The First Computer Programmer

Ada Lovelace was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron. She was taught by Mary Somerville, a well-known researcher and
scientific author, who introduced her to Charles Babbage in June 1833. Babbage was an English mathematician, who first
had the idea for a programmable computer.

In 1842 and 1843, Ada translated the work of an Italian mathematician, Luigi Menabrea, on Babbage's Analytical Engine.
Though mechanical, this machine was an important step in the history of computers; it was the design of a mechanical
general-purpose computer. Babbage worked on it for many years until his death in 1871. However, because of financial,
political, and legal issues, the engine was never built. The design of the machine was very modern; it anticipated the first
completed general-purpose computers by about 100 years.

When Ada translated the article, she added a set of notes which specified in complete detail a method for calculating
certain numbers with the Analytical Engine, which have since been recognized by historians as the world's first computer
program. She also saw possibilities in it that Babbage hadn't: she realised that the machine could compose pieces of
music. The computer programming language 'Ada', used in some aviation and military programs, is named after her.

A Carved City
From the 9th to the 14th centuries, when Europe was still struggling out of the Dark Ages, the Cambodian Empire of

Suryavarman II (1113-1150). The area covers about 400 square kilometres and is full of the finest examples of Khmer art
and architecture. Tourists are always amazed at the scale of the place.

In Angkor Wat you will find more than 100 stone monuments and temple buildings, each of which contains countless
statues, sculptures and reliefs that have weathered extremely little over the last 800 years. To see the whole thing can
take several days. The most important temples to visit in the area are Angkor Wat, especially at sunrise or sunset; Angkor
Thom, the remains of the capital; Ta Prohm, a palace overgrown by jungle; and Bayon.

Getting a visa
Visas are required to enter Cambodia. You can obtain one on arrival at Siem Reap International Airport for $20, and 1

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was one of the first international film stars. Between 1914 and 1967 he made dozens of comedy films that
people around the world enjoyed and he became very rich. It was a big change from his childhood when he, his brother
and his mother were living in London without any money.
Chaplin was born in England but moved to America at the age of 23. He was part f a comedy show that appeared in
theatres around the country. He became very popular for his physical comedy. People loved the way he fell, rolled and
jumped on stage, while the ohter actors tried to sing songs or do other acts. In 1913, he got a job with Mack Sennet, who
ran a film company called Keystone. Sennet already had a number of successful film comedians at Keystone, and people
laughed at their crazy films in cinemas around America. Sennet knew that the young Chaplin had a lot of talent and
thought that people would like to see him in films.
Chaplin and Sennet decided that Charlie needed a new character. Chaplin went into the costume store at Keystone and
started to try different costumes on. He put on trousers and shoes that were too big, a jacket that was too small and an old
hat. Chaplin said that he had no idea of the character until he put the clothes on, but as soon as he did, he knew that he
had found something special. This character was The little tramp, a poor man with nowhere to live.
When the first film starring this character appeared in cinemas in 1914, the audiences loved him from the start. He was
a kind, clever character who had bad luck in a difficult world. Films at the time were silent but Chaplin managed to
communicate a lot with emotion - both happy and sad without words. While other comedians were making films with lots
of fast, crazy action, Chaplin touched the hearts of people, all over the world. Soon, The little tramp was famous
wherever there was a cinema.

Doug Allan, Wildlife Cameraman

I recently spent two years in the Arctic filming the series Blue Planet. I love being in an environment
that hasnt changed for 20,000 years. Of course its freezing, but it must be a healthy place because
you never catch colds.
When Im filming, I like to really feel how lonely the environment is. Filming underwater involves
cutting through thick ice and diving in tied to a line. The person at the other end has to be ready to
pull you out fast if necessary.
Originally I was a research diver for the British Antarctic Survey project, but for me science lacked
excitement. Id always enjoyed photography, and whenever camera teams passed through, they
encouraged me to watch and learn. I was then able to move into filming in 1985 and have
concentrated on Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.
I prefer to be face to face with the animals Im filming. I havent been in the water with killer whales
yet, but I plan to. Of course, its dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. Theyre big animals and
can move fast, so Id be stupid to film them searching for food!
Ive never had problems with polar bears, although once I was frightened when one tried to get into
my tent. Polar bears are bold, clever and dangerous. But I made this one see I wasnt about to attack
it Im sure it realised I wouldnt hurt it.
When I come back home from my trips, I work in the mornings and spend the afternoons swimming to
keep it fit. Now Im fifty, filming is harder. The challenge for me is to continue to deliver high-quality
work.

