Every summer and winter you can go
by vintage tram along the streets of

CITY BY THE SEA

The sea is always around the corner, with winding inner-city
canals, the harbour and picturesque car-free islands. The
archipelago is close enough to go for a day trip, but is still a
great contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city. You can reach
beaches, rugged cliffs and fishing villages in just over an hour
from central Gothenburg – and even use the same public
transport ticket the whole journey.

THE ARCHIPELAGO – EXPLORE THE ISLANDS
The archipelago of Gothenburg stretches along the coast like a
string of pearls. You don’t have to travel far from the city to find
charming villages, stunning nature and beaches. Seal safaris,
sea-fishing and boat excursions are just some of the activities
available here.
From central Gothenburg it is just a short trip to both the
northern and the southern islands. The southern islands are
car-free which makes this the perfect destination for long walks
and bike rides and you get there by ferry from the boat terminal

Carnegie bought an old mill and sugar cane factory

continued up until 1976. In the hay days around 1916
the brewery produced around 5.5 million litres of
porter. Both Carnegie Porter and Pripps are today
brewered by Carlsberg Sweden and are two of the

MARSTRAND ISLAND
Marstrand is a summer paradise with international sailing, sun,
bathing and lively night life, approximately a 50-minute drive
from Gothenburg. The island, surrounded by the North Sea,
sports the mighty, historical Carlsten’s fortress. It was origi-
nally intended to protect the coast, and became a prison. West

Cruise through the Gothenburg archipelago with the traditional

THE NORDIC WATERCOLOUR MUSEUM

The museum is an inspiring place where art, nature and people
come together. A stunning venue for art made purely with water,
pigments and paper. The Nordic Watercolour Museum opened
in the summer of 2000. It was designed by the Danish architects
Niels Bruun and Henrik Corfitsen, with an extension providing a
further 400 m2 completed in 2012. In 2010 the museum won the
title Swedish Museum of the Year. Since its opening, world-class
exhibitions have included works by Salvador Dali, Bill Viola, Lou-
ise Bourgeois and Swedish favourites like Elsa Beskow, Anders
Zorn and Lars Lerin. The museum also offers workshops for
schools and businesses, lectures and conferences. The artist
studios across the bay can be rented for a night or an extended
stay. The museum is certified by Swedish Welcome and received
the highest score, classed as an outstanding experience.
Restaurant Vatten Gourmet & Café
You can almost taste the salt on your tongue when the wa-
ves splash across the rocks. The restaurant tempts you with
contemporary cuisine created from the finest local produce. The
restaurant is certified by Taste of West Sweden and is found at
the Nordic Watercolour Museum.

Tjolöholm castle was built in
1898 –1904 and the architecture is
a mix of 14th century English style,
Art Noveau and innovative design
features. The premises include ne-
arly 30 buildings, several beautiful
gardens and widespread nature.
The peninsula has a rich flora and fauna and you can choose
from plenty of different walking routes through oak forests,
beach meadows, barren cliffs and stop at outlooks and beaches.
Guided tours of the castle is available and you can visit the property
all year round.

the central harbour, a three kilometre ‘Lane of Light’ guides
you through the city to stylish outdoor lighting displays, along
the main boulevard to Liseberg Amusement Park and its
famous Christmas market.
 ENJOY A SWEDISH CHRISTMAS
– THE GOTHENBURG WAY
Central Gothenburg is transformed into the
Christmas City from Mid-November, kicking off
with the opening of the traditional Christmas
market at Liseberg Amusement Park and the
illumination of white fairy lights along the
Lane of Light. By early December all of the
festive light installations in the city centre are
shining - bringing buildings, bridges and trees
to life. There’s also a graphic sound and light
show on the façades surrounding Götaplatsen.
Shops and boutiques along the Lane of
Light and adjoining shopping districts are
open every day of the week, decked out in their
Christmas finery. As well as the Christmas
market at Liseberg, there is an array of other
markets across the city and surrounding coun-
tryside. City restaurants get into the seasonal
spirit too from the end of November, serving a
mouth-watering julbord – a festive smorgasbord
– and being Gothenburg, it is often served with
a maritime twist
LISEBERG CHRISTMAS MARKET
Close to five million glimmering lights adorn
the 700 Christmas trees and buildings of
Scandinavia’s largest Christmas market in
Liseberg Amusement Park. There are 70
rustic market stalls and shops selling arts and
crafts, as well as festive foods – from the tra-
ditional Swedish marinated herring, roasted
reindeer meat served by Sami (indigenous
people from Lapland), to seasonal Swedish
goodies, such as marzipan pigs and glögg,
traditional mulled and spiced wine. One of the
new features is the Traditional Christmas,
inspired by the time around 1930s–1940s.

