Reflection:OurAdminseemedtobeonboardwithourideas,supportiveofourideasandplans.They
seemedexcitedaboutwhatweweredoingwhichinturnmademefeelexcitedaboutwhatwedoing.
TheyaskedustotakechargeofthemorningannouncementsandgetthemoffourPAandfigureouta
waytostreamthemtotheclassrooms.Iwasmostexcitedabouttakingtheleadonthisand
immediatelygotlotsofideasforhavingagreenscreen,addingstudentandstaffspotlights,lettingkids
wearcostumeslikelittlenewsanchors,wewereabletobeascreativeaswewantedtobe.Rarelydo
yougetthechancetohaveaprojectwithablankslateandmakeityourown.Itwouldbealotofwork
butwewerelookingforwardtoitbecauseitseemedsofun,interesting,andbeneficialtoourschool.
Reflection:WefoundoutwewereinchargeofoneofthedifferentiatedPDsessionsduringPre-service
week.Wehadatechnologysessionandwewereexcitedtogetthatfacetimewithourstaff.We
decidedtofocusonGAFEandmakingsureeveryoneknewhowtoaccesstheirdrive,sharedocs,
searchourstaffsharedgooglefolder,andotherbasictointermediateskills.Asweweredeveloping
ourideaswedecidedweshouldprobablysplitinto3groupsandeachtakeagroup.Oneofuswould
dobeginner,onewoulddointermediatewithafocusonGoogleClassroomandIwoulddotheexpert
groupthatreviewedthebasicsofGooglebutintroducededtechtoolsthatwouldbenefitteachingand
learning.EachofusleftthemeetingknowingourperspectivegroupsandwouldworkonaGoogle
SlidesforourpresentationtoSITandthenwewouldcreateapre-assessmenttogathermoredatafor
ourinternship.

Reflection:Everyonewasonboardwithoursession.Weexplainedthatwedidntwantthetechnology
tobeonemorethingbutitwouldenhanceourteachingandlearning.Wewantedittobeusefuland
alignwithwhatwealreadydoasfarasSIOPandbeabletoincorporateUDLstrategies.Therewasa
lotofexcitementfromtheleadershipteam,theyallwantedtoknowiftheycouldcometooursessionat
leastoncebutourprincipalsaidnobecausetheyhadtheirownsessionstolead.
Reflection:WethoughtthataGoogleclassroomwouldbethebestplacetohouseallofourtechnology
support,anddocumentourPDsessions.Wecreatedaclassroomandshareditwithourcommitteeso
thatinthefuturePDsessionswewouldallhaveaccessasteachersandbeabletoutilizetheresource
forPD.
Reflection:Iledtheexpertgroup.EveryoneseemedtobeexcitedtolearnaboutthetoolsIshowed
them.IintroducedPlickers,Kahoot!Voki,Padlet,BlendspaceandSymbaloo.Itseemedthatafter
everyonesaidtheycantwaittouseit,itwashardtogetthemtoactuallyuseit.Idontknowifitwas
becausetheyalreadyhadwaystopresentitanddidnthavetimetocreatenewthingsortheyjust
forgotaboutit.TheinitialengagementandexcitementwasevidentbutImnotsurehowtogetpeople
toactuallyfollowthroughonwhattheysay.
Reflection:Whenweanalyzedthedataitwasclearthatpeopleareeverywhereonthescale.Most
peoplescatteredinthemiddleateithera5,7or8.Thattoldusthatweneededtodomorepractice
andpracticalapplicationswithGAFE.Mostpeoplearesomewhatcomfortablewithbeingableto
searchforbotheducationalandpersonalsitesontheinternetandourfocusdoesntneedtobeabout
howtousetheinternet.Thefewthatstruggleareprobablythesameasthosethatstrugglechecking
theire-mail.Mostpeopleusetechnologytoteachwholegroupandtheresultsshowedusthatweneed
tofocusmoreonteachersusingtechnologyforsmallgroupinstructionandassessment.Thisidea
wasconfirmedbytheinterestofstudents.Theysaidtheywantedtofocususetechnologytoteach
towardmastery&waystoreachourELLstudentsbecauseweworkwithaveryhighpopulationofELL
studentsandteachingtowardsmasteryissomethingthatoftengetspushedtothesideoncewemove
tothenextindicatorandobjective.Someconcernsthatweneedtobeawareofarewaystoaddress
laptop/technologyissueswithoutitinterferingandinterruptingwithteaching,likeinterruptingsmall
group,Alsowaystomonitorstudentssotheystayontheappropriateanddesignatedsiteinsteadof
clickingonexternallinksorgoingwheretheywanttogo.Mostlyitseemslikemanagementof
technologyisabigconcernforourteachersthatweneedtosomehowaddress.Everyonebelievesthat
technologycanhelpteachersteachbetterandmostbelievetechnologycanhelpstudentslearnbetter
soIthinkthatourstaffisopenmindedandreadytolearnwhatwehavetooffer.