1. In this text, Doug Allan is describing...

A. The challenges of the environment he works in.
B. The career opportunities in TV camera work
C. The difficulties of having to work alone.
D. The beautiful scenery of the Arctic.

2. What does Doug say about his early career?

A. He wasted the years he spent as a scientist.
B. It was a good chance to learn about filming.
C. He was bored by working only in the Antarctic.
D. It taught him how to become a skilled diver.

3. When talking about killer whales, Doug says that...

A. He will only film them from a safe distance.
B. He has always been careful when diving with them.
C. He tries to avoid any danger by facing them.
D. He believes there are safe opportunities to film them.

4. How does Doug describe his experience with a polar bear?

A. The animal was much more afraid than Doug was.
B. Doug felt nervous that the bear might come back.
C. The bear seemed to know Doug wasnt a danger.
D. Doug realised he was wrong to trust polar bears.

5. What might Doug say about his job as a cameraman?

A. Now Ive reached fifty, I realise the dangers involved in getting the best pictures are too
great.
B. Im glad Ive gave up working as a scientist because Im now in a position to be able to
retire early.
C. Although I find the work more difficult now Im not as young, I still have other film
projects Im keen to do.
D. Ive made wildlife films in every country in the world, but I want to keep filming until I get
too old.

.... I must tell you about our holiday this year - it was one of the best we'd ever had. No, we weren't staying in an
expensive hotel, but a youth hostel! I know what you're thinking: we must be crazy! But we arent - I just wish
we'd discovered youth hostels years ago.
Now that I'm back at university again luxury hotels are a thing of the past, and I was complaining about this one
day to a friend who said that she and her family never stayed anywhere but hostels. I had no idea that hostels
could be somewhat similar to a cottage or a castle. In fact there are four different grades - simple, standard,
superior and special so you pay an overnight charge according to the kind of hostel you stay at. You can't stay
more than three nights at a time but that didn't bother us because we wanted a touring holiday. Basically you
look after yourself although most hostels serve breakfast and some of them offer an evening meal if you arrive
early enough. There are a few rules like having to be in by 11 p.m. in the evening and out by 10 a.m. in the
morning but otherwise you're free to do what you want.
Now I really believe that the best thing about this whole holiday was meeting so many different and interesting
people. I used to think hostels were only for the young and noisy, but not any more. You can't imagine what a
variety there was!
Anyway, what are you all doing next year?

(b) to mention some benefits (a) people
(c) to offer instructions (b) touring
(d) to warn about some disadvantages (c) accommodation
(d) variety

3) Only one of these people will choose to stay in a hostel. Choose which one you think it will be.

(a) I cook for my family all the year round, and although I enjoy doing it, I really don't want to have to
provide any meals when I'm on holiday, especially as I plan to go out and enjoy myself dancing the
night away!
(b) I've worked hard for many years and now that I've got a bit of free time I plan on seeing as many
different places as possible. If I can save on the cost of accommodation, I'll have more to spend on
train or bus fares.
(c) We want an opportunity to meet different sorts of people and get to know them, so we thought we'd
spend a couple of weeks relaxing in one place - our jobs mean moving about so much that it would
be nice not to carry a suitcase for a fortnight!
(d) I'm a student and I don't have a lot of money to spare. I don't like getting cold and wet though, so if
the weather isn't good, I'll just make myself a pot of coffee and stay in all day reading an exciting
book.

Explore the Villages around Hartbridge
Many visitors come to Hartbridge to see the wonderful art galleries and museums, the beautiful buildings and the fantastic
parks. Few people go outside the city, and so they miss out on experiencing the scenery and the fascinating history of this
beautiful area. This brochure will tell you what you can see if you take a short bus ride out of the city.

Camberwell
The historic village of Camberwell was once the home of the wealthy Hugo family. They lived in a huge country house,
Camberwell Court, and owned all the land in the area. The family sold their house in the 1940s, and it is now open to the
public. You can spend a whole day walking around the house and gardens. There is a small exhibition about the family, a
childrens play area, a gift shop and a restaurant. But the village of Camberwell is also worth a visit. There are some
beautiful cottages with well kept gardens, and there is a small church which dates back to the eleventh century. To get to
Camberwell, take Bus 46 from the Bus station. Buses leave every two hours.

