Tutorial Sheet-10 (2016-17) [16B1NPH532 (Materials Science)]

1. (a) Seeback series: Bi, Ni, Co, Pd, U,Cu, Mn, Ti, Hg, Pb, Sn, Cr, Mo, Rh, Ir, Ag,
Zn, W, Cd, Fe, As, Sb, Te.
(i) What are thermoelectrically positive and negative metals?
(ii) Among Ni-Fe and Cu-Fe thermocouple, which one have greater EMF and
why?
(b) Draw the variation of thermoelectric EMF E (standard form) as a function of
temperature and discuss neutral temperature Tn and inversion temperature Ti in
that.
(c) Differentiate between positive and negative Thomson effect.

2. The neutral temperature of iron-copper thermo-couple is 2850C and cold junction

temperature is 00C. Find the temperature of inversion? Also, find the temperature of
inversion, if the cold junction is maintained at 100C.
3. The seebeck e.m.f. of a thermo-couple keeping the cold junction temperature at 00C
is given by E = aT + bT2. Find the neutral and inversion temperatures in terms of
constants a & b and show that Ti=2Tn.
4. The e.m.f. in a thermo-couple, one junction of which is kept at 00C, is given by E =
at + (1/2) bt2. Determine neutral temperature, the Peltier and Thomson coefficients.
5. The e.m.f. of an iron-lead thermo-couple, where one junction is kept at 00C and the
other at 1000C is 1185V. When the second junction is at 3000C, the e.m.f. is
675V. Similar readings with silver-lead couple are 371V and 1623V
respectively. Calculate the neutral temperature of iron-silver thermo-couple.
6. Write short notes on following:
(a) Seebeck effect
(b) Peltier effect
(c) Thomson effect
