WELCOME
TO THIS YEARS TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL!

Big changes have come to our country since we

gathered on these beautiful shores last sum-
mer, but there is still one thing you can count
on: a week of great films that remind us not only
of our common humanity, but of the power we
each hold within us to shape our world and our
future for the better.
The movies Ive selected this year are bold,
brave, larger-than-life stories that made me
laugh, and sometimes cry, but always left me
with a sense of hope and wonder. I believe that cinema is a unifying artform, a
collective experience that brings us together, and we need that now more than
ever. From the Travel Ban Sidebar, featuring seven daring and beautiful stories
that celebrate our connected world, to comedies from all over the globe that
reframe the way we look at our shared experience of life, these are great mov-
ies, and they are meant to be seen on the big screen.
This year, we are introducing two new (temporary) big screens: Kirkbride Hall
at the Grand Traverse Commons and the newly renovated auditorium in
Central High Schooltransformed into cinemas by the same technical
geniuses who remade the State Theatre, City Opera House, Old Town Play-
house, Con Foster Museum, and our other venerable venues into world-class
movie theaters.
I know that you will emerge from these cool, dark theaters exhilarated by what
you have seen and as passionate as I am about what you want to
make happen in the world. Embrace the power
of film and the power of community, and have a
magical week sharing great movies.

Yours,
Great

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS
2015 | USA | PG-13 | 136 min.
Directed by J.J. Abrams
Star Wars is the epitome of movie magic. Episode VII sent the world into a collective
state of fevered anticipation, uniting us across generations, borders, and walks of life.
It took us back home to our dear friends and introduced us to new ones with whom
we immediately fell in love. It made a general out of a princess, and made us forget all
about Jar Jar Binks. It brought us the engineering marvel that is the adorable robot
named BB-8. And it was, however impossible it seems, as thrilling, euphoric, beau-
tiful, and brilliant as we all hoped it would be. Yes, were showing the seventh epi-
sode in George Lucas epic space saga, Star Wars, on Saturday night. Darn right we
are. Just five months and counting till Episode VIII, and the Force is strong with the

CLOSING NIGHT
DETROIT
2017 | USA | R | 120 min.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow
On the night of July 25, 1967, amidst the bloody turmoil of the Detroit uprising, a group of young
men and women decided to duck into the Algiers Motel for the night in hopes of staying out of
trouble. When their night of partying and playing around led to one of them jokingly firing a starter
pistol, trouble came blasting through the windows and doors in the form of local and state police
and National Guardsmen, all looking for a sniper. A horrifying and brutal chain of events followed,
including several beatings and the death of three black teenagers. Piecing together the unbelievable
but all-true events of that evening and its aftermath, Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark
Thirty, The Hurt Locker) proves yet again that she is one of the greatest directors working today,
delivering another riveting powerhouse of a film that still resonates strongly 50 years after the
incident. Detroits tour de force cast includes Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski, and John Boyega as
a security guard desperate to defuse the situation. Dont miss the film that will no doubt be the most
talked about at the festival.

create the technology for it. But necessity is the mother of invention, and its truly necessary to in-
form the world about the ongoing oceanic catastrophe thats killing the phosphorescent splendor of
the reefs and leaving rock formation corpses. Orlowskis previous film, the Academy Award-nomi-

global danger of our disappearing coral reefs has far less public awareness attached to it right now,
this Audience Award winner at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival proves, in spectacular fashion, that
the reefs are just as important, tragic, and deserving of our attention.

