WieNebelinHerbsttherearefewplaceswithsomanycarsthatseesuchthickfogasGermanydoesoncloudfree
Autumnnightsfogsothickthatlowbeamsarewellnighuselessandseeingtotheedgeoftheroadbecomesa
challenge.Onsuchnights,theproblem,however,isnotseeingbutbeingseen.Everyyeartherearemassivepileups
becausesomeonecouldnotseethecarortruckinfrontofthemintime.

RearfoglightsarestandardequipmentthroughoutEuropewheretheyareconsideredmoreimportantthanfrontfog
lightsforsafedrivinginthefallandwintermonths.Theyareasomewhatdrastic,lastditchmeasureagainstbeing
rearendedwhenthevisibilitybecomesextremelybad(lessthan50yards)becauseoffogorsnow.Whilemostparts
oftheUnitedStatesrarelyseefogthickenoughtoneedthem,somepartsdo.Inthisarticle,IdescribehowIenabled
therearfoglightsonaU.S.market'96318is(theseinstructionworkedperfectlyonmyM3andshouldworkonany
otherE36)toincreasemysafetyduringitsfirstyearinGermany.

U.S.marketE363ersusetheirownwiringharnesses,switches,relaysandinstrumentclustersthatdeletealmostall
thecontacts,wires,lampsandfusesneededforrearfoglights.Thesethingsarenotdifficulttoretrofitbutthejobcan
beabittedious.Youwillneedtorunwiresfromthefuseboxtothebackofthecar,whichprobablywillmeanlifting
thedriver'ssidecarpeting.Youmayneedtodothisanyway,ifyouareupgradingyoursoundsystem,forexample.
Addingrearfoglightsmightnotbemuchmorework.

Iwillassumeyourcaralreadyhasfrontfoglightsandthatyouhaveaccesstoagoodselfrepaircarmanual,suchas
theE36manualfromHaynes.IwilladddetailsnotgivenbyHaynes.Toenablerearfoglights,youwillneedthe
followingparts:

(4)fusestrip/relaycontactsRealOEMlistedthreedifferentcontacts,theyareallinexpensive,soIorderedall(4)
contactsforallthreepartnumbers.Twoareforathe1.52.5mm2wiresizeandoneisforthe0.51.0mm2wire

lightedmagnifyingglasssomeoftheseconnectors,clips,ectaretiny,andmyeyesaren'twhattheyusedtobe.

PROCEDURE

Thereareenoughthingstodisassembleandenoughpartstoremovethatyoumaywishtakenotesandsavepartsas
theycomeoutinmanillaenvelopes.Anythingthatacceptselectricalcontactsaconnector,afusecliporarelay
socketalsohasacontactretainingrodorcontactretainingshellwhichyoumustfirstremovebeforeyouadda
contact.Donotforgettodothis.Ifthereisaretainingshell,makesuretofirstremovetheshellandthreadthe
contactandwirethroughit*before*insertingthecontactintotheconnector.

1.Tobegin,readoutanyDMEfaultcodesandthendisconnectbattery.