Reflection:AftertakingDr.Marcovitzsclassithelpedmebecomemoreconfidentinwritingagrant
proposalforaproject.ThatcombinedwithNataliesclassonMultimediawashelpfulbecausewe
knewwhatequipmenttogetandwhatwouldwork.Wewereexcitedtoapplyforthegrantandare
anxioustoseeifwewillgetitornot.Wehopewewillbecausewearenervousaboutthe
hand-me-downequipmentthatissupposedlycoming.
Reflection:TheparasweresoappreciativeandexcitedtogetsomehelpandtraininginGoogle.They
feltlikeeverythingwaspassingthembyandwerentsurehoworwhentogetaccesstotheinformation
andtrainingweprovided.Wejustgottogooverthebasicsofhowtologintodrive,accessourstaff
shared,creatingafolderforthemandsharingadocumentoftheircellphonenumbers.Wediscussed
waytheycouldusethiswiththeirclassroomteachersasanonlineparalogandwaystouseitwith
eachother.Theyallsaidtheyfeltmuchmorecomfortablelogginginandfindingthingsnowthatthey
haddoneitoncewithus.
Reflection:myteamimmediatelyputmeinchargeofitbecauseIhavethemostknowledgeofit.We
couldntdecideonateampicturebecauseoneteammatedidntlikethepicture,andsoitwasnever
officiallyfinishedinthatsense.Everyonehadaccesstoitanditwashelpfulforstudentsandparents.
Wehadhomework,fieldtrips,specialdates,infoabouteachteacher,somethingaboutus.Itwas
difficulttomaintainandupkeepwithouthavingsharedcommitment,responsibilityandaccountability.
Itseemedlikeitwasjusteasierforthemtodumpitonmeandletmetakecareofitwhichwas
frustrating.AnotherthingaboutthewebsitesweretheywerenteverreallyenforcedbyAdminlike
therewasntanyaccountabilityforhavingoneorconsequencesfornothavingone.Idontthinkitwas
thestrongestpiecetoourinternshipbutitissomethingthatweneedtocontinuetodevelopand
pursue.Someothergradelevelsanddepartmentshadmuchmorebuyinandsuccess,like2ndgrade
whoalreadysomethinglikethisinplace,ESOL,andPEwhoalsomadetheirown.Thelackoffollow
throughcouldhaveresultedtoofromthefactthatitwassupposedtobeaface-to-facesession
followedbyaworksessionthatwascutshort.Theonlinelearningforthisisprobablynotthebestway
toimplementitanditwasntourfirstchoicebutitisthewayithappened.NexttimeIThinkifour
adminwantseachteamtohaveawebsitetheyhavetorealisticallyprovidetimeforthemtocreatethe
sitesandaddresourcesotherwiseitisperceivedasonemorethingtobedone.
Reflection:Itwasnicetobeabletousemynewskillsandknowledgetohelpanotherteacher.Itwas
obviousthatherinternshipdidntprepareherforanMCPSschoolwith1:1Chromebooks,aswere
findingmanyteacherprepprogramsdonot.Ithinkthereissomethingthatneedstobesaidfor
trainingnewteachersintechnologyandrequiringthemtotakeatleastoneifnottwoedtechtools.
Overallitwasaverypositiveandproductivesessionforusandtheteacher.
Reflection:Ifeellikethishadpotentialtobeoneofthestrongerpartsofourinternship.Thecommittee
wasveryeffectiveinfindingandaddingresourcestobuildthecurriculumlessonsandassessments.
Someoftheothergradeshadalreadybeenusingsomeofthewebsitessoeachteamwasabletouse
thattobuildtheirs.Mykidsreallylikeditandwouldaccessitevenwhenitwasntourtechnologytime.
Theyespeciallylikedthecollaborativeoneswheretheycouldseeoneanothersprogressandtryto
catchoneanotherinthetypinggame.Ithinkthatitwasreallyhardtogetthemessageoutanditis
definitelysomethingthatwehavetocontinuetopushandpromotenextyearinmoreeffectiveways.
Weneed100%buyinfromstaffinorderforthistocatchonandgrowanditisincrediblyimportantfor
ourstudentstodeveloptheseskills.Iknownextyear2ndgradehopefullywillwanttouseitwhenthey
introducechromebooksatthebeginningoftheyearnowthattheyhave1:1devicesandIthinkfinding
meaninginwayslikethatwillhelpitgetusedmore.
Reflection:ItwasveryexcitingtogettheequipmentandsetuptheTVstudiofortheannouncements.
