 PRESENTATION

The Lord of the Rings is a film series consisting of three high fantasy adventure
films directed by Peter Jackson. They are based on the novel The Lord of the Rings by J.
R. R. Tolkien. The films are divided into The Fellowship of the Ring(2001), The Two
Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). They were produced by New Line
Cinema.
Considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects ever undertaken,
with an overall budget of $281 million, the entire project took eight years, with the filming
for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand, Jackson's native
country.
The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30
total Academy Award nominations.

1. THE AUTHOR
JOHN RONALD REUEL TOLKIEN

John Ronal Reuel Tolkien known by his pen name J.R.R. TOLKIEN. He was a
South African poet, writer, philologist and university professor.
He was born on 3rd January, 1892. He was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
His parents were Arthur Reuel Tolkien and Mabel Suffield.
In 1896, when he was 4 years old, his father died and he moved to England with
his family.
He spent a happy childhood with his mother and brother Arthur in Birmingham,
England, but in 1904, when he was 12 years old, his mother died.
He studied Philology at Oxford University. John was a very intelligent student,
and in 1915, he graduated from university.
In 1916, he got married to Mary Bratt. They had four children called John Reuel,
Michael Reuel, Christopher Reuel and Priscilla Reuel. Only Christopher and
Priscilla are still alive.
He wrote The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (1954-1955): The
Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954) and The Return of the
King (1955). The Lord of the Rings is his most famous work.
He worked at Oxford University and Leeds University.
In 1968, he and his wife moved to Bournemouth.
In 1971, his wife Mary died then when he was 81 years old, J.R.R. Tolkien died
on 2nd of September in 1973. He died in Bournemouth, England.

2.1.THE DIRECTOR
PETER JACKSON

Peter Robert Jackson is a New Zealander film director, screenwriter, film

producer. He was born on 31st October, 1961. He was born in Pukerua Bay,
New Zealand.
He got married to Frances Walsh in 1987. They had two children called Billy
Jackson and Katie Jackson.
He is well known as the director, writer, and producer of The Lord of the Rings
trilogy. Jackson won three Academy Awards in his career, including the Best
Director award in 2003.

2.2.THE CAST
- Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins
He is a Hobbit. Bilbo is Frodos uncle.
He is known as the hobbit looter.
He has got light blue eyes, brown hair and large feet. He is short, slim and
agile.
He lives in a small village called The Shire.

- Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

He is a Hobbit. Frodo is Bilbos nephew.
He is known as the ring bearer.
He has got blue eyes, curly blonde hair and large feet. He is short and slim.
He lives in a small village called The Shire. He likes reading.

- Sean Astin as Samwise Gangee Sam
He is a Hobbit. Sam is Frodos friend.
He has got black eyes, curly brown hair and large feet. He is short and
overweight. He likes eating.

- Dominic Monaghan as Meriadoc Brandybuck Merry

He is a Hobbit. Merry is Frodos friend and Pippins cousin.
He has got brown eyes, curly blonde hair and large feet. He is tall
(compared to the other Hobbits) and slim.
He has got a strong character and fidelity to his friends.

- Billy Boyd as Peregrin Tuk Pippin

He is a Hobbit. Pippin is Frodos friend and Merrys cousin.
He has got light eyes, curly black hair and large feet. He is short and slim.
He has got a good sense of humor.

- Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn

He is a Dnedain (a sub-race of men). Known as Trancos. Aragorn is
Frodos friend.
He has got black eyes, wavy black hair. He is tall and slim.
He got married to Arwen. He is a brave and honorable man.
He is an excellent and strong warrior. He always uses a sword called
Anduril when he fights.
He is the Unified Kingdom King.

- Liv Tyler as Arwen

She is a Peredhil (half - elven). Arwen is Aragorns wife and Elronds
daughter.
She has got blue eyes, long blonde hair, white skin and pointed ears. She
is tall and slim.
She is very beautiful and intelligent. She is immortal but renounces her
immortality to marry Aragorn.
She is the Unified Kingdom Queen.

