CLOSING NIGHT
DETROIT
2017 | USA | R | 120 min.
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow
On the night of July 25, 1967, amidst the bloody turmoil of the Detroit uprising, a group of young
men and women decided to duck into the Algiers Motel for the night in hopes of staying out of
trouble. When their night of partying and playing around led to one of them jokingly firing a starter
pistol, trouble came blasting through the windows and doors in the form of local and state police
and National Guardsmen, all looking for a sniper. A horrifying and brutal chain of events followed,
including several beatings and the death of three black teenagers. Piecing together the unbelievable
but all-true events of that evening and its aftermath, Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark
Thirty, The Hurt Locker) proves yet again that she is one of the greatest directors working today,
delivering another riveting powerhouse of a film that still resonates strongly 50 years after the
incident. Detroits tour de force cast includes Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski, and John Boyega as
a security guard desperate to defuse the situation. Dont miss the film that will no doubt be the most
talked about at the festival.

2016 | USA | NR | 104 min.
Directed by Vikram Gandhi
Before he was Barack, he was Barryan intelligent, handsome, charismatic bit of a square, who
struggled with questions of identity, purpose, and belonging. Its hard to imagine a time when the
coolest commander-in-chief on record wasnt quite as cool, but this stellar biopic about the future
44th presidents college years at Columbia University in New York reconstructs how the biracial
brainiac stepped outside his comfort zone to explore black culture while also navigating relationships
with his white girlfriend (Anya Taylor-Joy) and mother (Ashley Judd). Dancing to the B-52s, reading
Invisible Man, shooting hoops, and debating democracy via the ancient Greeks, the man we know
now didnt yet existbut the future was calling. Led by Devon Terrells winsome lead performance,
director Vikram Gandhis poignant charmer may reveal the events and relationships that shaped the
man who would become the leader of the free world, but it also stands on its own as a tender and
true coming-of-age story that doesnt need a presidential pedigree to be profoundly impactful.

Mooney), whose life is built around his favorite show, Brigsby Bear Adventures. When James is
forced from his isolated home and out into society, he learns that Brigsby Bear wasnt a real show.
To cope with the stress caused by this revelation, James resolves to complete the final episodes of
the show himself, with a little help from some newfound friends. If none of this makes any sense to

GOOK
2017 | USA | NR | 94 min.
Directed by Justin Chon
As America recognizes the 25th anniversary of the LA riots, revisit that moment in history from
a perspective youve never seen before. In writer/director/star Justin Chons sophomore feature,
the friendship between two Korean-American brothers and an 11-year-old African-American girl
is tested when theyre trapped in the brothers struggling South Central shoe store while the riots
erupt around them. As the barbed title implies, Chon isnt afraid to tackle prejudice head-on, but he
does so with remarkably endearing good humorthis is a film that makes its social justice underpin-
nings known, but also makes time for a little karaoke to Hall & Oates. Winner of the NEXT Audience
Award at Sundance, Chons starkly beautiful black-and-white imagery draws from his childhood
memories, and the result is a stunning portrait that mixes the in-your-face sensibilities of early Spike
Lee with the slacker charm of Kevin Smith. It marks the arrival of a bold new voice in American cine-
ma, and its truly something to see. Scheduled to Appear: Director/Actor Justin Chon

INFINITY BABY
2017 | USA | NR | 80 min.
Directed by Bob Byington
Welcome to the near future, where you can become the proud parent of an Infinity Baby. These spe-
cial babies take the pressure o because they never cry, never age past three months, never leave
the nest or become teenagers, and they only need one feeding and one weekly diaper change. Kier-
an Culkin is Ben, a serial-dater working as a salesman for his uncle Neo, played by the incomparable
Nick Oerman. Their company peddles the 1,000 results of a botched genetic experiment to trendy
couples who want the pleasures of parenthood without all the annoying side eects. Commitment
issues abound in this wry, sardonic, absurd, over the top, sci-fi satire from indie legend and TCFF
favorite Bob Byington, in his best o-kilter, idiosyncratic film yet. With the comedic talents of Kevin
Corrigan, Martin Starr, Stephen Root, Nol Wells, and Megan Mullally as Bens hyper-critical mother,

her high school sister Ali (Abby Quinn) as they bicker, dance, and navigate the many vices of young
lifefrom dabbling in drugs, to clubbing, to cheating on long-term significant others. Slate and
Quinn shine as endearing but lost young women who dont quite have a handle on where their lives

further depth to an inspired script. Revel in all the 90s pop culture gloryno smart phones to be

ex calls with the news that their once-shared cat is ill, it doesnt take much for Emily to hop on the

