Abstract
In this work effects of pouring temperature, die temperature and pressure application on
the cast microstructure of a piston like part made of LM13 alloy were investigated. The
results showed that the average dendrite arm spacing of a phase and the aspect ratio of
eutectic silicon particles of squeeze cast samples were about 30% and 43% smaller than
those of gravity cast samples, respectively. The average dendrite arm spacing of squeeze
cast samples was increased from 14 m to 22 m with increasing the pouring temperature
from 630 C to 830 C. The average aspect ratio of eutectic silicon particles of squeeze cast
samples was increased from 1.30 to 1.85 with increasing the pouring temperature from
630 C to 830 C. Furthermore, the average dendrite arm spacing and aspect ratio of
eutectic silicon particles were increased by increasing the die temperature from 150 C to
300 C and the increase was sharper for gravity cast samples.
Keywords: Squeeze casting, LM13 alloy, pouring temperature, die temperature, microstructure, eutectic silicon
modification.