Can those who make their living o the land recalibrate their work to conserve that very same land?
In this insightful documentary, divided into three segments revolving around the titular occupations,
cameras follow five workers striving to live sustainably o farmland, ranches, and the sea. Narrated
by Tom Brokaw and directed by Oscar nominee Susan Froemke and Emmy winner John Homan,
this beautifully shot film captures the breathtaking vistas of American geography, and challenges the
perception that environmentalism and capitalism are hopelessly opposed. Thought-provoking and
evocative, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman sheds a hopeful light on the intelligent solutions that are
available for our most pressing environmental issues, if only we are willing to transcend politics and
protect our precious natural resources. In Person: Director Susan Froemke

TRUE CONVICTION
2017 | USA | NR | 84 min.
Directed by Jamie Meltzer
Real-life crime isnt entertainment for Christopher Scott and his
colleagues. After spending over 60 years between them incar-
cerated in jail for crimes they did not commit, three exonerated
men formed a detective agency in Dallas, Texas, in the hopes
of bringing justice to other innocent people serving time. The
agency does its best to find wrongfully convicted inmates and
return them to their lives outside, but as the story unfolds, we
see just how dicult that turns out to be. The three men have
developed methods for finding the right people to help, but the
more time passes, the harder it is to uncover evidence. Investi-
gations are time-consuming and frustrating. And once the men
are released, they often get in trouble and return to prison
something that happened to one of the partners in the agency,
too. Director Jamie Meltzer has created a fascinating portrait of
freedom fighters who are doing their best to use lessons learned
the hard way to aect real systemic change.

2009 | France | NR | 113 min.
Directed by Christian Carion
This cold-war thriller feels timelier with every passing day. Farewell is the true story of a tired,
disillusioned Soviet colonel who leaked KGB secrets to the west in early 1980s Moscow. He believed
that his funneled secrets could start a new revolution, and based on Ronald Reagans description of
the events as one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century, he might have had
due cause for that belief. Director Christian Carion grounds the story in the real world rather than
indulging in breakneck Jason Bourne type escapesthe colonel is annoyed when the French send an

task of betraying his country for the sake of the greater good begins to take its toll, this satisfyingly
sober thriller becomes as morally complex as a John Le Carr novel. In French, German with subtitles

Stately and vulgar. Tender and vicious. Beautiful and grotesque. Its not surprising that a story about

Wit and big words take center stage in this irreverent and profane mystery-comedy set against the

plenty of tongue-in-cheek gags, and a dash of slapstick, before it culminates in a semi-sendup of

This slyly witty, and lightly kinky, crowd-pleaser traces

was not always one of those liberal socialist utopias
Scandinavia seems to specialize in. As LGBT rights go, it
was as repressive as everywhere else in the 1950s. One
gay mans rebellion took the form of art: his aggres-

the stereotype of homosexuals as feminine by going as
far as he could in the opposite direction. In this tour de

Kicking things o with a bar mitzvah that results in minor disaster, The Womens Balcony takes
viewers inside a religious community headed toward progress despite protests from those at the top.
With its rare combination of light comedy and keen observation, The Womens Balcony oers an
enlightening look at modern-day Jewish culture in Jerusalem and the gender divisions that perme-
ate the temple. Its tricky to make a great film concerning faith that doesnt alienate those on the
outside, but first-time film director Emil Ben-Shimon is able to accomplish this with debut screen-
writer Shlomit Nehamas tightly plotted script. Its a familiar tale loaded with the kind of pitch-perfect
performances and elegant direction that make for a very enjoyable time at the movies. In Hebrew

THE YOUNG KARL MARX

2017 | Germany, France, Belgium | NR | 118 min.
Directed by Raoul Peck
Few, if any, other thinkers have impacted modern society as much as Karl Marx, and in this incandes-
cent biopic, the brilliant philosopher is brought to vivid and dramatic life. A fascinating tale of Marxs
intellectual awakening, The Young Karl Marx deftly charts his dramatic rise from a struggling family
man and hopeless romantic to one of the most influential minds in human history. Sparring with
fellow philosophers and oppressive government leaders over issues ranging from child labor and
assembly-line factories to injustices caused by capitalism and class systems, Marx is a firebrand ready
to bring revolution. Whether you love or loathe Marxism, this timely film, directed by Raoul Peck
(I Am Not Your Negro, also playing at this years festival), sheds new light on the flesh-and-blood
figure whose groundbreaking ideas forever changed history. In English, French, German with subtitles