Who could have guessed that the next hip hop movie to have all the buzz would be about a 23-year-
old, overweight working-class girl from New Jersey? But thats the magic of Patricia Dombrowski,
a.k.a. Patti Cake$, for you. Her fierce talent is as unexpected as it is undeniable, and shes not gonna

hip hop stardom. Along with a pair of unlikely collaboratorsan Indian pharmacist/hype man and a

WAR MACHINE
2017 | USA | R | 122 min.
Directed by David Michd
In this blacker than black comedy, Brad Pitt gives an almost unrecognizable performance as Gen-
eral Glen McMahon, a bumbling, clean cut, megalomaniac Four-Star General, tasked with turning
things around in Afghanistan. And he really is in it to win it. He believes he can find the insurgents,
build the roads and schools, and bring home a W for the good old US of A. In this dogged pursuit,
he will not be curtailednot by a lack of equipment, not by a lack of plans, not even by a lack of US
involvement, a tale he will tell to anyone whos forced to listen. Inspired by a now infamous Rolling
Stone profile that led to General Stanley McCrystals fall from power, this swaggering satire dances
between sardonic wit and penetrating realismthink Kubricks Dr. Strangelove meets David O.

fascinating doc about scientists testing the limits of
rapidly-evolving AI technology. The engaging, brilliant
team at London-based intelligence think tank Deep-

charming world champion of the ancient Chinese board

CHASING CORAL
2017 | USA | NR | 93 min.
Directed by Je Orlowski
In the last 30 years, we have lost 50 percent of the worlds coralsthe psychedelically colored,
imaginatively shaped, majestic species living on our ocean floors that remain as mysterious as the
cosmos. So when filmmaker Je Orlowski sought to document the eects of climate change in de-
stroying and bleaching coral reefs, the process was so unprecedented that his team actually had to
create the technology for it. But necessity is the mother of invention, and its truly necessary to in-
form the world about the ongoing oceanic catastrophe thats killing the phosphorescent splendor of
the reefs and leaving rock formation corpses. Orlowskis previous film, the Academy Award-nomi-
nated Chasing Ice, powerfully and irrefutably captured the melting of the polar ice caps. While the
global danger of our disappearing coral reefs has far less public awareness attached to it right now,
this Audience Award winner at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival proves, in spectacular fashion, that
the reefs are just as important, tragic, and deserving of our attention.

It is not easy to follow the overwhelming tragedy going on right now in Syria. But if you only watch
one thing, make it this definitive Syria documentary about the citizen journalist group Raqqa is Being
Slaughtered Silently (RBSS). These brave Syrian journalists are capturing the everyday horror of
living under ISIS in the city of Raqqa through photos, videos, and written testimonies. They do so at
great personal risk to themselves and their families, and many have paid the ultimate price. Oscar
nominee Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) trains an unflinching eye on RBSS heroic actions and
the trauma its members experience as a result, whether they remain at home, or continue to face
persecution abroad from both ISIS loyalists and anti-refugee protestors. City of Ghosts reveals the
harsh truth of ISIS impact in the Middle East and the deadliness of daring to rise against them. This

TRUE CONVICTION
2017 | USA | NR | 84 min.
Directed by Jamie Meltzer
Real-life crime isnt entertainment for Christopher Scott and his
colleagues. After spending over 60 years between them incar-
cerated in jail for crimes they did not commit, three exonerated
men formed a detective agency in Dallas, Texas, in the hopes
of bringing justice to other innocent people serving time. The
agency does its best to find wrongfully convicted inmates and
return them to their lives outside, but as the story unfolds, we
see just how dicult that turns out to be. The three men have
developed methods for finding the right people to help, but the
more time passes, the harder it is to uncover evidence. Investi-
gations are time-consuming and frustrating. And once the men
are released, they often get in trouble and return to prison
something that happened to one of the partners in the agency,
too. Director Jamie Meltzer has created a fascinating portrait of
freedom fighters who are doing their best to use lessons learned
the hard way to aect real systemic change.