WeexperiencedafewhiccupslikeusingGoogleHangoutsandrecording/streaminglive.Itisactually
somethingthatstillcomesup,whyarenttheylive?Wejustfeelliketherearenorealbenefitstodoing
theannouncementsliveandtherearemorebenefitstorecordingdaybefore.Oneforexampleisbeing
abletocombinevideosandaddingspotlightsfromotherteachersaboutsubjects,clubs,andupcoming
events.Anotherdrawbacktodoingitliveisthatwewouldhaveamuchsmallerpoolofstudentsto
selectfrombecausetheydontarriveearlyenoughforschool.Itwouldbetoodifficulttosendthemto
classfirstbuttheyhavetogetbreakfast,makesuretheyrenotmarkedlateorabsentandthenbeback
withenoughtimetopracticereadingtheannouncementsbeforeactuallyfilming.Logisticallyitsounds
likeanightmare.Mostteacherswereveryreceptiveandenjoyedtheannouncements;however,we
hadafewkinksandcomplaintsalongtheway.Wehavespotlightsthathappen3daysaweek,every
weekfromotherstaff.WewerealsoabletotrainourMediaSpecialistinhowtousetheequipmentso
shecouldfilm2ndgradedebatesandsharethevideoswiththeclassesviaherownGoogleClassroom.
Wearestilllookingtodevelopandexpanditnextyearandhopethatmoreteacherswillgetinvolved.
Wereexcitedthatwehavethestudioandtheopen-endedpossibilitiesthatitbringstoourstudents.
Reflection-Someofthecommitteemembershadgoodideasaboutwaystousethewebsitewiththeir
classes.Wemade2suggestionstoeitherdoitonceaweekasaspecialinthecomputerlabsinceit
hasobjectivesforeachskill,orintroduceitintheclassonceaweekandhavestudentsusethesiteto
mastertheconceptsthroughouttheweekincenters.Everyonewasverypositiveandsupportiveofthe
weeblysitewecreated.Theyagreeditwasagoodideaforourcommitteetopilotthecurriculumfirst,
beforesendingitofftotherestofthestaff.Imexcitedtouseitwithmystudentsandanxioustohear
somefeedback.
Thefeedbackwasverypositive.Onecommonthemewasfindingtimetoutilizeit.Themedia
specialist,alsoonourcommittee,wasabletoteachsomeoftheskillstothekindergartenclassesshe
seesweeklyattheirspecial.Thiswasanewwaytouseitandshesaidthestudentslikeditandwere
gettingthehangofit.Thefocusofthismeetingwasreallytofigureoutthebestwaytosharethiswith
therestofthestafftocreatebuyinandensureteacherswouldactuallyuseitandthatstudentscould
accessitanytimefromanywhere,theyjusthadtoknowaboutitfirst.Wecreatedaonepagerthatthe
committeeusedtosharewiththeirteammatesandwealsoposteditaroundthecommonworkrooms,
inthebulletin(techtipoftheweek),andviae-mail.Itwillbeinterestingtoseehowmanypeopleuseit
beforetheendoftheyear.
Reflection-Severaltimesthroughouttheyearourprincipalhasreachedouttousasateamandalso
asindividualsforassistanceusingGoogleApps.Wewereaskedtoconsiderbecominga
dual-languageimmersionschoolnextyearandweneededawaytocollectavotequicklyand
accuratelyforbothstaffandparents.ShereachedouttoustohelpherdesignthesurveyusingGoogle
Forms,formatit,andensurethatpeoplecouldonlyvoteonetime(usingMCPSaccount)butthatthey
wouldremainanonymous.Wewereabletohelphersetitup,shareit,andviewtheresultsina
comprehensiveformatforbothstaffandteachers.Shewasveryappreciativeofourhelp.Wehave
sincedoneothersurveysforherandhavealsosharedtutorialsandfreeresourcesthatshecanteach
herselfhowtogetbetteratusingtheseapps.
Reflection:Weneedtomakestaffmoreaccountableforlookingatthetechtips,atleastlookingatit.
Onewaywecanimprovethisisbymakingscreencaststoshowthemtutorialsandbuildingalibrary
andusingitmoreasonlinelearning.Weneedtofindmoreincentiveforstafftowatchandfollow
through.Forthetechnologycurriculumwemightbeabletofindanindicatorthatitmatchessothat
teacherscanuseitforgrading&reporting.Itmightbemoreofanincentiveifitdirectlyconnectstothe
indicatorsand/orobjectsforexampleinwriting.Forthemorningannouncementsweneedtogetmore
staffinvolvedinshootingit,usingtheequipmentintheirclassesforprojects,doingmorespotlights
andcreatingvideos.Ireallythinkthereissomuchthatcanbedoneanddoneeffectivelythrough
videothatwejusthavetoshowstaffhowsotheycatchon.Lookingattheresultsofthesurvey,talking
withstaffandreflectingonthispastyear,ourfocusshouldbetogetmorestaffinvolvedinsharingtheir
skills,knowledge,andresourceswithoneanother.Itisimportanttobuildourcommunitytogetherand
utilizeeachother'sskillsasmuchaspossible.ThereisnoreasonthatithastoremainKari,Ashley&I
doalltheworkandaretheexperts.Thenextstepisreallyspreadingouttheskillsandknowledgeand
bringingothersintothisleadershiprolesowecanachievemoreforourschoolandourcommunity.
