YPN BoardWALK Training Save the Date

The Young Professionals Network, in Leadership Joplin Symposium
conjunction with the United Way of
Southwest Missouri, is excited to offer October 7, 2010
board education and training through Speaker – Jeff Zande from Hallmark Cards, Inc.
BoardWALK. This training program is an
outstanding opportunity to gain knowledge
on the different types of boards/committees
in the Joplin community, and provides necessary information, such
as the requirements needed to serve on a board/committee. The entire
training session has been condensed down into one, four hour session
on August 31st from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Wildcat Glades Conservation
& Audubon Center. After the training is complete, each participant
will receive a diploma and have a chance to network and visit with
their fellow graduates. The best part is, for the paid YPN Members,
the training is included at no charge! Registration is limited to 30
people, and YPN members have first right for these openings. After
August 23rd, registration is open to any other Chamber Members for
a fee of $10.00 per person. For more information or to register, please
contact Jeff Meredith by calling 417.624.4150 or at

President’s Message
A Major Commitment

The start of school is just a few weeks away and, shortly after that, the business community will be asked for
help on a variety of fronts. As you read the article on TREK in this issue, you will note the name is changing
from “Teaching Reading to Every Kid” to “Together Reaching Every Kid.” The name change symbolizes the
broader effort to make sure students at all levels have the support and guidance they need to graduate from high
school, at minimum, and be prepared to go into a job or continue their education or both.

The Joplin School District has energized the broad community with its “Bright Futures” initiative involving the
schools, faith-based and social service organizations and the business sector. The “new TREK” portion will be
the focal point for volunteers to help students, whether it is being an academic coach, a lunch buddy or another
form of mentorship. In the near future, you will see a more specific list of student support, based on a process we Rob O’Brian
are going through right now to better determine what business really needs from the younger workforce. President

One of the key goals of the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative is to achieve a minimum 87% graduation rate across the region. Some
school districts are already there, some are close and some have a ways to go. But beyond graduation, it’s important that the students have
the skills needed to obtain and maintain jobs that allow them to support themselves and their family. To find out what employers need, the
JRPI has been conducting a series of focus groups with companies around the area. Alexandria Marketing Research has conducted these
groups, so the input is provided by an independent third-party with no bias. These groups have been held in Joplin, Carthage, Neosho and
Pittsburg. While the groups have been diverse in types of business and location, there are common threads in what they see as needed in the
younger workforce.

First, the businesses in these groups cite a lack of professionalism and basic work skills including: showing up on time; adhering to dress
code; communication skills (including not using cell phones, iPods, computers for personal uses and especially in front of customers or
clients); written communication skills (e-mails, business letters); time management skills; expectation of higher salary and promotion after
the “First day”; work ethic (including attitude of “it’s not my job” and willingness to learn); drive for self-improvement; teamwork skills; and
life skills.

All of this information, and more, will be shared with all of the school districts in the region. But the second part of the process was to ask
what business can do to help. Some of the ideas included: programs such as job shadowing and internships; involving high school students
in actual company work projects; more business courses such as personal finance, business finance, business etiquette and business ethics all
instructed, in part, by business people; mock interview sessions with business people; more business input with the curriculum: and company
tours.

Ask the Executive Coach...
by Daniel P. Chiodo, CMEC | Impact Training & Development

Q:
I committed to some big initiatives at the beginning of the year, but now I turn around and see it’s already
August. With only a few months to go in 2010, where do I start?

A:
This is a great opportunity to see whether you see the glass as half empty or half full. I’d say it’s half full—
full in that you have five whole months to make some headway on these initiatives. We’ll talk about how to
approach them, but first, let’s have a “teaching moment.” This is one of those times when you need to look at
what you intended to do, what you actually did, and where you ended up.
You intended to pace yourself and not procrastinate, but procrastination came into play-- like an unhealthy food that’s hard to resist.
The food is so tempting that although you tried to just have one small bite of it, your sample piece turned into a “supersized” piece.
Why not try a different approach the next time you are facing a big project—(or your present challenge, since there is still time left.)
You have many initiatives and only a few months to do them.
1. PRIORITIZE each initiative so that you know in what order you should handle
2. Take each initiative and assign a COMFORTABLE DEADLINE to it. You have five more months left, so perhaps you
could do one each month.
3. Create an ACTION PLAN for each initiative so that you know what steps must be taken and when they must be acted
upon.
4. ATTACH NAMES to as many action steps as possible—noting people who will be responsible for different action steps
OR people who you will contact about the project.
5. Keep TRACKING the project so that you know you are ahead of schedule on each one.
6. CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS of each initiative you achieve and then remember that the next time you are going to
tackle it earlier so that you have even more time to breathe.
Page 2
Remember that people like dealing with others who handle their time well and meet deadlines early. If you have trouble in this area
you may not be chosen for important assignments. Consider the fact, too, that people you report to promote people who are not only
competent in their roles and good communicators, but they also look for people who are great time managers.
