True to its throwback billing, Blue Skies: Ira Sullivan

Presents the Jim Holman Trio teams a celebrated veteran and
a rising star. Sullivan has been a beloved figure in jazz from his
formative years in Chicago through his decades as a bop guru
in South Florida. Holman, who showed off his prodigious
chops (Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes) on his 2012 Delmark debut,
Explosion!, has embarked on what promises to be an
outstanding career.
In ordering your expectations for Blue Skies, though, it
would be a mistake to get too caught up in any master-and-
apprentice tagging. Yes, the 82-year-old Sullivan, featured on
tenor saxophone and trumpet, plays with a pearly wisdom and
inner strength that has deepened over the years. And, yes,
Holman, 24 when he recorded most of these tracks, brings a
youthful flair to the piano. But Sullivan defies his senior status
with his brimming vitality and flowing invention, while Holman
reveals a beyond-his-years sophistication and taste from start
to finish.
Performing a heady assortment of jazz standards, the great
multi-instrumentalist and soon-to-be-great pianist meet on
common ground in cutting to the heart of the music and making
the songs sing. Graced on five tracks by the special presence
of drummer Roger Humphries, a Pittsburgh legend whose
personal milestones include backing Horace Silver on such
classics as Song for My Father, this May-December teaming
trumps expectations even more.
Holmans father is pianist Scott Earl Holman, a Pittsburgh
native who got to know Sullivan while living in South Florida and
played with him after moving to Chicago (which Sullivan visits
on a semi-annual basis). Jim, who took up piano at a young
age, first heard and sat in with Sullivan at gigs organized by his
father in various Windy City clubs.
Retracing his familys roots, Holman attended the University
of Pittsburgh, where I fell in love with the whole vibe there. The
man largely responsible for that vibe was Nathan Davis,
esteemed head of the jazz studies program, who knew Sullivan
as a fellow alumnus of the Jazz Messengers. (Another faculty
member, Leon Lee Dorsey was also a former Blakeyan.)
Sullivan paved the way for Holmans first album by
recommending him to Delmark Records head Robert Koester,
whose catalog includes several Sullivan recording including two
earlier Presents titles, featuring Lin Halliday and Jim Cooper.
On Explosion!, Holman flexed what he called his rhythmic
aggression alongside a pair of propulsive bop-school
saxophonists, Richie Cole and Frank Catalano. On Blue Skies,
Holman consolidated and softened his attack.
I tried to show a more tender side, he said. I was keen on
using entire phrases as opposed to groups of notes. On the
Benny Golson classic, Along Came Betty, featuring the ace
Chicago rhythm team of bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer
George Fludas, his slow strut and teasingly withheld notes
provide a perfect setup for Sullivans seductive tones on tenor.
On Blue in Green, a trio performance that turned out to be
the middle tune of an unplanned Miles Davis tribute beginning
with Solar and concluding with Someday My Prince Will
Come, his beautiful, wistful introduction gradually broadens
into streaming, Latin-inflected statements that recall his primary
influences, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.
Herbie and Chick are the reason I got into music, Holman
said. Even before I was aware of jazz as a style of music, I
would fall asleep listening to Now He Sings, Now He Sobs
[Coreas influential 1968 classic] and V.S.O.P. [Hancocks star-
studded 1976 effort].
In covering such chestnuts as Blue Skies, Just Friends,
Just in Time and Sunny Side of the Street, Holman resists
the temptation to dress them up in modern finery. Instead, he
plays a heady inside game with Sullivan, who nails the tunes
with his unusually hard-edged muted trumpet and classic tenor.
When Ira plays, he always seems to be having a ball. His spirit
is infectious. (The albums lovely cover portrait of Jim and Ira,
by Sullivans wife Carlena, captures the coolly relaxed vibe of
their collaboration.)
Humphries, a fortuitous last-minute replacement for his
nephew, Greg Humphries, a friend and mentor of Holmans, is
no wallflower, either: listen to his infectious, powerfully
compressed solo on Solar. He is teamed with bassist Nick
Schneider, who makes a strong contribution as well.
Even at this stage in his career, Holman boasts a distinctive
personal style. His disposition toward not repeating himself
further sets him apart. My albums are always going to sound
different, he said, commenting on the stylistic distance traveled
from Explosion! to Blue Skies. One eagerly awaits the third
chapter in what has already been an exciting story.

