Instructional Procedure/Activities
INTRODUCTION (Small Group/Pairs)
Gather either Group 1 or Group 2 on the carpet. These students will discuss either Jack and the
Beanstalk (Group 2) or Red Riding Hood (Group 1) with a partner, sharing their favorite parts and why
they liked/didnt like the book.
Differentiation
The setting, characters, beginning, middle, end graphic organizers were used to decide whether students
would complete the sentence strip summary of Red Riding Hood or Jack and the Beanstalk.
Students who missed some sections of the graphic organizer or who missed writing important story
events in the graphic organizer will be in Group 1. They will organize sentences for Red Riding Hood.
There are six different sentences, and they are shorter in nature.
Students who completed mastered every aspect of the graphic organizer will be in Group 2. They will
organize sentences for Jack and the Beanstalk. There are eight different sets of sentences, and they
are more complex.

The sentence strip posters will be hung around the classroom.
If any students have difficulty putting the sentences in order, then these students will complete additional
story events practice during small group reading time.
