Pomona College gifts 463 acres, commission duties update

T
he council passed an agreement for
accepting a gift of land from
Pomona College, tabled proposed
changes to the municipal code and ap-
proved condominium plans during a busy
Tuesday night meeting.
The council passed a memorandum of
understanding (MOU) allowing the even-
tual transfer of 463 acres in Evey Canyon
from Pomona College to the city. The col-
lege had used the property to conduct re-
search in the past.
The Claremont Wilderness area is a
natural jewel and provides an important
connection to nature, G. Gabrielle Starr,
president of Pomona College said in
press release. President David Oxtobys
commitment to sustainability is reflected
in his important work to bring this agree-
ment forward and enhance the colleges
and communitys commitment to open
spaces for all.

Fire Department to battle the two-alarm blaze, which
was moving uphill at light-to-medium intensity. The
fire, dubbed the Johnson Fire by authorities, reached
100 percent containment at around 9 p.m. after burn-
ing three acres, Inspector Licon said.
There were no injuries or structures damaged.
A voluntary evacuation order was also established
for residents living in the northernmost part of
Claraboya, with the Hughes Center serving as the
makeshift evacuation center.
All traffic on Mountain Avenue was blocked at
Base Line Road until 11 p.m.
Ken and Carol Rowland, who live in the condos on
Highpoint Drive, chose to evacuate. They spent Thurs-
day night watching TV in the Hughes Center as they
waited for the go-ahead from officials to return home.
The first thing we heard was a helicopter flying re-
ally low, Mr. Rowland said.
About that time, Mr. Rowland said a neighbor was
knocking on doors in the complex, telling people to
come outside and see the blaze.
The Rowlands never saw the flames, but they de-
scribed seeing an orange glow emanating from be-

Claremont High track gets a face lift

T
he Claremont High School track
was resurfaced and repainted re-
cently using taxpayer funds that
are earmarked for outdoor facilities that
are open to both students and the public.
The work was paid for out of Recreational Assess-
ment District (RAD) funds, which Claremont resi-
dents pay through their property taxes. RAD money
can only be spent on outdoor areas accessible to the
public, such as playgrounds and blacktop court sur-
faces, according to CUSD Executive Director Facili-
ties and Nutrition Services Rick Cota.
The project began just after graduation and was
scheduled to be finished on Wednesday, with the re-
opening of the track planned for Thursday. The con-
tractor, Beynon Sports Surfaces, laid the new surface
over the existing one and repainted all of the lines and
markings needed for track and field competition.
The track hasnt been updated for 15 years. The
project took about three weeks at a cost of $275,000.
According to the Beynon website, the new Olympic-
quality surface Offers athletes the highest level of
control and maximum energy return.
According to Mr. Cota, other RAD-funded projects COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff
include the artificial turf installed at CHS last year. CUSD officials used Recreational Assesment District funds to resurface the track at CHS. The work, which
has not been done in 15 years, took three weeks and cost $275,000.
The track is popular with walkers and runners who
wish to exercise on a flat surface that is more forgiv-
ing to the body than pavement. Free Webb Schools football school and college coaches including work on funda-