songwriting technique. I put in a lot more detail to make people flinch and
say, Ooh, hes looking though my window. I just take whatever the
standard is and go somewhere else. I dont want to go in the same direction;
its too predictable. I ask myself, What would a left-handed, Aquarian
bluesman do?
Apparently, such a bluesman would make sure that his music
respected the past while saluting the future with modern-day observances.
Another track, Shine, underscores the point by tackling death that old
blues trope with an unexpected treatment. A delicate ballad with three
separate stories sung by Cannons Chicago blues comrades Mike Wheeler
and Joanna Connor, the song addresses suicide, biracial issues, and
Armenian history in one well-structured swoop.
I was thinking of three different ways that people die, Cannon says of
the inspiration for the song. I dont like my voice in certain settings, like a
soft tone, so I asked Mike and Joanna to sing with me. I sing the last story
about Armenians. I didnt know that they were the first Christians in a land
full of Muslims. They got slaughtered, but its not so much about religion as
it is intolerance. I wrote the story about the biracial issues because I have a

Keefe Jacksons Likely Sos A Round Goal
Liner notes for the new Delmark album
The jazz avant-garde probably didnt even have that label when I
happened to witness the advent of one of its key traits one that
permeates this marvelous new album A Round Goal, by Keefe
Jacksons seven-man international reed-instrument ensemble A Likely
So. On the bill at a concert called Jazz for Moderns in Chicago in 1958
was Chico Hamiltons Quintet, whose then relatively unknown reed
soloist picked up a rather large ebony horn and played a solo that
sounded like Coltrane translated for the human voice. This was of
course Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, and what I had witnessed was the
virtual invention of an instrument Dolphy having driven right
through the register break that previously had typified virtually all
bass-clarinet playing, thus giving the instrument a vivid aura of new
timbral resources, an abundance of meaningful grain and grit.
That transformation of the bass clarinet led to, in Derek Baileys apt
phrase, pro-instrument playing, the development of personal
instrumental techniques in which the instrument is not just a tool but
an ally ... not only a means to an end [but] a source of material. And
those new personal techniques generated new modes of language, ones
in which, among other things, grain and grit, as well as extremes of
register, tend to abound. And that is what we have in A Round Goal,
which may be the most extreme-in-register reed ensemble ever
assembled ranging from sopranino to contrabass saxophone (all
beautifully recorded in performance at Jazzwerkstatt Festival in Berne,
Switzerland on Feb. 20, 2013). Though there are family relationships
among them, the highly personal timbres of these players rub and
scrape against each other at all times. The goal is not to sound
homogeneous but (to borrow a phrase from Persian poetry and the
jazz past) like a conference of birds and Jacksons lovely,
detailed compositional structures give us a virtual (and international)
musical aviary: three Americans (Jackson, Dave Rempis, and Mars
Williams all residents of Chicago), one Pole (Wacaw Zimpel), and
three Swiss (Thomas K. J. Mejer, Peter Schmid, and Marc Stucki).
Ive wanted to explore my compositional voice in the context of
an all-reed ensemble for a long time, Jackson says. [When] I had the
opportunity to propose something for the Jazzwerkstatt festival, I knew
this would be the right time to do it. I also saw it as a chance to