This cold-war thriller feels timelier with every passing day. Farewell is the true story of a tired,
disillusioned Soviet colonel who leaked KGB secrets to the west in early 1980s Moscow. He believed
that his funneled secrets could start a new revolution, and based on Ronald Reagans description of
the events as one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century, he might have had
due cause for that belief. Director Christian Carion grounds the story in the real world rather than
indulging in breakneck Jason Bourne type escapesthe colonel is annoyed when the French send an

task of betraying his country for the sake of the greater good begins to take its toll, this satisfyingly

Stately and vulgar. Tender and vicious. Beautiful and grotesque. Its not surprising that a story about
fluid identities, convoluted scheming, and double crosses could encompass such seemingly contra-
dictory tones and ideas, but it does so convincingly. Adapted from the 2002 Welsh novel Finger-
smith, this widely-acclaimed film resets the story in 1930s Korea while it was under Japanese colo-
nial rule. Director Park Chan-wook (known in America for Oldboy) takes the tale of a young female

imbues it with his signature violence, horror, and unconventional eroticism. Like the novel, the film
consists of three distinct parts, each taking a dierent characters point of view, providing the viewer

Wit and big words take center stage in this irreverent and profane mystery-comedy set against the

interrupting a stunningly misconceived performance of Titus Andronicus, he accepts a job investi-
gating a series of faith-healing miracles at a large manor owned by his old friend, Lord Michael Logan
(Matthew Modine). Adapted from Stephen Frys novel, this enjoyable frolic delivers brilliant repartee,
plenty of tongue-in-cheek gags, and a dash of slapstick, before it culminates in a semi-sendup of
the classic detective case-solving climax where the involved parties are gathered in a room to be
confronted by an extremely non-debonair Nick Charles.

Directed by Dome Karukoski
This slyly witty, and lightly kinky, crowd-pleaser traces
the path of Finnish cult-artist Touko Laaksonen from
his WWII military service to his worldwide acceptance
as an artist, better known as Tom of Finland. Finland
was not always one of those liberal socialist utopias
Scandinavia seems to specialize in. As LGBT rights go, it
was as repressive as everywhere else in the 1950s. One
gay mans rebellion took the form of art: his aggres-
sively, frankly idealized hypermasculine drawings fought
the stereotype of homosexuals as feminine by going as
far as he could in the opposite direction. In this tour de
force biopic, Pekka Strang plays the artist over a span
of half a century, tracing his arts path from being illegal
and hidden to being celebrated in museum retrospec-
tives and even on stamps. Director Dome Karukoski

How could genocide occur in a country without its citizens ever knowing? In this sweeping docu-
mentary, filmmaker Pamela Yates gives a powerful new voice to the previously silenced Mayan peo-
ple of Guatemala, who suered the slaughter of entire villages in the 1980s under former president
Rios Montt. The murders committed by Montt and his army, backed by the Reagan administration,
went mostly unnoticed by the Mayans fellow countrymen, many of whom still do not believe a
genocide ever occurred. Yates juxtaposes moving interviews with Mayan survivors and footage of
Montts 2013 trial, which culminated in a fierce citizen uprising that flooded the streets of Guatemala
with protestors demanding long-overdue justice. 500 Years is an important and inspiring film that
bears witness to the stories and strength of Guatemalas indigenous people. In Spanish with subtitles