Enjoy markets, choirs and buy your own
Christmas tree. Let the children celebrate
Christmas with the rabbits in the new Rabbit
Land. What’s more, there is an ice-skating
rink, a chance to meet Santa Claus and a
range of children’s rides. Visitors can even
see white reindeers from Sweden’s far north
and enjoy a sleigh ride in the park. Open from
Mid-November on weekends and daily from
throughout December.
THE LANE OF LIGHT
The Lane of Light leads the way to Christmas
– literally. Stretching from the central harbour
along the main boulevard Avenyn, to the glim-
mering magic of Liseberg, the Lane of Light
is 3 kilometres of festive magic. Combining
innovative lighting design with a love of Christ-
mas the old-fashioned way, the city architects
and light designers have created this year’s
Lane of Light around the theme of dreams. The
illuminations take place from early December
to early January.

Light show
Witness a spectacular visual display of colour
at Götaplatsen culture square, where a speci-
ally-produced graphic light and video show is
projected onto the façade of the Gothenburg
Museum of Art.

Christmas in Haga, the Old Quarter
The early 19th century paved streets of Haga,
lend a distinctive charm to its Christmas mar-
ket. Outdoor market stalls sell home-made
and locally-produced wares, compete with the
trendy as well as vintage boutiques that line
the main street Haga Nygatan. The many cafés
provide the perfect pit-stop for coffee and
typical Christmas pepparkakor (ginger snaps)
and lussebullar (buns spiced with saffron).
Open on Saturday-Sundays from late Novem-
ber until 21st of December (Saturdays 10–16,
Sundays 11–16).
Christmas at Gunnebo House
and Gardens
A Christmas market with handicraft stalls
and organic cuisine is held in the beautiful
surroundings of Gunnebo House and Gardens,
a 19th century estate just south of the city.
Traditional Christmas market at the
Old City Hall
Dating from the 1600s, the Old City Hall
(Kronhuset) building is a genuine step back in
time and its Christmas market captures this
theme. The inside of the building is packed
with traditional Swedish handicraft stalls, sold
by artisans dressed in old-fashioned costu-
mes. The old chocolate works next door has
its finest Christmas confectionary on display.
Outside, old-style hot dogs and Swedish glögg
are on offer.
Christmas at Röda Sten Art Centre
The former boiler house at the entrance of
the harbour will house a Christmas market in
their large and spectacular exhibition room
The Cathedral. The Christmas market offers
unique pieces of art and crafts.
Christmas at Nordstan Shopping Centre
Some 40 festive stalls offering high-quality tra-
ditional and contemporary handicrafts that have
been made in Sweden, add to the Christmas
buzz inside Nordstan shopping centre. Meet
the craftsmen in person at the stalls. Set by the
Lane of Light and open from Mid-November
until 30th of December.

Christmas market at Bruket
In characterful surroundings, the Christmas
market at Bruket, Kvarnbyn, is held in the
beginning of December. Some 40 selected
creators within interior design, accessories,
jewellery, photo, ceramics and children’s
clothing will participate in the market located
at Götaforsliden 17, Mölndal.
Christmas market at HDK - School of
Design and Crafts
The tradition continues. Students in design
and crafts sell their art works and products.
At HDK Christmas market at Kristinelundsga-
tan 6–8 you will find the unique gifts.
  The Art Library at HDK becomes a crowded
place when students in design and crafts sell
jewellery, ceramics, textiles, posters, cards,
bags and much more.

OTHER EVENTS
Boat trip to Liseberg
For a truly unique way to get to Liseberg, and
as long as the canal isn’t frozen over, it is
possible to take a boat. Paddan canal boats
cruise along the city canals, passing the lock
at Drottningtorget and on to Liseberg. Blan-
kets, candles and glögg keep you warm along
the way. Tours last up to 30 minutes and run
Thursday to Sunday Nov–Dec.
Vintage trams to Liseberg
Ringlinien vintage trams transport visitors
from Drottningtorget to Liseberg Amusement
Park. Step back in time on board these well-
kept, beautiful old trams. Saturdays from Mid-
November until late December.
New Year’s Eve firework display
Gothenburg’s daily newspaper GP invites eve-
ryone to witness the traditional New Year’s
Eve firework display at the central harbour at
5pm. Most spectators gather along the quays
by the opera house to see the colourful show.

GOTHENBURG’S LUCIA
The Lucia tradition is a key event in the Swedish
Christmas calendar. Every year, the city of
Gothenburg chooses its Lucia, Queen of Light,
and the traditional Lucia concerts take place
in the hushed candlelit atmosphere of Vasa
Church. You can buy ticets at the tourist office.
Choral pieces from the Lucia troupe bring a slice
of divine enchantment to the packed church.
Several other churches also hold Lucia and
Christmas concerts.