We first met Rich Brenne in about 1984 when we sold records at
one of the first Chicago Blues Festivals. He volunteered to help us load
the unsold records at the end of each day. And he continued to help
out for the duration of our on-location sales at the fests.
Over the years, Rich came to our aid on numerous occasions. He
was a mechanic, an electrician, and a fixer of just about anything that
went haywire at the Jazz Record Mart, at Delmark and, even, at our
residence. The only money he ever asked for was to cover the parts
needed to do the work. Hed occasionally let us give him a classical
record that came into JRM from a purchased collection. He loved jazz
as well as classical. We know he manned the phones during fund-
raising for the Chicago Symphony and also contributed to the
Metropolitan Operas Opera Quiz. He also volunteered when the Irish
American Heritage Center moved into a former Chicago park district
building, where you can see his work on a railing in the form of a harp.
Rich was a man of mystery. He was extremely camera-shy, once
showed me his drivers license which had no picture on it!
We never did learn why he was so secretive.
We went through a series of theories due to his camera-shyness.
No, he wasnt a draft-dodger because we eventually found out he
served his full-term in the army.
broaden the scope of the improvisations by including musicians from
other scenes. I had played in Stuckis venue, the Sonnarraum in Berne,
a few times. He dove into the improvised sections with complete
abandon. Schmid and Mejer I met when they visited Chicago, and I kept
up with Mejer during a few visits to Lucerne. His composers mind,
combined with a natural affinity for improvising, and his balanced
musical personality and poise were great to have. Zimpel I had not
played with before, but I knew his playing from recordings. Some of the
pieces really needed a strong individual voice on the regular clarinet
and he more than provided it. Of course I wanted to have the Chicago
sound in there too, so it was great that Mars and Dave were able to do
it.
The hottest improviser here, Williams nails it every time; energy
has long been his forte, but his compositional focus and sheer
instrumental control are now quite remarkable, on Roses and Round
Goal in particular. Also striking on the latter is the bold swinging
rhythmic profile of Rempis baritone sax solo. While these players dont
often swing a la, say, 1958, they do certainly swing when and how they
wish hear Jackson do so on tenor with warmth and power on
Bridge. The splintered, upper-register ecstasies of Stucki on Was ist
Kultur? speak of an unmistakably European sensibility. Likewise, the
trilling, caged-bird quality of Zimpels clarinet solo on There Is No
Language Without Deceit, with its sotto voce, bluesy conclusion.
Finally, especially in compositional terms, there is the magic glue of
personal timbre permeating the whole its not decorative, not just a
matter of tone color but of rhythm, and harmony, and melody too, all in
a lucid, speaking state of flux and eventual structure. Hear, for instance,
the building Gospel chant of the entire ensemble on the solo-less
Overture, the rattling black blobs of sound from Mejers contrabass
sax on My Time Is My Own and the way he is then cradled to rest by
his colleagues coda, the seductive furry sheen of Schmids bass clarinet
on Neither Spin Nor Weave, his tone there a complex story in itself.
The unorthodox technique, as Derek Bailey said, is [now]
commonplace. And as A Round Goal shows, in the right hands, it is a

After his recent death (August 2) we learned that he was a
Chicago-born (we had guessed at Minneapolis or Duluth). His obit
reveals that he graduated from Lane Tech High School, the University
of Maine and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern
University. Also that he worked for Motorola in Illinois, Wisconsin and
Minnesota.
I dont remember ever disagreeing with Rich over politics - both of
us left of center. He was very active in the Democratic Party in
Minnesota.
When a couple of two-wheelers got broken and we were going to
leave them in the alley for the junkman, Rich learned how to weld,
borrowed some equipment from somewhere and fixed them both,
which are still in use. Also, he combed the ads of the Sunday paper, to
find discounts and bargains for friends he knew were looking for
particular items - DVD players, computers, light bulbs, etc.
Recently he had moved to Las Cruces,New Mexico and then to
Duluth where he passed at the age of 72 on August 2nd. I think of him
whenever I screen films in our den because he put in the speaker wire
inside the walls from the booth to the speakers.

year, our music gets on the internet and sales drop to a small

Thats how we get the used CDs, LPs, 45s, 78s, Edisons, Roll Morton or Louis Armstrong ever recorded.

