Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)

I. Plot:
Shoya Ishida, one day, walks along a bridge and thought of committing suicide. And
then, remembers his elementary days when his teacher introduces to their class a new student,
Shoko Nishimiya, who is deaf. Because of Shoyas incapability of understanding Shoko, he
then starts bullying and harassing her, making fun of her, and even throwing away her
hearing aids. As a result to that, he was pointed out by the teacher when the principal asked if
Shoko is being bullied. Shoya pointed to his friends, saying that they did the same thing but
denied it. Shoya felt guilty because of what he did and had to pay for the hearing aids he had
thrown away (which are very expensive). In high school, he became lonely and was secluded
by his classmates because of his past. One day, he decides to visit Shoko to return her
notebook and apologize to her. While Shoya was handing Shoko her notebook, it accidentally
fell off the bridge. Shoko jumped off the bridge to get her notebook and Shoya followed.
Yuzuru, Shokos younger sister, captured the scene when Shoya jumped off the bridge. The
photo was then uploaded online which caused Shoya to be suspended from school for a week.
After that, Shoko says that she wants to reconnect with Sahara, the only person who was kind
to her in elementary. Shoya also runs into Ueno, his closest friend in elementary who also
bullied Shoko. Not long after, Shoko gave Shoya a gift to confess his feelings for him. At
school, Kawai reveals Shoya's past and blames him for bullying Shoko, even though she took
part in the bullying herself. Because of the problems with Shoya and his friends, Shoko
attempts suicide by jumping off her balcony. Shoya pulls her but falls into the river and at the
hospital goes to a coma. One night, Shoko has a dream where Shoya says that he is dying.
She runs to the bridge, crying. Shoya wakes up from his coma and runs to the bridge as well
and found Shoko. He says that it was all his fault, that Shoko shouldnt blame herself, and
asked her to help him live a normal life.

A lot of teenagers probably can relate to this story because it includes social anxiety,
shyness, self-harm, lack of communication because of barriers, and many other things that
most of the teenagers are experiencing right now. It gave me flashbacks about the same
situations that I have encountered. It gave a huge impact in my life and the way I view things,
I will surely not forget this.
