Enjoying the Best of Summer Fruits
This summer has produced a bountiful crop of fruits. My
local farmers market and grocery store have supplied an
abundance of budget-friendly ingredients for my favorite
summer dishes. While I often taken advantage of the fruits on
sale, sometimes I have questions about how to prepare and
store them.
Alice Henneman, a registered dietitian and educator at the
University Nebraska Cooperative Extension, recently provided
the answers in her Food Reflections newsletter. The follow-
ing tips can help you prepare and enjoy fresh fruits and keep
them at their most flavorful. The recipe for Rainbow Fruit
Salad also is a great way to use a variety of your favorite fruits.

Though the outside skin of a refrigerated banana will turn
dark brown, the inside will remain light-colored.
Fruits that should be picked or bought ripe and ready-to-eat
include apples, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, oranges, pine-
apple, strawberries, tangerines and watermelon.
Should fruits and vegetables be washed before They’re put away?
The Food and Drug Administration advises that we wash
our fresh fruits and vegetables when we’re ready to eat them
rather than when they’re first purchased or picked. Here are
some FDA guidelines for safely handling fruits and vegetables:
• Thoroughly rinse raw fruits and vegetables under run-
ning water before eating them. Don’t use soap, detergents or
bleach solutions.
• If necessary, scrub firm produce – such as melons and
cucumbers – with a clean produce brush to remove surface
dirt.
• Try to cut away damaged or bruised areas; bacteria can
thrive in these places.

• If buying fresh, cut produce, be sure it is refrigerated or
surrounded by ice. After purchase, put produce that needs
refrigeration away promptly. (Fresh, whole produce such as
bananas do not need refrigeration.) Fresh produce should be
refrigerated within two hours of peeling or cutting. Leftover
cut produce should be discarded if left at room temperature
for more than two hours.
What’s the Easiest Way to Peel
and Slice a Mango?
If you find yourself trying
to tango with a mango, try
this method:
1. Wash the mango. Cut
in half lengthwise by slicing
off each fleshy cheek of the
mango vertically along the
flat side of the center seed.
2. Hold one mango half
peel-side down and score
the fruit down to the peel
(but not through it) in a tic-
tac-toe fashion.
3. Hold the scored portion with both hands and bend the
peel backward so that the diamond cut cubes are exposed.
Cut cubes off peel, then remove any remaining fruit clinging
to the seed.
How Can I Keep Cut Fruit From Turning Brown?
Keep cut fruits such as apples, pears, bananas and peaches
from turning brown by coating them with an acidic juice such
as lemon, orange or pineapple juice. Or use a commercial
anti-darkening preparation, frequently called a “fruit protec-
tor” such as Ever-Fresh or Fruit-Fresh. Follow the manufac-
turer’s directions.
Cut fruits as close to serving time as possible. Cover and
refrigerate cut fruit until ready to serve. Avoid leaving cut fruit
at room temperature for more than two hours.

New Trends in Home Theater
There’s a fun trend in home entertainment developing
that I think you’ll be excited to learn about. This trend is
quickly changing the home theater experience in living
rooms everywhere and it’s called “convergence”. Conver-
gence is simply your home computer or laptop working to-
gether with your TV and stereo to create a complete home
theater experience. A lot of times you’ll hear the term “me-
dia center” used when referring to convergence devices.
Gateway started this trend in 1996 by building a TV tuner
card and DVD player into a desktop PC. This allows you
to watch television and DVD movies right through your
PC on your big screen TV. In an attempt to create the all-
American couch potato, Gateway also developed a unique
keyboard to control it all. The keyboard was wireless with
a built in mouse. This allowed you to control your home
theater movies and computer applications from your lap
without having to get up!
As technology races on, companies like HP have built
media center PCs specifically for the living room. These
units come with high end graphics cards and HDMI (high
definition multimedia interface) outputs, home theater sur-
round sound cards, multi-piece speaker systems, TV tuner
cards and the media center software needed to operate it all
easily and efficiently. Wow, that was a mouthful. Don’t let
this tech talk scare you away though. The software that’s
been developed for these systems has been created to be
as user friendly as possible. Trust me – I’m that guy that
gets confused and irritated by all the remotes, buttons, and
instructions for simply getting a movie to play. However, I
can operate media center software and it’s refreshing!
What does the future hold for convergence? A lot!
We’re already at a point where iPods are downloading
high definition movies to be played in anybody’s home
theater that has a dock for it. Media center PCs hooked up
to your home theater can also have the capability to record
television and cable programs right to your hard drive for
viewing later. This is essentially TiVo in your computer.
There’s even software that will allow you to be at work or
away from the home and you can set new program record-
ings on your computer’s hard drive right over the internet.
With the new 802.11N wireless standard you can wire-
lessly stream movies with audio from your media center
home theater in the family room all the way up to your at-
tic bedroom. Now that’s a cool way to get all your friends
to come over for those late night get-togethers!
As T.O. would say … ”don’t forget your popcorn”.
The basics of creating this experience in your own
home are simple. Swing in and visit the folks at Dakota PC