the rock scene, 45s are not in much demand (and there isnt much jazz
on cylinders and Edisons). Please be aware that were only interested
in jazz, blues and relevant world music. Sure, we have lots of Comedy,
Broadway & Hollywood show stuff that came in almost by mistake. But
youll notice we have a 99-cent/3 for $1.00) sections where youll find
classical, pop, etc. stuff (as well as common jazz/blues items and not-
so-common Jazz and blues in less than ideal condition. ) I should
mention that most jazz fans arent interested in 45s.
So if its jazz, we will probably pay more than the average 2nd hand
record shop. But you get more money if you bring it in. You can park
for 20 minutes on the street in front of the store with your lights blinking
and/or usually for a longer time in the alley behind the store, especially
in the evening when truck deliveries dont clog it. Someone can come
to your home and look at your collection if you insist but we have to pay
someone to make the call so the bid goes down. We will be happy to
supply cartons for the move.
JUMP and SACKVILLE Update
will continue to be active Delmark labels. Theres enough
material from Jump for more than a dozen CDs. And we may use the
label to extend our jazz and blues recording program. Some Triangle
masters will be reissued on Jump as well. The inventory from Sackville
covered less than half their full discography. (Youll perhaps notice that
the Roscoe Mitchell re-issue includes a lot of material not on the
original LP and CD. )
Happily, we have booklets and tray cards for more than a dozen out-
of-print titles which will probably be the first items to re-appear. Lots of
Jay McShann, Junior Mance, Ra[ph Sutton, Buddy Tate, Sackville All
Stars, Dollar Brand, etc. coming. Sadly, a few titles by some great
artists bear a heavy royalty that will limit their distribution to the U.S.
(Exports are sold at lower prices due to the distributors expense from
shipping.) Hopefully there are more un-issued masters.
FAT BABIES SALES
I have been pleasantly surprised at the sales of our first
album by the Fat Babies. The first recording of this excellent
young trad band has sold as well or better than most of our
modern jazz projects. An amazing third of the sales have been
off the bandstand at the Green Mill (Broadway & Lawrence) on
Tuesday nights and the Honky Tonk (18th & Vincennes) on
Sundays.
Although the Green Mill goes back to before the 20s, there
hasnt been a trad band there in ages. Dave Jemilo has an eye
for talent and the Mill has become a reliable destination for
hearing good jazz seven nights a week.
The Honky Tonk Is a barbecue restaurant where the Fat
Babies have played for at least 3 years at 18th & Vincennes on
Chicagos expanding near South Side.
Most of the Fat Babies are in their 20s or very early 30s.
Beau Sample, the bass player is the leader of the band. Alex
Hall, the drummer has his own touch, reminiscent of the late
and much lamented Wayne Jones more Doddsian than
Krupa-ish, The two brass men Andy Schumm and Dave Bock
moved here from Milwaukee and have demonstrated their multi-
instrumentalism. John Otto is the eldest. His clarinet solos on
alternate takes at their recent session for a forthcoming second
Delmark CD seemed all worth issuing. And the band features
Jake Sanders, the uncorniest banjo-guitarist I have ever heard
in a trad band. Paul Asaro is their piano player. Their repertoire
is extensive and seems to include everything King Oliver, Jelly
Of course the crowd at Fat Babies sessions include some
of us oldsters but is made up mostly of young people. Some are
swing dancers but I think theyre in the minority.
I have noticed that interest in trad jazz among the youth has
been growing for some time. Perhaps some get into jazz via the
blues. They seem to know that music worth anything at all does
not lose its validity with the passing of time. We notice that
young jazz fans often come into the JRM and buy records from
every period of jazz. One young lady picked up Louis
Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Roscoe
Mitchell. They see jazz as a body of great and deathless music.
Heck, its been around for more than a century!
NEW STORE HOURS AT JRM
Jazz Record Mart has new hours. We are now open
Mondays through Saturdays from 9 AM to 8 P.M.. Sunday hours
remain the same: Noon to 5 except on the Sundays of
Bluesfest and Jazzfest when we open at 9 AM to present live
music by Delmark artists.
We may have some good news for a former JRM employee.

For Delmark Records 60th Anniversary, Chicago Jazz Magazine did an extensive cover
story and interview with Bob Koester, Delmarks owner. In the next few issues of Rhythm
& News, well run excerpts from the article that we think you may find of interest.

