Indigenous persecution
TheConquest of the DesertwasamilitarycampaigndirectedmainlybyGeneralJulio
ArgentinoRocainthe1870swiththeintenttoestablishArgentinedominance
overPatagonia,whichwasinhabitedbyindigenouspeople.UnderGeneralRoca,the
ConquestoftheDesertextendedArgentinepowerintoPatagoniaandendedthe
possibilityofChileanexpansionthere.
ArgentinetroopskilledmorethanathousandIndiansanddisplacedover15,000more
fromtheirtraditionallands.EthnicEuropeansettlersdevelopedthelandsforagriculture,
turningitintoabreadbasketthatmadeArgentinaanagriculturalsuperpowerintheearly
20thcentury.TheArgentiniangovernmentremovedtheimagesofRocaandhissoldiers
becausetheyconsideredthecampaignwasagenocide.

Introduction
ThefrontierdividingthecolonialfarmsandtheIndianterritoriesgradually
movedoutwardsfromBuenosAires;attheendofthe18thcentury,theSalado
Riverwastheboundarybetweenthecivilizations.ManyIndianswereforcedto
abandontheirtribestoworkonthefarms.Someassimilatedorintermarried
withthewhitepopulation.Thegroupknownasgauchosdevelopedfrom
workingontheranches.
AfterArgentinaachievedindependencein1816,theprovinceshadnumerous
conflictsastheystruggledoverhowtoorganize.Oncetheseweresettled,the
governmentwantedtoquicklyoccupythelandsclaimedbytheyoungrepublic
(inparttopreventChilefromencroachingonit).Italsowantedtoincreasethe
nationalagriculturalproductionandoffernewlandstoprospectiveimmigrants.

Background
RocafollowedNicolsAvellanedaaspresident.Hethoughtitwas
imperativetoconquertheterritorysouthoftheNegroRiverassoon
aspossible,andorderedthe1881campaignunderthecontrolof
ColonelConradoVillegas.
WithinayearVillegasconqueredtheNeuqunProvince(hereached
theLimayRiver).ThecampaigncontinuedtopushtheIndian
resistancefurthersouth,tofightthelastbattleonOctober18,1884.
Thelastrebelgroupofover3,000membersunderthecommandof
chieftainsInacayalandFoyelsurrenderedtwomonthslaterin
presentChubutProvince.

The final campaign


HistorianJensAndermannhasnotedthatcontemporarysourcesonthe
campaignindicatethattheConquestwasintendedby
theArgentinegovernmenttoexterminatetheindigenoustribes,anexampleof
genocide.First-handaccountsstatedthatArgentinetroopskilledprisonersand
committed"massexecutions".The15,000Indianstakencaptive"became
servantsorprisonersandwerepreventedfromhavingchildren."
Apologistsperceivethecampaignasintendingtoconquerspecificallythose
groupsofIndiansthatrefusedtosubmittoArgentinelawandfrequentlycarried
outbrutalattacksonfrontierciviliansettlements.Intheseattacks,Indiansstole
manyhorsesandcattle,killedmendefendingtheirlivestock,andcaptured
womenandchildrentobecometheslavesand/orforcedbridesofIndian
warriors.