2.ConnectthefoglightandheadlightsrelaystofuseF17.
ConstructaYcablewithacommonfusestripcontactandtwo30cm(onefoot)brancheswithfusestripcontactsat
theirends.OpenthefuseboxandremovethefourTorx10screwsholdingdownthetopofthefusebox.Removethe
fusestotheleftoffuseposition17.Liftoutthetopofthefuseboxtoexposethewiringunderneath.Removethefuse
stripholdingfuses1120.Thereisalockingclipatoneendthatyoupushinward.Dothisandthenpushthefuseclip
downwardandoutofthefusebox.Thefuseblockshouldhaveawhitecontactretainingrodwithanobviousleveryou
needtopull.Don't.Youwilllikelybreakit.Instead,usingajeweler'sscrewdriver,firstpressinthesmall,white
nubbinattheotherendtopopoutthelever,thenpullouttheretainingrod.Pushthecommonfuseclipcontactinto
onesideofthefuseF17untilitclicksintoplace.Itshouldgoineasily.Removethefoglightrelay,K47,andheadlight
relay,K48.Thesearethesecondandthirdrelaysinthemiddlerowofrelays.Unclipandremovetheirsocket'swhite
plasticrelayguide/contactretainers.PushtheothercontactsintothecenterterminalsofsocketsK47andK48.They
shouldgoineasily.Replacethewhiteplasticrelayguides.ReinsertK47andK48iftheyhaveafifthcentercontact.
Otherwise,swapthemforgreenrelaysthatdo(cf.thepartslist).WirefuseF17tothepassengercompartment
foglightswitch.Removethe23screwsfasteningthedriver'ssidekickpanel(lowerfaciapanel(Haynes28.9).Slide
outthedoorwardsideofthepaneluntilitunclips,slidethepaneldownwardandout.Unscrewandremovethe
diagnosticsocketatthebackbottomoftheU.S.kneeprotectionpanelyouhavejustexposed.Removethethreebolts
holdingtheU.S.kneeprotectionpanelasthepanelcomesfree,unplugtheconnectorstotheignitionkeyand
seatbeltreminderchimes.Cutoffa1.5mof0.75mm2wire(ideallyyellow/violet)andattachafusecontacttoone
end.Usingatapecoveredscrewdriver,scrunchaholealongthesideofthewirebundleexitingtherearofthe
fuseboxandenteringthepassengercompartment.Pushthebareendofthewirealongthesideofthebundlewhen
youcanreachitfromtheotherside,pullthewireintothepassengercompartment.Pushthecontactontheotherside
ofthewireintothefreesideoffuseF17.Replacethefusestripcontactretainer,pushthefuseblockbackin,replace
thefuses,andinserta7.5Afuseintoposition17.Slideoutthefoglightswitchbyreachingupbehindthedash,and
squeezingitatthesides(Haynes12.20).Unclipitfromitsconnector.Routethewiretothefoglightswitch,following
theexistingcables.Tieitalongthewaywithcabletiesorpushingitunderthelacingwhereitlooser.Cutthewireto
matchtheothersgoingtothefoglightswitch.Allowenoughslacktoinstallandremovethefoglightswitchandattach
a2.5mmroundfemalecontacttothewire.Findthedetentthatfitsasmallholeinthefoglightswitchconnector
contactretainingshell.Usingaknifebladeorasmalljeweller'sscrewdrivergentlyprytheshellawayfromthebump
andslideitoff,upthewiresawayfromthecontacts.Threadthewirefromthefuseboxthroughpositionfourofthe
contactretainingshellandinsertitintothefoglightconnector.Itshouldclickeasilyintoplace.Ifyoucanfindan
existingcablethatrunsfromthedashtotherearofthecar,youmayskipthefollowingstepswhicharerather
involvedandtookmeacoupledaystodo.(Iwasalsoinstallingelectricrearventwindows).

3.Removethefrontseatandseatbelt.

4.Removetherearseat.

5.Removethehoodreleaseleveranditsspeakercover(firsthalf
ofHaynes11.9).
Notetheslotreceptableinthecarpetthatthespeakercoverplugsinto.Removethetheroundscrewknobthatholds
downthecarpetnearthegaspedal.

6.Removethesidetrimstrips.
Carefullyunclipthetrimstripsfromthereardoorsill(ifyouhaveafourdoorcar)andthefrontdoorsill(Haynes
26.3and26.4)Thetrimstripsmaypullstraightout.Alternatively,ifyouhaveacoupewithasinglelongstrip(such
astheauthor's'96318is),youmayneedtoliftthebackofthetrimstripup,offandaplasticdiskandthenmoveit
outandbackdown.Theentirestripwillthenslidetowardthefrontofthecarandcomefree.Ifthisisthecase,you
willlaterneedtwopeopletoreinstallthetrimstrip.

7.Removethedriver'ssiderearseatbolster(Haynes11.26)

8.WirethefoglightswitchtoconnectorX13.