player with the otherwise black Joe Smith Band that
had preceded the Windy City Six at the Winder-
mere at Delmar Boulevard and DeBaliviere.
Delmar and DeBaliviere was sort of the center of
live music in St. Louis at that time. There were
three clubs on one block, and they all had tradi-
tional jazz except one of themThe Barrelwhich
had Miles Davis from time to time as well as
Albert Nicholas, Ralph Sutton, Don Ewell, Dewey
Jackson and Sid Dawson.
CJM: Did the jazz tradition develop in St. Louis
because it was a Mississippi River town and jazz
musicians came up from New Orleans?
BK: Well, a lot of New Orleans musicians came
through St. Louis, but it was mostly going through
townnot staying thereon their way to Chicago,
although the Singleton Palmer Band was an
exception. He had made quite a few records, had
Alfonse Guichard, who had played with Joe
Robichauxs band on the 1935 Vocalian record-
ings. There was quite a trad thing happening
back in the late forties and fifties. You had Pee
Wee Hunt, Glen Grays old trombonist, who had a
big hit with Twelfth Street Rag. You had the Good
Time jazz label, which started with the Firehouse
Five. Good Time was owned by a guy who was
Red-baited or blacklisted out of the film indus-
tryLester Koenigwho later had Contemporary
Records. But his first label was Good Time Jazz
and its first band was the Firehouse Five Plus Two,
which was Ward Kimball and some other Walt
Disney peoplethey were on the Bing Crosby
Show quite a few times.
CJM: You mentioned playing Chicago-style jazz as
opposed to New Orleans jazz. What is the differ-
ence between the two?
BK: Well, if you listen to Bunk Johnson, George
Lewis or Preservation Hall bands, they are basi-
cally playing New Orleans style. The Chicago style
was essentially what the young, white (often
immigrant) guys played, like Benny Goodman. Its
what they did with the music after they heard King
Oliver and various bands. The ODJB came
through; they played briefly at a club not far from
my store, so I am told, on Clark Street or Dear-
born. But most of the music that came out of New
Orleans was not whitethey were mostly black
guys. There was a tremendous migration of black
people from the South in general, and musicians
from New Orleans were a part of it. There is a real
distinct difference in the black musicians from
New Orleansthey grew up with blues, they grew
up with spiritual music and, later, gospel music.
And I think some of the spiritual singers got pret-
ty gospel-likeyou know, pretty rowdy, like Sister
Rosetta Tharp and Mahalia Jackson. New Orleans
was not a major center for country blues, but
there was blues there. I think blues probably goes
back to before the end of the Civil War and grew
from there. There is all sorts of evidence indicat-
ing that some of the language used in blues is
that old. Theres a British blues magazine that is
trying to figure out the source and origin of some
of the blues expressions, but very often they just
cant find them. The Chicago style involves less

ensemble improv and more emphasis on solos,
whereas the New Orleans music was ensemble or
solos with continued improvised ensemble.
CJM: Wasnt there also a difference in the instru-
ments used? In New Orleans the climate and
lifestyle lent itself to performances out-of-doors
for funerals, weddings and the like. These outdoor
performances required loud brass instruments,
while in Chicago the music was mostly indoors, so
you could have a fixed piano, for example, that
you wouldnt find as often in New Orleans jazz.
BK: Thats true.There were pianos in New Orleans,
but the humidity in New Orleans apparently
made it difficult to keep them properly tuned. As
for brass band music, somehow it is now being
accepted, even by the jazz publications that do
not accept any other traditional jazz.
CJM: Youre talking Dixieland?
BK: I dont like the word DixielandI use tradi-
tional jazz. Dixieland is a hate word for me. The
whites picked up ideas from the blacks. The blacks
came up with their various ideasmarching music,
ragtime, people have found traces of various
Caribbean musics in early jazz. It was largely very
improvised like the music played by King Olivers
band. If you listen to the King Oliver recordings you
get a better idea of what New Orleans music was
like then if you listen to Louis Armstrong and the
Hot Fives, since New Orleans music was and
remained for years largely an ensemble music. It
certainly goes back decades before any of it was
recorded, probably into the 19th century.
CJM: What is the first documented recording?
BK: The Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB)
when they recorded they were largely ensemble,
and were supposedly the first jazz band to record.
The trumpet-trombone-clarinet thing was pretty
much the order of the day. Clarinetist Norman
Mason told me that he switched from trumpet to
reed, because he was fooling around with the
clarinet and people from one of the major musi-
cal instrument companies that introduced saxo-
phones came to New Orleans and gave them
away to clarinet players. Mason was then basical-
ly playing trumpet ideas on the clarinet. And he
was given a sax and thats what he played on Fate
Marables Okeh session. Earlier he played trum-
pet in Fates band with Louis Armstrong. He
taught Louis how to read musicthat was in
1916, 17, 18. Years later, when Fate Marable
made his only recording for Okeh Records,
Norman was playing saxophone, and he takes a
solo on Frankie and Johnny. Anyway, he recorded
with the Dixie Stompers on Delmark 204, and
with Singleton Palmer on other labels. A lack of
soul is a pretty good way to describe the differ-
ence between the white players in New Orleans
and the black. And, of course, there was the seg-
regation problem. But New Orleans was, in those
days, more liberal what with the Creole popula-
tion. For instance, the Jones & Collins Astoria Hot
Eight sides, made in New Orleans in 1929 with
Lee Collins and David Jones, was pretty good jazz,
and the clarinet player was white. Another clarinet
player, Alcide Yellow Nunez, was with the
Louisiana Five and was rumored to have been
Creole. I have never been a big fan of Louisiana
Fivethey didnt have a trombone! Just trumpet
and clarinet. (To be continued)