500 YEARS
2017 | Guatemala | NR | 105 min.
Directed by Pamela Yates
How could genocide occur in a country without its citizens ever knowing? In this sweeping docu-
mentary, filmmaker Pamela Yates gives a powerful new voice to the previously silenced Mayan peo-
ple of Guatemala, who suered the slaughter of entire villages in the 1980s under former president
Rios Montt. The murders committed by Montt and his army, backed by the Reagan administration,
went mostly unnoticed by the Mayans fellow countrymen, many of whom still do not believe a
genocide ever occurred. Yates juxtaposes moving interviews with Mayan survivors and footage of
Montts 2013 trial, which culminated in a fierce citizen uprising that flooded the streets of Guatemala
with protestors demanding long-overdue justice. 500 Years is an important and inspiring film that
bears witness to the stories and strength of Guatemalas indigenous people. In Spanish with subtitles

ADA FOR MAYOR

2016 | Spain | NR | 88 min.
Directed by Pau Faus
Imagine Occupy Wall Street rising in Spain, and youll get a sense of the public movement that pro-
pelled unlikely folk hero Ada Colau from street raconteur to Barcelonas first female mayor in 2015.
Along for the whirlwind ride was director Pau Faus, who had an exclusive front-row seat to docu-
ment Colaus journey from a housing rights activist repeatedly arrested for disruptive protesting,
to an unlikely seat of political power in the course of a few short years. Through a combination of
first-person video confessionals and up-close coverage of Colaus public campaign appearances, Faus
focuses an intimate lens on Colaus initial self-doubt and discomfort with being in the public eye, and
the eventual aplomb with which she took oce. Ada for Mayor is a rousing tribute to the power of
everyday activists and the ability of one individual to change the system from within by speaking out
in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. In Catalan, Spanish with subtitles

ALL GOVERNMENTS LIE:

TRUTH, DECEPTION, AND THE SPIRIT OF I.F. STONE
2016 | Canada | NR | 91 min.
Directed by Fred Peabody
Independent journalist I.F. Stone built a legacy uncovering the deception of the powers that be,
inspiring generations of maverick journalists to do the same. Using archival footage and new inter-
views, this sobering documentary is less a portrait of the legendary news figure than it is a critique of
the mainstream media and a call to arms for the necessarily adversarial relationship of journalists to
government, particularly in times of crisis and war. Stones work through the latter half of the 20th
century is portrayed as hugely influential and, in the context of the chaos of the 2016 presidential
election, as the type of reporting needed now more than ever. Writers like John Carlos Frey, Matt
Taibbi, Glenn Greenwald, Amy Goodman, and others are presented as following in Stones footsteps,
which are traced backwards to McCarthyism and through the Vietnam and Iraq Wars. This debut
documentary from TV news veteran Fred Peabody, which also features a talking head appearance
from our own Michael Moore, is an invigorating reminder about the vital importance of calling out
the powerful, and giving voice to the powerless.

CAUSE OF DEATH: UNKNOWN

2017 | Norway | NR | 85 min.
Directed by Anniken Hoel
When Norwegian director Anniken Hoels mentally ill but otherwise healthy sister died suddenly of
a cardiac episode, she suspected that doctor-prescribed antipsychotic medications were at the root
of her death. What she didnt know was how many similar deaths have happened: as it turns out, tens
of thousands of them. Hoels sister had been prescribed multiple medications, all with dangerous side
eects. Why was no one informed? As Hoel investigates, she discovers that many prescribing phy-
sicians have no knowledge of the potentially deadly side eects. Treading carefully, she explores the
way marketing masterminds at pharmaceutical companies control this information in the name of
profit, and ignore or downplay the medications adverse eectsnot to mention a broader implica-
tion of misdiagnoses of mental illnesses. In her debut film, Hoels investigation takes her around the
world, where she interviews doctors, scientists, patients, and more to uncover the reasons why profit
is valued over the well being of patients. In English, Norwegian with subtitles

