected to a transversal load of 44.5 kN. The
shaft is made of AISI 1095 HR steel (Sut = 830 MPa and Sy = 460 MPa) and rotates
at 1150 rev/min. For machined surfaces and a safety factor of n = 1.6 determine the
shaft diameter d for a life of 3 min. (assume a notch sensitivity q= 0.9)
What would be the shaft diameter if the required reliability is 95%?

3- The figure shows a formed round-wire cantilever spring subjected to a varying

force. The hardness tests showed a minimum hardness of 380 Brinell. It is apparent
from the mounting details that there is no stress concentration. A visual inspection of
the springs indicates that the surface finish corresponds closely to as forged finish.