Pullbackthecarpetinginthedriver'sfootwelltorevealX13,acoupledpairofhunky,black30pinconnectors.Move
theslideonthesideofoneoftheconnectorsuntiltheycomeapart.Separatetheconnectorsandslideeach
connector'scontactretainershellawayfromitscontacts.Followingtheexistingcableswherepossible,layoutan0.75
mm,preferablyyellow/whitewirefromthefemaleconnectortothefoglightswitchconnector.Crimpafemale2.5
mmroundcontactoneachend,threadtheendsthroughthe
contactretainershellsatthecorrectpositionsandtheninsertthecontactsintoposition5ofthefemaleX13connector
andposition3ofthefoglightconnector.Slidethecorrespondingretainshellsbackontotheirconnectors.
Decidewhereyouwillputtherearfoglightinuseindicator.Givenhowobnoxiousrearfoglightsaretootherdrivers,
itisimportantthattheyhaveanobviousindicatorlighttoremindthedrivertoshutthemoffoncetheyarenolonger
needed.Therearfoglightshavetheirassignedindicatorintheinstrumentcluster.Thisisprobablythebestofall
placestoaddone,exceptforthreecomplications.Toremovetheinstrumentcluster,youmustfirstremovethe
driver'sairbagandsteeringwheel.Thisisnotthemostagreeabletaskandifdoneterriblywrongitisdangerous.The
instrumentclusterconnectoralsorequiresaspecialcontactthatispartofaBMWinhouserepairkit.Thismaymean
havingtobuyawholekitofcontactsratherthanjusttheoneyouneed.Finally,manyU.S.marketinstruments
clustershavetheyellow,rearfoglightpictogramblackedout.

Ifyoureallymusthavetheindicatorwhereitwasintendedtobe,youwillneedacontactfrompacketHofPartsKit
IVforOnBoardElectronics(anpartskitforBMWmechanics)Note,BMWnowoffersthecorrectconnector,whichis
showninthepartslistabove,anda1.2Windicatorlamp,P/N62111368299.Ifyourinstrumentclusterhasablacked
outpictogram(itshouldbejustrightofoneforthefrontfoglights),youmightmaskoutanapertureholeatthat
spot,carefullyremovethepaintwithacottonearswapofsolvent,andthensolderinahighbrightnessyellowLED
connectedtoa680ohmresistor.Alternatively,thereallyadventurousmightswapinanAustralianorU.K.market
instrumentcluster....

Thatsaid,itisprobablyeasiertomounttheindicatorlightinoneofthespareplasticpanelsonthecenterconsolejust
infrontofthegearshiftlever.Thesepopoutwhichmakesforeasiermachining.

