Experiment No. 8 Double Effect Evaporator
Experiment No. 8 Double Effect Evaporator
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. To be able to operate the Swenson double-effect evaporator
2. To be able to examine the evaporator and determine the functions of all transfer
lines.
II. THEORY:
IV. PROCEDURE:
First, we gathered, prepared and cleaned all the materials and apparatus needed in
the experiment. Then, we examined the evaporator and its parts and identified the
functions of all the transfer lines. We filled the first effect to the center of the middle
observation port and began heating this effect. When the water reached 170o F in the first
effect, we introduced the feed water to this effect and the overflow hot water into the
second effect. We turned on the steam jet to produce a vacuum in the second effect.
The feed steam pressure was fixed and was read on the gauge after the reducing
regulator. We observed the effect of varying operating conditions on heat transfer and
evaporator performance (capacity, steam economy). In this experiment, we chose to
investigate the feed rate and the vacuum level. We determined the precision of our
measurements and the reproducibility of our runs by making repeat measurements and
performing repeat runs.