This isnt another sad doc about mankinds wanton destruction of an endangered species. Rather, its
an exploration of the good and bad of modern media activism, told through the story of the Amazon
pink river dolphin. And its provocative to the extreme, refusing to back away from the painful, knot-
ty mess that arises from media crusades. When it comes to activism, theres almost nothing more
powerful than an unforgettable image with its capacity to inspire and transform. Richard Rasmussen,
well-known host of a popular NatGeo wildlife show, knows this well. Hes the Steve Irwin of Brazil,
using in-the-wild confrontations with deadly creatures to call attention to conservation eorts.
When he determines to do something about the siege on dolphins in Brazil and Colombia, he con-
vinces a group of villagers to allow him to film them illegally killing a pregnant dolpin, which they chop
up and use to catch lucrative piracatinga scavenger fish. After the footage airs on a popular Sunday
night TV program, it immediately leads to a temporary ban on national piracatinga fishing. Rasmus-
sens video is an extreme means of upending the status quo. The fishermen accused him of sabotag-
ing their livelihoods and safety, while he pointed to the positive outcome. Mark Grieco oers no easy

THE SALESMAN
2016 | Iran, France | PG-13 | 124 min.
Directed by Asghar Farhadi
Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) made
global headlines for boycotting the 2017 Oscars in
protest of President Donald Trumps travel ban. Despite
the backlash, Farhadi won the Best Foreign Language
Oscar for his minimalist masterpiecea simmering
domestic thriller with masterful Hitchcockian suspense
and twists. Married couple Eman and Rana are star-
ring together in a local production of Arthur Millers
Death of a Salesman when a violent assault upends
their lives. Eman is disastrously driven to seek revenge,
more motivated than he realizes by his portrayal of
Willy Loman, a character who similarly struggled with
his inability to provide for his wife. A climactic final act
brings the parallel between Millers play and Eman and
Ranas lives to a quietly devastating conclusion. Tragic

RESERVOIR DOGS
1992 | USA | R | 99 min.
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Cinema giant Quentin Tarantinos debut film about a heist gone wrong still feels as fresh and invig-
orating as it did when it premiered 25 years ago. A crew of bandits on the run from police gather in
a warehouse in Los Angeles and attempt to suss out which of them is actually an undercover cop.
The tense action and expertly-crafted dialogue is delivered masterfully by one of the greatest casts
of actors ever assembled, including Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen, and
Tarantino himself. Not for the faint of heart, the films gloriously bloody sequences (which reportedly
caused even Wes Craven to duck out when the film was on the festival circuit in 1992) provided not
only the blueprint for Tarantinos future films, but also served to inspire a generation of filmmakers.
Whether you listen to Super Sounds of the Seventies on the reg or are new to this influential crime
drama, dont miss a chance to experience this explosive and groundbreaking thriller on the big screen.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE
1942 | USA | NR | 99 min.
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
Just as the US was entering WWII 75 years ago, Hollywood produced one of the greatest screw-
ball comedies of the Golden Age, starring Carole Lombard in her final role before an untimely
death. Lombard and Jack Benny play a married couple who are running a Warsaw theater troupe
when the Nazis invade Poland. After a Nazi spy obtains incriminating information about the Polish
resistance, the theater troupe must pose as Nazis themselves in order to intercept the info. Not
everything goes according to plan, hijinks ensue, Shakespeare gets egregiously quoted, and the
Nazis get skewered. Directed by the legendary Ernst Lubitsch, this true classic achieves the perfect
balance between the absurd comedy of the Marx Brothers and the for the greater good gravitas of

Charlies career reads like a dream come true: a cosmopolitan wine critic, his compendium of wine
rankings has made him the toast of Frances epicurean scene. But his high-city living gets a bitter
taste of reality when the prodigal son must return home to help revive his familys failing vineyard.
There he butts heads with his gru father, and it becomes clear the so-called wine expert may not
know the first thing about the fine art of making wine. Thinking modern contrivances will be the
ticket to success, its only by getting back in touch with his rootslearning the traditional methods
of his father and reconnecting with the daughter of the neighboring rival winerydoes the vine-
yard start to flourish. Set in the stunning heart of Burgundy wine country and vintage in its distinct
feel-good pleasures, First Growth oers a compelling inside look inside the French wine industry.

simple, mesmerizing documentarya vital entry in the growing chapter of cinema

Revolting Rhymes, a collection of poems that retold the classic stories of Snow White, Red Riding
Hood, and other favorites with delightfully strange endings. This computer-animated adaptation
