Ira Sullivan Presents Jim Holman
on Blue Skies
Liner notes for the new Delmark album

True to its throwback billing, Blue Skies: Ira Sullivan

Presents the Jim Holman Trio teams a celebrated veteran and
a rising star. Sullivan has been a beloved figure in jazz from his
formative years in Chicago through his decades as a bop guru
in South Florida. Holman, who showed off his prodigious
chops (Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes) on his 2012 Delmark debut,
Explosion!, has embarked on what promises to be an
outstanding career.
In ordering your expectations for Blue Skies, though, it
would be a mistake to get too caught up in any master-and-
apprentice tagging. Yes, the 82-year-old Sullivan, featured on
tenor saxophone and trumpet, plays with a pearly wisdom and
inner strength that has deepened over the years. And, yes,
Holman, 24 when he recorded most of these tracks, brings a
youthful flair to the piano. But Sullivan defies his senior status
with his brimming vitality and flowing invention, while Holman
reveals a beyond-his-years sophistication and taste from start
to finish.
Performing a heady assortment of jazz standards, the great
multi-instrumentalist and soon-to-be-great pianist meet on
common ground in cutting to the heart of the music and making
the songs sing. Graced on five tracks by the special presence On Blue in Green, a trio performance that turned out to be

Toronzo Cannon John The Conquer Root Delmark DE 831

Reviews of Toronozos first Delmark CD were overwhelmingly glowing. With consistently

powerful performances from Cannon, a batch of compelling original songs, and the
exemplary band work, Leaving Mood is a must-hear CD that should rank among the years
best. Living Blues Southside Chicago native Toronzo Cannon is a genuine triple threat
artist (guitarist / singer / songwriter) as he amply demonstrates on Leaving Mood. Blues
Revue John The Conquer Root features eleven new original compositions ranging from
straight ahead blues to funky soul to the psychedelic rocked out title track. Guitarist Lawrence
Gladney and bassist Larry Williams return but this time around drummer Brian BJ Jones
keeps the booty grooves shakin. Awesome!

Ira Sullivan Presents the Jim Holman Trio Blue Skies

Delmark DE 5010
Chicago jazz pianist Jim Holman brings together an exciting crew for Blue Skies, his second
Delmark CD. Multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, who was there in bebops heyday and played
with Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Art Blakey and others continues to set the standard of
greatness. Each of his phrases is an epiphany. Here Ira plays trumpet and tenor saxophone.
Drummer Roger Humphries embodies the spirit of jazz: sophisticated yet uninhibited. He is
best known for playing drums on Horace Silvers Song For My Father but also played with
many greats including Stanley Turrentine and Ray Charles. Nick Schneider, Dennis Carroll,
(bass) and George Fludas (drums) each add their own brilliant contribution to the musical
conversation.

Howard Alden / Andy Brown Quartet Heavy Artillery
Delmark DE 5008
New York guitarist Howard Alden and Chicago guitarist Andy Brown co-lead a swinging two-
guitar quartet session. Playing a mix of standards, Brazilian tunes, and songs by fellow jazz
guitarists, this recording documents a fifteen-year relationship between the two musicians.
Howard Alden belongs to a small, elite group of the very best jazz guitarists in the world -
guitar legend Johnny Smith. Andy Brown is an uncommonly good player, with a modesty
that brings to mind the fine Canadian guitarist Ed Bickert and a warmth suggestive of Joe
Pass DownBeat. Brown and Alden dont merely mimic an earlier era in jazz history-they
build upon it, offering a freshness of spirit that transcends any particular period or style -

Keefe Jacksons Likely So A Round Goal Delmark DE 5009

The music of Keefe Jacksons all-reed group Likely So is both a new direction and a
continuation of his abiding mission: combining composition and improvisation with an
emphasis on the interaction of the individual musicians. On A Round Goal, this leads to an
exploration of sound-areas including the textural, the melodic, and the instinctual. Mars
Williams, Wacaw Zimpel, Jackson, Marc Stucki, Dave Rempis, Peter A. Schmid, and
Thomas K.J. Mejer play the entire range of saxophones (from sopranino to contrabass) and
clarinets. This album is a live set recorded at the Jazzwerkstatt Festival in Berne,
Switzerland. Also available: Keefe Jacksons Fast Citizens Ready Everyday (DE 571),