Hidcot
Hidcot is an attractive village situated on the River Owell. Wildlife lovers should visit the Nature Park to the south of the
village, where there are large numbers of rare birds and flowers. However, you will probably see plenty of wildlife from the
bridge in the village centre! In Hidcot, you can take a two-hour river cruise - a great way to see the countryside and learn
about the local wildlife from a guide. If you prefer to explore the river by yourself, its well worth walking one and a half
miles along the river to the pub The Boat which cannot be reached by road. Here, you can hire small boats and explore
the river at your leisure. To get to Hidcot, take Bus 7A to Reeford. Hidcot is half way between Hartbridge and Reeford.

Tatterbridge
The beautiful village of Tatterbridge was home to the childrens writer Jane Potter, whose stories of Benjamin Bear are
loved by adults and children around the world. Jane Potters home is now a museum and tea shop, and is well worth a
visit just for its wonderful gardens. It also has a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and books. Tatterbridge has a
number of interesting shops including an excellent cake shop, and Wendys Giftshop where you can find lots of unusual
gifts made by hand by local artists. Lovers of Jane Potters books should also walk to the Green Valley woods, which have
not changed since Jane Potter wrote her stories there one hundred years ago.
To get to Tatterbridge, take Bus 4 from outside the cinema. It takes about 40 minutes to get there.

Moordale
This old industrial village is the highest village in the area. Here in the hills, coal was found in the late eighteenth century,
and people came here in great numbers to take it out of the ground and transport it to the nearby towns. Many industries
grew up in the area, including a paper factory and a cotton factory. The industries all closed down in the nineteenth
century, and since then Moordale has gone back to being a quiet farming village. However, if you walk from the village
centre up the steep hill to the north, you can still see the paths where horses used to carry the coal. There is a four mile
walk around the village which has some amazing views, but walkers are must be careful as the path is steep in places
and they could slip. To get to Moordale, take Bus 7A to Reeford, and then take the number 38 bus to Moordale.

able to move into filming in 1985 and have concentrated on Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.
I prefer to be face to face with the animals Im filming. I havent been in the water with killer whales yet, but I plan to. Of
course, its dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. Theyre big animals and can move fast, so Id be stupid to film
them searching for food!
Ive never had problems with polar bears, although once I was frightened when one tried to get into my tent. Polar bears
are bold, clever and dangerous. But I made this one see I wasnt about to attack it Im sure it realised I wouldnt hurt it.
When I come back home from my trips, I work in the mornings and spend the afternoons swimming to keep it fit. Now Im
fifty, filming is harder. The challenge for me is to continue to deliver high-quality work.

He felt uncomfortable in his borrowed coat, and even though Mike had promised him that it was almost a perfect fit, he
felt that the sleeves were too long, and the coat didn't really go with the colour of his trousers. He checked in his pocket

that evening at all.
For a few minutes he thought about giving the whole thing up, going home and making some excuse for the following
day. But he knew that this chance would not come again, and he would hate himself if he did not take it. Slowly, he
walked through the rain to her street.

The savannah

The tourist looking at the African savannah on a summer afternoon might be excused for thinking that the wide
yellow grass plain was completely deserted of life, almost a desert. With only a few small thorn trees sticking out
through the veldt, there seems to be almost no place for a living creature to hide.
However, under those trees you might find small steenbok, sleeping in the shade, and waiting for the night to fall.
There may even be a small group of lions somewhere, their bodies exactly the same shade as the tall grass around them.
In the holes in the ground a host of tiny creatures, from rabbits and badgers to rats and snakes are waiting for the heat to
finish.
The tall grass also hides the fact that there may be a small stream running across the middle of the plain. One clue
that there may be water here is the sight of a majestic Marshall eagle circling slowly over the grassland. When he drops,
he may come up with a small fish, or maybe a grass snake that has been waiting at the edge of a pool in the hope of
catching a frog.
The best time to see the animals then, is in the evening, just as the sun is setting. The best time of the year to come is
in late September, or early August, just before the rains. Then the animals must come to the waterholes, as there is no
other place for them to drink. And they like to come while it is still light, so they can see if any dangers are creeping up
on them.
So it is at sunset, and after the night falls, that the creatures of the African veldt rise and go about their business.
