TECHNOLOGICAL INSTRUCTION FOR

INTERMEDIATE STRESS RELIEVING

OF STEEL CASTINGS
This technical instruction covers the scope for intermediate Stress Relieving in steel
casting during upgradation required to overcome the problem of appearance of
crack in the process.
1.0 Scope
1.1 Intermediate SR shall be applicable for GS17CrMoV510 and GS20Mo5 grade
castings in the following areas of castings, where welding is required for
repair of defects in:
(a) Volute area .
(b) Welding deposit in a particular defective area having depth more than
80 mm amounting to 35 kg or more.
(c) Through and through punctured body.
1.2 When welding ratio in casting exceeds 50 kg/T, including dimensional
welding, intermediate SR shall be called for irrespective of material grade.
1.3 When distance between two defects (having depth of 60 mm or more,
deposit quantity 20 kg or more in each defect) is less than 500 mm, the
casting shall be required to give intermediate SR.

2.0 Method
2.1 After completion of 40% weld depth in all the defective areas, the casting
shall be sent to Intermediate SR directly without cooling to room
temperature.
2.2 After completion of total welding, the casting shall be sent for SR directly
without cooling to room temperature.
2.2 Temperature of intermediate SR shall be like the recommended SR
temperature for the casting whereas soaking time shall be corresponding to
the weld deposit completed.

3.0 Relief
Intermediate SR is not applicable in Fabrication Welding .