- Hugo Weaving as Lord Elrond
He is a Peredhil (half-elven). Elrond is Arwens father. Known as Lord of
Imladris.
He has got grey eyes, long black hair, white skin and pointed ears. He is
tall and slim.
He is a strong and wise Peredhil. He uses the best of the Three Ring of the
Elves called Vilya (The Blue Ring)
He is immortal.

- Cate Blanchett as Lady Galadriel

She is an Elf. Galadriel is Elronds mother-in-law and Arwens
grandmother. Known as the Lady of Lrien or the Lady of the Golden
Wood.
She has got blue eyes, long golden hair, white skin and pointed ears. She
is very tall and slim.
She is the most beautiful elf. She uses one of the Three Ring of the Elves
called Nenya (The White Ring)
She is immortal.

- Ian McKellen as Gandalf

He is a Wizard, member of the Istari order. Known as Gandalf the Grey,
but returns from the death as Gandalf the White. Gandalf is Frodo and
Bilbos friend.
He has got light blue eyes, long white hair, long white beard. He is tall.
He is wearing a large grey cloak, a pointed blue hat, and a large staff.
He is an old man but he is very wise, powerful and brave.

- Orlando Bloom as Legolas

He is an Elf. Legolas is Thranduils son and Aragorns friend. He is the
Prince of the Woodland Realm. Knows as Greenleaf.
He has got blue eyes, long blonde hair and straight. He is tall and slim.
He is very agile and intelligent. He is a great archer and warrior. He always
uses elven knives, bow and arrow when he fights.
He is immortal.

- John Rys-Davies as Gimli
He is a Dwarf. Gimli is Glins son and Aragorns friend. Known as the
Lord of the Glittering Caves.
He has got brown eyes, long-curly red hair, a long red beard. He is short
and overweight.
He is a strong and brave Dwarf. He is an excellent warrior, wise and
honorable. He always uses an ax when he fights.

- Sean Bean as Boromir

He is a Dnedain (a sub-race of men). He is the Prince of Gondor. Boromir
is Aragorns friend. Known as the Captain of the White Tower.
He has got brown eyes, shoulder-length brown hair. He is tall and strong.
He is a brave Dnedain. He is a good warrior. He always uses a sword
when he fights.
He dies fighting the Uruk-Hais to save Merry and Pippin.

- Christopher Lee as Saruman

He is a Wizard, leader of the Istari order. Known as Saruman the White or
the Lord of Isengard.
He has got black eyes, long white hair, long white beard. He is tall and
slim. He is wearing a large white cloak and a large white staff.
He is an old man but he is a powerful and wise Wizard. He is very
calculating and intelligent.
He became evil when he is drawn by the power of the One Ring.

- Andy Serkis as Gollum/Smagol

Gollum originally called Smagol. He is a Hobbit but he is drawn by the
power of the One Ring, it disfigured him physically and mentally.
He lives about 589 years thanks to the power of the One Ring
He is very ugly, short, slim and bald. He has got light eyes.
He dies falling to the lava of the volcano next to the One Ring,
destroying it.

 - Sala Barker as Sauron

He is a Maia (an angelic spirit). He was the most powerful of the Maiar
but he was corrupted by Melkor. He is the main antagonist and villain.
Known as the Dark Lord of Mordor.
He was the first owner of the One Ring. He uses magic power and led
an army of Orcs and Uruk-Hais.
He is very tall and strong. He is always wearing an armor. He dies when
the One Ring is destroyed by Frodo in the lava of the volcano.

