HUDSON COUNTY ISS a COMMUNITY / re) COLLEGE Christopher Wahl Dean of Arts & Sciences cwahl@hecc.edu 201-360-4030 25 Journal Square Jersey City, NJ 07306 wwwheee.edu Tel: 201 714-7100 Dr. Charles Nelson Assistant Chair ‘Wenzhou Kean Universtiy January 31, 2015 Dear Dr. Nelson: ‘This is a letter of enthusiastic recommendation of Ms. Patrizia Barroero, whom I have known since 2012. Patrizia is an energetic, caring teacher who fosters student success. Patrizia has been a strong member of our ESL faculty, both as an adjunct and as a temporary-full-time instructor. In both capacities, she has stood out as a contributor to student success and retention. Her students adore her; she consistently receives positive evaluations. Students appreciate her teaching not just because she has a pleasant personality and engaging teaching style, but because they pass departmental tests at the end of the semester. In addition to her work in the classroom, she has taken on non-teaching roles, including working with the annual Literacy Day. In this role, Patrizia helped the College fulfill its community service mission by inviting children and their families to campus to celebrate reading. Participants, many of whom are living below the poverty level, left the event with new books. Patrizia is also a recognized campus citizen. She frequently contributes to The Perennial, a faculty publication, In her classes, Patrizia's energy is unmatched. Students regularly comment on her humor and enthusiasm. This is not to say she doesn’t hold students to high standards. In fact the only student comment that might be construed as negative is that she gives a good deal of work. This in-class and take-home work translates into preparedness for end-of-semester departmental writing tests and the ability to achieve success in discipline-related classes. As a final note, I'd like to comment on Patrizia’s organizational skills and work ethic. While at HCCC, Patrizia has often taught a load of 15 or more credits of ESL classes. ‘Some semesters she has balanced teaching loads at multiple institutions. Conversations with her reveal that despite a teaching load laden with writing-intensive classes require robust feedback, Patrizia remains a voracious reader. She continues to achieve excellence in her teaching and her contributions to student learning beyond the classroom. Based on what | know of Patrizia, though, none of this has been surprising. I can strongly recommend Patrizia for oversees teaching. She has always represented the College well. She is an independent, motivated faculty member who effectively balances standard college policy and practice with her own talent and insight in teaching students. If you would like to contact me with any questions about Patrizia’s work at HCCC, I would love to answer them. Sincerely, Christopher Wahl Elena Nehrebecki Director ESL Bilingual Program enehrebecki@hccs. edu 160-4177 To Whom It May Concern, June 10, 2014 | am providing this letter of reference on behalf of Ms. Patrizia Barroero, who was hired as an adjunct ESL faculty at Hudson County Community College in September of 2012 and was offered a temporary full-time position for the spring 2014 semester. Ihave observed Ms. Barroero’s class and found her teaching structured and her students engaged in meaningful writing activities. Her observation reports from level coordinators are also positive, consistently commenting on Ms. Barroero's detailed preparation for her lessons. In addition, her student evaluations are very plausible. | have noticed similar thoroughness in her preparing students for the departmental tests of Writing. Ms. Barroero’s attention to detail and specifics in each student paper as well as her interpretation of their responses can be seen as a part of her philosophy as an educator and ESL instructor. Her students perform well on the departmental tests. Ms. Barroero is devoted to the Program, closely follows the assigned curriculum and complies with the College's guidelines. She has been actively attending all professional development offered by the College and the Program, and often it spurs reconceptualizing of her own teaching and the production of supplemental materials. | believe that Ms. Barroero will be an asset to any educational institution or organization, Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me either via email or by phone. Sincerely, A= Elena Nehrebecki, M.A., M.Phil. Hupson County COMMUNITY COLLEGE June 11, 2014 ‘To whom it May Concern It is my pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Patrizia Barroero. I have known Patrizia for two personality and work ethic would make her a years as a teacher and professional colleague. Patri welcome addition to any academic program. We both teach at Hudson County Community College, within a large (1,500+ students) ESL/ EAP program. I have collaborated with Patrizia on several projects, and as a level coordinator, I am grateful to have such a dedicated instructor teaching in Level 3. Patrizia’s students appreciate her energy, warmth, and commitment to their success. As an example, I have witnessed that she assigns many more writing assignments than average, and she provides detailed feedback. Recently, when I wanted to pilot an online program to supplement our grammar text, I knew that Patrizia's insight would be invaluable. Additionally, Patrizia is always willing to collaborate on materials’ design and creation, and one of her writing prompts has become part of the level curriculum Patrizia's interest in student writing extends beyond the classroom; at Essex County College, she co- founded the ESL writing magazine Connections; here, at Hudson County Community College, she has supported our ESL magazine, Diversity, by contributing student writing and artwork. She is also a member of the interdepartmental committee on planning Literacy Day - a community outreach project to encourage reading at every age Lastly, on a personal note, I find that both instructors and students benefit from Patrizia's pragmatic optimism.