THE CHOCOLATE CASE

2016 | Netherlands | NR | 90 min.
Directed by Benthe Forrer
If you consider yourself a hopeless chocoholic, this eye-opening, funny yet sobering documentary
might just change your buying habits. After first exposing the cocoa industrys reliance on child
slavery in 2003, a group of Dutch journalists set out on a decade-long campaign to combat the
mega-industry. Because suing a major corporation is just about impossible, they took a decidedly
rebellious approach and tried to get one of their unmarried members prosecuted for knowingly pur-
chasing goods produced through child labor and slavery. Their goal was to set a legal precedent that
would impact future chocolate sales, making it illegal to buy anything but slave-free chocolate. With
a large dose of humor and unrelenting perseverance, the journalists also endeavored to create the
worlds first slave-free chocolate bar. This was much more dicult than they ever imagined, though
the product eventually became one of the top-selling brands in the Netherlands. The Chocolate
Case fascinatingly documents the journalists journey to right a global wrong; fighting injustice
within billion-dollar industries isnt easy, something this rousing film makes clearbut its also not
impossible. A must see at this years festival. In Dutch, English, French, German with subtitles

FIRE AT SEA
2016 | Italy, France | NR | 114 min.
Directed by Gianfranco Rosi
As controversy over immigration rages around the globe, its human consequences are the ones
most often overshadowed or overlooked. This Oscar-nominated, Berlin Film Festival award winner
focuses its gaze squarely on the cost to men, women, and children, and its images will stay with you
long after the credits roll. The small Sicilian island of Lapedusa has become a primary European entry
point for tens of thousands of refugees fleeing famine and civil unrest in North Africa and the Middle
East. For these desperate people, the perilous journey across the Mediterranean serves as the
path to either a new life or a painful death. This stunning and heart-wrenching documentary from
director Gianfranco Rosi illuminates the human faces behind the headlines. Rosi spent months on
the island, and his intimate camerawork provides a raw, unflinching glimpse into the daily collective
struggles of both the locals and the immigrants. The cumulative eect of these startling images has
an unforgettable emotional impact on the viewer and may just change the way you think about the
world. In French, Italian with subtitles

PECKING ORDER
2017 | New Zealand | NR | 88 min.
Directed by Slavko Martinov
This highly-entertaining, aectionate crowdpleaser is Best in Show-meets-political-thrillers by way
of Leelanau County. Fowl plays afoot at the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam, and Pigeon Club. The
much-maligned pigeon fanciers may be mounting a coup; the leadership style of elderly chairman
Doug Bain has rued a few feathers, and passions are inflamed. Slavko Martinov (TCFF Stanley
Kubrick Award Winner, Propaganda) allows his subjects sunny-sided demeanors to shine, never
undercutting any participants dignity. And the chickens are indisputably cute, happily being soaped
in kitchen sinks and blown dry by hand. Martinov frames his film as a classic countdown-to-the-big-
National-Show, and its hard not to get caught up in all the tension and trappings, especially when
the top six receive a bagpipe serenade, carrying their fowl (and one large Pekin Duck) to the final
judging area. This masterful celebration of passion, obsession, and humanitys capacity for com-
petitiveness is less about the birds and more about the memorable characters, from the irascible,
KFC-munching chairman to the by-the-book judge, who is that way mainly because, as he tells us
more than once, he literally wrote the book. One of this years dont miss films.

A RIVER BELOW
2017 | Colombia, USA | NR | 86 min.
Directed by Mark Grieco
This isnt another sad doc about mankinds wanton destruction of an endangered species. Rather, its
an exploration of the good and bad of modern media activism, told through the story of the Amazon
pink river dolphin. And its provocative to the extreme, refusing to back away from the painful, knot-
ty mess that arises from media crusades. When it comes to activism, theres almost nothing more
powerful than an unforgettable image with its capacity to inspire and transform. Richard Rasmussen,
well-known host of a popular NatGeo wildlife show, knows this well. Hes the Steve Irwin of Brazil,
using in-the-wild confrontations with deadly creatures to call attention to conservation eorts.
When he determines to do something about the siege on dolphins in Brazil and Colombia, he con-
vinces a group of villagers to allow him to film them illegally killing a pregnant dolpin, which they chop
up and use to catch lucrative piracatinga scavenger fish. After the footage airs on a popular Sunday
night TV program, it immediately leads to a temporary ban on national piracatinga fishing. Rasmus-
sens video is an extreme means of upending the status quo. The fishermen accused him of sabotag-
ing their livelihoods and safety, while he pointed to the positive outcome. Mark Grieco oers no easy
answers in this fascinating doc about saving the planet. In English, Portuguese, Spanish with subtitles

