Form for changing the description of a course

1. Name of Department and campus proposing the change: Civil Engineering, Hyderabad, Pilani, and
Dubai

2. Details of the course for which change in description (s) is (are) being sought:

S.NO. Course No. Name of Course L P U

CE F211 Analysis of Structures 3 0 3

3. Existing course description(write topics only):

Static and kinematic Indeterminacy, Displacement Methods of analysis: Slope-deflection method, Moment
distribution method and Kanis method; Force Methods of analysis: strain energy method, consistent
deformation method, three moment equation method and column analogy method; Influence Line Diagrams;
Analysis of Moving/Rolling loads; Substitute frame method; Approximate analysis of frames subjected to lateral
loads; Analysis of Three-hinged, two-hinged and fixed Arches; Analysis of indeterminate trusses; Introduction to
Matrix Methods of structural analysis.
4. Proposed course description:
Static and kinematic Indeterminacy, Energy principles; Force Methods of analysis: strain energy method,
consistent deformation method; Displacement Methods of analysis: Slope-deflection method, Moment
distribution method; Introduction to Matrix Methods of structural analysis: Flexibility and Stiffness Methods;
Influence Line Diagrams; Analysis of Moving/Rolling loads (for determinate structures); Introduction to
approximate analysis of frames and trusses; Analysis of Three-hinged, two-hinged and fixed Arches; Analysis of
indeterminate trusses.
5. Justification for the change in course description:
Curriculum review experts and CCDCA observed that the existing course content is too large to be effectively
taught over 41-42 lectures, with adequate importance to the critical topics. Kanis Method, Three moment
theorem and column analogy method are not used anymore and not relevant for the industry today. More
emphasis on Matrix methods due to use in the industry.

6. Have the proposed changes been discussed in Departmental committee on academics (DCA ) and the
cross campus Departmental Committee on Academics (CCDCA)?
Yes. And Yes. Consensus reached.
