Tennis has evolved into the game that we love to play.

The sport of tennis has been played

for hundreds of years, but the game as it is known today is about 130 years old. Tennis is a
sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each
(doubles). Each player uses a racquet that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with
felt over a net into the opponent's court.

The game was first played on a grass court in Wales. Eventually the game was played
by many people all over on a hard court of concrete and asphalt and occasionally carpet
(indoor). The shape of the court also changed from hourglass to the modern rectangular with
similar measurements. The court is 23.77 metres long, and 8.23 metres wide for singles
matches and 10.97 metres for doubles matches. Before the net was 1.53 metres high at the
posts and only 1 metre at the centre. It was lowered to its present height of 1.08 metres at the
posts in 1882.
