ABriefHistoryoftheTarot

TheTarotcardsareadeckofplayingcardsthatwefirstreadaboutinthelatemiddleageswhenitwas
usedforplayingthegame'Tarocchi'inItalyandotherMediterraneancountries.Itisbelievedtohave
arrivedfromtheEastandsomebelievetheywerederivedfromtheTurkishmamlukplayingcards,which
inturnarethoughttohavearrivedintheMiddleEastfromChina.

Basically,theTarotcardsareadeckofplayingcardswithoneextracourtcard(thePage)ineachsuit
andtheadditionof22MajorArcanacards,or'trumps'.Thetrumpscontainsarchetypalimagesthat
impartmorallessons.Thestructurehasfluctuatedregionallyandthereisstillasetinprintwhich
contains30'Trionfi',i.e.theMinchiateTarot.

Nobodyknowsexactlywhenthecardswerefirstusedfortellingfortunesbutthankstoearlybansfrom
thechurchagainstthisformofusage,weknowitwasquiteearlyon.

Inthe17thcentury,theuseofTarotcardsbecamewidespreadandpopularthanstotheinventionofthe
printingpress.Nowordinarypeoplehadaccesstocards,whereasinthelatemiddleagesandduring
therenaissance,cardgamesweretheprivilegeofonlytherichestoftherich.Thedeckthatspreadlike
wildfirethroughEuropewastheTarotdeMarseille.

However,itwasn'tuntilFrenchoccultistsinthe18thcenturystartedwritingabouttheTarotfroman
esotericpointofviewthatwehaveourfirstworksontheTarotasatoolfordivination.Twoofthefathers
ofdivinatoryTarotwereAntoineCourtdeGbelin andJeanBaptisteAlliette(Etteilla).However,their
claimsthattheTarotwasanancientEgyptiansystemfortellingfortunesdoesnotholduptoclose
examination.

ThefirstmassproduceddeckthatgainedwidespreadpopularityapartfromtheTarotdeMarseilles
wastheRiderWaitepack,illustratedbyPamelaColemanSmithandfirstpublishedin1910.Most
moderndaydecksareclonesofthisdeckandmostbooksthatteachtheTarotarebasedonthe
imageryofthisdeck.

A.E.WaiteandPamelaColemanSmithbothbelongedtotheOrderoftheGoldenDawn.Thisisa
WesternMysteryschoolwhichlivesontodayintraditionsthatteachKabbalisticandCeremonial
magick.Anotherin(famous)personfromtheGoldenDawnwhowentontocreatehisownTarot
deckisAleisterCrowley,whotogetherwithLadyFriedaHarrisgiftedtheworldwiththestunningly
beautifulThothTarot.

Forthepurposeofthiscourse,wewillstickwiththestructureofthemostpopularofthesethree,
sothatintheMajorArcanaStrengthisnumbered8Justiceisnumbered11.Tome,thisseems
logical,sincethecorrespondingzodiacsignsthenfallintherightorder.

ElementalCorrespondences

It'sOKifyouskimmedthroughthehistorypart.Youmaynotbeanoviceandifyouhavemore
thanonebookontheTarot,youwillhavereadvarioussimilaraccountsalready.However,
whetherornotyouarenewtotheTarot,youcannotaffordtoskimthisnextpartitmakesup
thefoundationforthiswholecourse,sopleasepaycloseattention.

Ideally,youshouldcommitthisstructuretomusclememorybeforethenextlesson.Trustme,it

TheElementalAngelsandtheMinorArcana

TheAngelicTarotReaderwhouseshergiftsinservicetohumanityandwhohasfullyembodiedthe

arealsothefourquarterpointsfromwhichtheElementsarecalledduringmagickalworkings.Thefour

AnintuitivewayofgettingtoknowtheElementsistoapproacheachElementfromwithinacirclewhich
youmarkwitharope,candles,pinecones,crystalsorcreatewiththelightofyourmind.Forthepurpose
ofgettingtoknowtheTarot,IsuggestplacingtheAceofeachofthefoursuitsinthecorresponding
cardinalquarter.

Startbytakingafewdeepbreathstocentreyourselfandbecomefullypresentinyourbody.Takeastep
towardtheeasternquarterandtrytosensetheelementAirwithallyourbeing.Justobservewhatcomes
toyoudontconjureanything.Onceyoustartreceivingimpressionsofcolour,temperature,touchetc,
seeifyoucantranslatetheseintomovementthatexpressesthequalityoftheelementAir.

Onceyouvecompletedyourmagickalmovementsequence,commitittomemoryandandperformit
withtheintenttoinvokeangelicprotectionfromthecorrespondingArchangel.Dothismindfullyandpay
attentiontoanyshiftintheatmosphereasyounameandinvoketheangel.Thenstepbackintothe
middleofthecircle.TurningclockwisetotheSouth,repeattheprocess,stepforwardandseewhatyou
cansense/expressfortheFireelement...

Bytheendofthisexerciseyouwillhavefourmagickalmovementswhichwillhelpyoubalancethe
Elements.Thesefourmovementscanbeusedtoinvokeangelicprotectionwhencastingyourcircle
beforeanyAngelicTarotspellworkordoingindepthdivinatorywork.

itself...Evenmoresoifyouchargethemwithyourpersonalpower.Youbecomeadirectchannelfor

onlygetsofarwithheadknowledgeandyourangelswishtohelpyougetfurtherwhenyou
dedicateyourdivinationworktotheLight.

ThefirstthingyoumustdothenistocreatealinkwithyourGuardianAngelandyes,you