2.3.THE TRILOGY

The story of the movie revolves around of the One Ring and the adventures of
Frodo Baggins and his friends in their mission to destroy the One Ring and
ensure the destruction of the Dark Lord, Sauron.
The trilogy won eleven Academy Awards, and it was a major worldwide
financial success.
Its my favorite trilogy and I`m a big fan of them because for me its the most
amazing movies that I saw.
Including three epic fantasy, action and adventure films, which are:

2.3.1. The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Is the first movie of the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. The movie
premiered on 21st December, 2001.
The Fellowship of the Ring was nominated for thirteen Academy
Awards and won four in 2002.
The movie begins by narrating the creation of the Rings of Power. In
this episode; the young and shy, Frodo Baggins, inherits a ring from
Bilbo Baggins (the One Ring). Frodo with his friends called The
Fellowship of the Ring, a group make up of Hobbits, men, a wizard,
dwarf and an elf, has the mission to carry the One Ring travelling all
over Middle-earth to the Mount Doom also called Orodruin (in this
place, the One Ring was forged) and destroy the ring for always but
Orodruin is the land of the Dark Lord Sauron, where his army of Orcs
and Uruk-Hais are concentrated.
The Fellowship must combat the external forces of evil, but also the
internal forces and the corrupting influence of the One Ring.
The end of this part is tied to the fate of the fellowship.
Important facts:
- Gandalf faces a Balrog (a demonic creature), and he dies (apparently)
- Boromir dies fighting the Uruk-Hais to save Merry and Pippin.
- Saruman is corrupted by the One Ring.

2.3.2. The Two Towers (2002)

Is the second movie of the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. The movie
premiered on 18th December, 2002.
The Two Towers was nominated for six Academy Awards and won
two in 2003.
The movie begins after the death of Boromir and the disappearance of
Gandalf, the Fellowship of the Ring dissolves.
Merry and Pippin are captured by the Uruk-Hais. Frodo and Sam
continue alone to Mordor to destroy the One Ring in the Mount
Doom/Orodruin. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas chase the Uruk-Hais in
order to free their captured friends (Merry and Pippin).

 In the end of this part, Sarumans army falls and all march to the final
battle against of the Saurons army.
Important facts:
- Frodo and Sam meet Gollum.
- Merry and Pippin escape from the Uruk-Hais and meet Barbol (an Ent and
Guardian of the trees).
- Gandalf returns from death and meets again with Merry and Pippin.

2.3.3. The Return of the King (2003)

Is the third movie of the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. The movie
premiered on 17th December, 2003.
The Return of the King was nominated for eleven Academy Awards
and won all in 2004, and also becomes one of the most awarded films
in the history, equaling in number of awards to Titanic and Ben-Hur.
The Return of the King is considered one of the greatest and most
successful films in the history of the cinema.
The movie begins with a memory of how the hobbit Smagol came to
possess the One Ring. Frodo y Sam with Gollum arrive at Orodruin.
Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas meet again with Merry, Pippin and
Gandalf in Isengard.
Aragorn and his friends are going to fight the Saurons army. The fight
seems to be lost but, at that moment, Frodo throws the One Ring to the
lava of the volcano in Orodruin, destroying it next to Gollum. Sauron
dies and his army is defeated. Aragon reclaims the throne of Gondor
and marries to Arwen.
Gimli returns to the Glittering Caves. Legolas returns to Woodland
Realm. Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin return to The Shire.
Frodo, while happy for his friends, is unable to cope with the traumas
of his journey, he departs Middle Earth for the Grey Havens with his
uncle Bilbo, Gandalf, Lord Elrond, Lady Galadriel and the remaining
elves.
Frodo wrote his stories and he leaves Sam the Red Book of
Westmarch which details their adventures.

 In the end of the story, Sam returns home after firing his friends on the
Gray Havens. Sam says, "Well, I'm back".
Important facts:

- Gandalf rescued Frodo and Sam from Orodruin.

- Gollum falls next to the One Ring to the lava of the volcano after pulling
the finger to Frodo.

3. CONCLUSION/OPINION
- The trilogy was a major worldwide financial success.
- The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded
- Despite some variations, the trilogy usually follows the main plot of the
novel on which it is based.
- The film series are considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious
film projects ever undertaken.
- The trilogy is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth.
- For me, its the most amazing movies (The Fellowship of the Ring, The
Two Towers and The Return of the King) that I saw, compared to others
movies, for example: Batman trilogy, Harry Potter saga or Star Wars saga.
- The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King
are long films but very funny, exciting, entertaining and many epic action
scenes.
- I recommend watching these fun movies, youll like them a lot.