9.Runwirestotherearfoglights.
Unhookthebackofthedriver'ssidecarpetfromtherearseatriserandliftupthecarpetalongthedriver'ssideof
thefloor,torevealasquareplasticconduitcoveringcablesrunningfromthefrontofthecartowardtherear.Open
thetrunkandpullbackthecarpetalongthedriver'ssidewallofthetrunktogainaccesstothecablerouteasit
entersandpassesaroundthetrunk.Layoutone0.75mmandone0.5mm,preferablyyellow/whitewire
fromnearlythedriver'ssiderearlampclustertothefoglightswitchconnector.Extendthe0.5mmwirebeyondthe
foglightswitchsothatitreachestheindicatorlight.Routethe0.75mmwiretoconnectorX13.Crimponamale2.5
mmcontact,threaditthroughtheproperpositionofX13'scontactretainershellandinsertthecontactintoposition5
ofthemaleX13connector.SlidethecontactretainshellbackontotheconnectorandpushthetwoX13connectors
backtogether.Removetheconnectorsfromthetworearlampsclusters.Slidebacktheircontactretainingshells.The
looseendsofthetwowiresfromthefrontofthecar,willbecomeasolderjunction,X1214,withthewirestotherear
foglights.Findaneasilyaccessibleplacetotuckthesewireswithsomeslacktomakeiteasytogettothejunction.
Routean0.75mmwirefromthejunctiontothedriver'ssiderearlampconnector.
Routea0.5mmwirefromthejunctiontothepassenger'ssiderearlampconnector.Thereisaslightlydestructivebut
correctwayofdoingthiswhichistopunchoutthecenterpinsofthestudsholdingdownthetrimstriprunningalong
thesparetirewellfromtheonelampclustertotheotherandthenpulloffthestrip.Thenthereisthehack
electrician'swaywhichisasfollows:
Removethetwoplasticnutsthatholdingdowntheflatplasticfloorpanelkittycornerfromthebattery.
Removethebatterycover/firstaidkittrayifyouhaveone.
Gentlypulloutthebottomofthetrimstripnearthebatteryandthreadthecablefromthepassengersiderearlamp
connectorintothesparetirewell.
Followthecablerunningunderneaththetrim,stayinginsideoftheplasticstud.
Gentlypulltheleftmidsectionofthetrimstripthentherightandthreadthewireunderneaththetrimandabovethe
twobottomspringclips.
Gentlypulloutthebottomofthetrimstripnearthedriver'ssiderearlampclusterandthreadthewireupward,
stayinginsideofthecableuntilthewirereachestheleftlampcluster.
Pulloutthebottomofthemoulding,firstonesidethentheotherandverygentlytensionthewiresothatitrisesup
insidethetrimstrip.
Wrapandsolderinsulatethe0.5and0.75mmwiresfromtherearlampclusterswiththetwowiresfromupfront,to
formjunctionX1214.Insulatethejunction.
Crimp2.5mmdiameterfemalecontactsontothewiresrunningtotherearlampclusters,feedthecontactsthrough
thecorrectpositionsofthecontactretainershells.
Ifyouhavea4door,onthedriver'sside,insertthecontactintopin1,andonthepassenger'sside,intopin6.
Ifyouhavea2door,onthedriver'sside,insertthecontactintopin3,andonthepassenger'sside,intopin7.
Slidetheretainingshellsbackon.
Hookuptherearfoglampindicator.
Connectthe0.5mmrearfoglightwiretoindicatorlamp.
Connecttheothersideofthelamptothenearestgroundlugusinga0.5mmbrownwire.

10.Modifyingtherearlampclusters.
Ifyouhavewantedtoandhavenotalready,youmighttakethisopportunitytoreplaceyourrearlampclusterswith
white,"clearEuropean"turnsignals.Thesehaverearfoglampsthatwork.IfyouhavestockU.S.rearlamps,youare
almostthere.Youjustneedtoaddthemissingpinsfortherearfoglamps.

IfyouhaveahelpfulBMWdealer,askthemtogiveyouadamagedrearlampclusterwhichyoucansalvageforpins.
Betweenaccidentsandwaterloggings,youmaynothavetowaitlong.Thereappeartobetwotypesofrearlamp
clusters:anoldstylewhichhadaremovablefoilandplasticcircuitboardandthecurrentstylewhichhasfoiltraces
tackgluedtothehousing.Ifyouhaveeitherstyle,youshouldbeabletosolderandepoxyinthemissingpin.You
mayhavetofirstdrilloutthecorrespondingpinifyouarefittingpinsfromonestyleintotheother.

Ifyouhavethenewstyle,itisprettyeasytopopoffthemainplasticshroudandfullyexposethepins.Usingaknife,
pryoffthemushroomheads(leavingthestems)thatareholdingdowntheplasticconnectorshell.Theshellis
otherwisefreetomove.Removejustenoughsothatyoucanpullofftheshell.Afteryouputtheshellbackon,
scratchthestemsandtheplasticaroundthem,mixandapplysometwopartepoxy,letitsetthenhardenitinan
ovenat70degCforacouplehours.

single,wiredAMP/ELOfemalecontactwith50cmof0.5mmblack
wire.Icanprobablydigupapartnumberforthebarecontactifyou
haveacompatiblecrimpingtoolanddie,andwanttorunthecorrect
wireallthewayintotheconnector.

orneartherearfoglightswitch,particularlyifyoulivewhere
peopledon'tknoworexpectthestandardwiring.

theinstrumentcluster.
