Atlantic sea scallops preciously known as Placopecten magellanicus ,belons to the

kingdom Animalia.Common names are Sea scallop,Scallop,Giant scallop.Population


status is not overfished.These are mostly found in Northwest Atlantic ocean,north
carolina.Scallops have two shells ,the above shell is of reddish pink color and the
below one is white or cream in color.Both the shells are together due to the adductor
muscle, the muscle is itself is large ranging from 30-40mm in diameter.Using this
muscle to snap its top and bottom through this sea scallops can move in water.Their
life is upto 20 years but they can reproduce at an age of 2years,a female scallop can
produce millions of eggs per year.the larvae of the scallop remains till 4 to 6 weeks
and many fishes eat this larvae.Sea scallops are found at an depth of 100 to 300 feet in
water and are found in shallow waters in marine and canada.Fisheries is all round
available in the year,it is sweet and rich in taste. These are very much beneficial for
health these involves vitamin B and are low in fats.Scientists have developed an
undersea camera Habcam with is used to monitor the density of the species in water.A
program named Scallop Research Set-Aside program it provides better information
and also useful for future management decisions.
