Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Classification

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9-12

Content Standard Addressed: Georgia Standards of Excellence

SB4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the organization of interacting systems
within single-celled and multi-celled organisms.

a. Construct an argument supported by scientific information to explain patterns in structures

and function among clades of organisms, including the origin of eukaryotes by
endosymbiosis. Clades should include:
archaea
bacteria
eukaryotes
fungi
plants
animals
b. Analyze and interpret data to develop models (i.e., cladograms and phylogenetic trees) based
on patterns of common ancestry and the theory of evolution to determine relationships
among major groups of organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Standards for Students

3. Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

3a Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for
their intellectual or creative pursuits.
3c Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create
collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
3d Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
Students will be placed in five groups consisting of four to six students. Each group will be assigned a
Kingdom (Monera, Plantae, Protista, Fungi, and Animalia) and will create a Popplet that bre aks that Kingdom
down into the Phyla that make up that Kingdom. The groups will then break down one Phylum into the
Classes that make up that Phylum. The students will provide characteristics and examples of organisms found
in the chosen Class of organisms. Students will be given one whole class period to create their Popplet and
will be turned in to be presented to the class for the next day.
This assignment will be introduced at the beginning of the unit of classification of organisms. Students will
research their individual Kingdom, Phyla, and Classes and Popplets will be posted on the classroom blog for all
students to see. The teacher will present each groups Popplet during class and will then proceed to provide
direct instruction to students on the classification of organisms. Each groups Popplet will be graded based on
organization, presentation, and correctness of the content. The teacher will provide feedback to direct
student learning, but will not be too harsh as this project is at the beginning of the unit before the students
have directly learned content. The project will conclude when all student Popplets are presented and the unit
begins.