Q: I inherited some sterling flatware from my grandmother.
It is a Towle pattern called Candlelight. – Ann, Willmar, Minn.
A: Your pattern was introduced in 1934 by Towle Silver-
smiths, which began in Newburyport, Mass., in 1857 as Towle
and Jones. The company mark features the image of a lion
mounted on a script letter “T.” The lion is said to be based on
the family coat of arms.
Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware Value and Identification
Guide by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99) is an invaluable refer-
ence for identifying and determining the approximate value
of various sterling patterns. Some of the values for Candle-
light in this guide include a steak knife, $40; a tablespoon,
$70; and salad fork, $35. These prices are higher, I think, that
those currently found in the actual marketplace.

Sliding-Glass Door Won’t Glide Freely
Q: I have a sliding-glass door leading to my porch, and
it sticks very badly on opening and closing. How can I fix
this? – Joyce in West Palm Beach, Fla.
A: Sticking or even hopping out of its track is a com-
mon problem for sliding doors, and one that can be pre-
vented with regular cleaning and maintenance.
Get in there right away with a vacuum (small handheld or
a small vacuum hose attachment) and suck up all the loose
dirt and debris that is cluttering up the metal track running
under the door. This is the groove in which the door slides,
and if it’s dirty or gunky the door won’t slide smoothly. Use
a toothbrush and a damp cloth to scrub away gunky spots.
Next, inspect both the track and the door rollers. If the
track is bent, it can be straightened by placing a thin but
sturdy wooden block in the track over the bent area, bracing
it with a foot or your hand, and then hammering the area

Hiring Contractors for Remodeling
If you have a remodeling project in mind, late summer is a
good time to line up your contractors. Construction crews are
coming to the end of their busy sea-
son and looking for work to keep
themselves going over the cooler
months, especially the winter.
Before you begin: Take written
bids from at least three contractors.
Be detailed in your specifications
when it comes to the type of wood
you want, the model and color of
cabinets, the number of coats of a
specific paint, etc.
Ask for references of any contrac-
tors you interview, of course, and
call them. Ask if the project was
completed on time and at the
promised cost. But don’t stop there.
While it’s still warm and crews are
out, drive around your area and
make note of the addresses of homes where work is being
done, as well as the company name and phone number of
any work vehicles in the yard. When the projects are com-
plete, approach the homeowners and ask whether they were

High hopes for Jeff Gordon
Jeff Gordon’s hometown could be considered Vallejo, Calif.,
where he was born, or Pittsboro, Ind., where he grew up.
Based on his record there, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is
another place where Gordon feels right at home. He has won
NASCAR’s annual visit to the Brickyard a record four times. (As
an aside, Gordon has won five times at Infineon Raceway, the
track closest to his birthplace.)
Gordon’s most recent Indy victory occurred in 2004. In the
five races since then, though, Jimmie Johnson has won three
times and Tony Stewart twice. Forty-eight races have passed
since Gordon’s last victory anywhere. He won at Texas Motor
Speedway on April 5, 2009.
Still, a winless Gordon is better than most drivers who
have won multiple races this year ... literally. Gordon, 38, ranks
second in the Sprint Cup point standings, trailing only Kevin
Harvick, and has more top-five finishes (10) than any other
driver.
“Our team’s been consistently running up front,” said
Gordon. “We just haven’t had the car to win or all the pieces as
a team to get ourselves into victory lane.
“At times we’ve had the car. For whatever reasons -- blame it
on me, blame it on incidents, I don’t like to point fingers -- but
we haven’t gotten to victory lane. ... We think we’ve got some
things up our sleeve for Indy, but I’m sure that’s what a lot of
guys out there are thinking.”
Only five drivers -- Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby
Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarbrough -- have ever won
more races at NASCAR’s highest level than Gordon. Three more
victories would put him ahead of everyone except Petty and Pearson.
But it’s been“82 and holding”ever since the 2009 Texas victory.