RUMBLE: THE INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD

2017 | Canada | NR | 103 min.
Directed by Catherine Bainbridge
Winner of more festival awards than you can shake a stick at, this unique and insightful twist on the
classic rock and roll documentary explores the legendary musicians of Native American descent who
have dramatically influenced popular music throughout the 20th century, nearly undetected. Divided
into 10 separate portraits, the film leads o with a focus on astonishing guitarist Fred Lincoln Link
Wray, Jr., and his influential, fuzzed-out and swaggering instrumental single Rumble. Director
Catherine Bainbridge (Reel Injun, TCFF 2010) deftly traces the incredible contributions of Native
artists from Charley Patton, known as the Father of the Delta Blues, to Jimi Hendrix (who was
part Cherokee), and The Bands Robbie Robertson. A litany of music and film greats are interviewed,

BEATS OF THE ANTONOV

2014 | Sudan, South Africa | NR | 68 min.
Directed by Hajooj Kuka
This dynamic, emotional, even jubilant debut documentary proves that the human need for music
prevails even in the throes of war. Returning to his homeland, Sudanese filmmaker Hajooj Kuka
spent two years capturing the vibrant music and rituals that unify refugees in the Blue Nile and
Nuba Mountain regions through a shared heritage. Despite living each day in fear of bombings and
the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by North Sudans government, Kuka captures farmers and herders
expressing happiness and joy through laughter, songs signalling the conclusion of raids, and ceremo-
nial dances. This Toronto International Film Festival Audience Award winner seeks to preserve and
celebrate a musical tradition and cultural identity threatened with annihilation, and reminds us that
the optimism and resilient spirit that beats in the hearts of a courageous people cannot be squashed.

his cut of the ransom? An award winner at Sundance, this gripping docudrama plays like Captain

The rising voices of post-revolution Libya created this remarkable anthology of 13 separate stories
filmed over the course of three years and depicting the day-to-day world of Libyan citizens from

true slice of life. Theres plenty we dont know about what its like to be a Libyan citizen. These stories

the backlash, Farhadi won the Best Foreign Language

domestic thriller with masterful Hitchcockian suspense

Death of a Salesman when a violent assault upends

more motivated than he realizes by his portrayal of

1992 | USA | R | 99 min.
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Cinema giant Quentin Tarantinos debut film about a heist gone wrong still feels as fresh and invig-
orating as it did when it premiered 25 years ago. A crew of bandits on the run from police gather in
a warehouse in Los Angeles and attempt to suss out which of them is actually an undercover cop.
The tense action and expertly-crafted dialogue is delivered masterfully by one of the greatest casts
of actors ever assembled, including Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, and
Tarantino himself. Not for the faint of heart, the films gloriously bloody sequences (which reportedly
caused even Wes Craven to duck out when the film was on the festival circuit in 1992) provided not
only the blueprint for Tarantinos future films, but also served to inspire a generation of filmmakers.
Whether you listen to Super Sounds of the Seventies on the reg or are new to this influential crime
drama, dont miss a chance to experience this explosive and groundbreaking thriller on the big screen.

Revolting Rhymes, a collection of poems that retold the classic stories of Snow White, Red Riding
Hood, and other favorites with delightfully strange endings. This computer-animated adaptation
of Dahls poems, narrated by Dominic West, reminds us why Dahl is such an enduring presence in
childrens literature. Dazzling visuals bring the authors goofy yet graceful prose to imaginative life, a
perfect pairing that is fiendishly fun. This charming film makes adults chuckle and captivates children.
