Pada kesempatann kali ini IBI akan membahas tentang Storytelling.
Storytelling adalah cara yang dilakukan untuk menyampaikan suatu cerita kepada para penyimak, baik dalam
bentuk kata-kata, gambar, f oto, maupun suara. Storytelling sering digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar
utamanya pada tingkat pemula atau anak-anak. Teknik ini bermanf aat melatih kemampuan mendengar secara
menyenangkan.
Dibaw ah ini ada beberpa contoh short Storytelling dalam bahasa inggris dan artinya.
1. The M onk e y and the Crocodile
The Monkey and the Crocodile
It w as a beautif ul lake surrounded by lush green grasses, beautif ul trees, mountains and sw eetest, tastiest
jamun trees. There lived a monkey on one of the jamun trees located near the lake.
The lake also had a f ew crocodiles. There w as one crocodile that used to collect the jamun f ruits f rom the lake
that f all f rom the tree.
As the crocodile visits the jamun trees every day, it became f riends w ith Monkey. Crocodile and monkey met
every day. The monkey helped crocodile by providing more and f resh jamun f ruits f rom the tree. Their
relationship continued and they became close pals.
One day, the monkey asked the crocodile to give some jamun f ruits to his w if e and f amily as the f ruits w ere
more delicious. The crocodile agreed and took a lot of jamun f ruits to his w if e.

His w if e w as so happy and surprised that she never ate so delicious f ruits, so f ar. She inquired her husband,
w here he got those f ruits. The crocodile told her, his f riend, monkey w ho lives in a Jamun tree gave these f or
him.
The w if e crocodile made a plan in her mind. She asked her husband, Does your f riend eat these f ruits every
day? The crocodile replied yes. She added, Oh my goodness. These are the sw eetest f ruits w e ever ate.
Imagine how delicious the monkeys heart w ould be if he eat these f ruits daily! I need the heart of your f riend.
Can you please bring it f or me?
The crocodile w as shocked to hear it f rom his w if e. He replied, But he is my close f riend. I cant do this to him.
The w if e crocodile told him, dont w orry. You bring him here. I w ill then take care! Or else, you may try to push
him dow n into the w ater if he doesnt know sw imming!
Af ter a long time, the crocodile agreed to bring monkey to his w if e.
The very next day, crocodile invited monkey to join them f or lunch and asked f or his f avorite f oods. Monkey
happily agreed to be the guest and but w orried that the monkey did not know how to sw im in the lake.
Crocodile on thinking about monkeys sorrow , pleased monkey and told him, Dont w orry. I w ill carry you on my
back and w ill take you back saf ely too!
The monkey accepted and crocodile rode him to his home on his back on the w ater. As they reached half w ay,
the crocodile tried to push monkey dow n into the w ater. How ever, monkey held the crocodile tightly and did not
f all. Monkey got suspicious about crocodiles act and asked him to tell the truth.
Since crocodile believed him as his good f riend, he told about the conversation and the f ight his w if e had w ith
him and he w as taking monkey to eat his heart!
The intelligent monkey said, Oh my dear f riend, you should have told me this earlier. I lef t my heart on one of the
branches of the tree as I w ont carry it if I travel long. If you take me back, I can give you my heart.
Crocodile accepted and rode the monkey back to the lake. As they reached the tree w here the monkey lived, the
monkey climbed quickly and escaped f rom the crocodile.
He shouted at crocodile, I thought you as a good f riend, but you cheated me. I w ill never come back and never
be your f riend.
The crocodile understood his mistake and returned back home empty handed, losing a good f riend indeed

There lived a crow on a tree top. Everyday he used to w atch w ith utter w onder the acts of an eagle.The eagle
had a nest high up on a mountain. He used to sw oop dow n f rom there to get hold of a lamb and f ly up again and
all in one go.The crow w as amazed by the f eat of the eagle.One day he w as so excited that he w anted to
imitate the eagle. So up he f lew as high as he could. From there he began to sw oop dow n. He came dow n and
dow n. But alas, he could not control himself . He crashed on the ground and broke his beak.

The Cactus
The most notable thing about Time is that it is so purely relative. A large amount of reminiscence is, by common
consent, conceded to the drow ning man; and it is not past belief that one may review an entire courtship w hile
removing ones gloves.
That is w hat Trysdale w as doing, standing by a table in his bachelor apartments. On the table stood a singular-
looking green plant in a red earthen jar. The plant w as one of the species of cacti, and w as provided w ith long,
tentacular leaves that perpetually sw ayed w ith the slightest breeze w ith a peculiar beckoning motion.
Trysdales f riend, the brother of the bride, stood at a sideboard complaining at being allow ed to drink alone. Both
men w ere in evening dress. White f avors like stars upon their coats shone through the gloom of the apartment.
As he slow ly unbuttoned his gloves, there passed through Trysdales mind a sw if t, scarif ying retrospect of the
last f ew hours. It seemed that in his nostrils w as still the scent of the f low ers that had been banked in odorous
masses about the church, and in his ears the low pitched hum of a thousand w ell-bred voices, the rustle of crisp
garments, and, most insistently recurring, the draw ling w ords of the minister irrevocably binding her to another.
From this last hopeless point of view he still strove, as if it had become a habit of his mind, to reach some
conjecture as to w hy and how he had lost her. Shaken rudely by the uncompromising f act, he had suddenly
f ound himself conf ronted by a thing he had never bef ore f aced his ow n innermost, unmitigated, arid
unbedecked self . He saw all the garbs of pretence and egoism that he had w orn now turn to rags of f olly. He
shuddered at the thought that to others, bef ore now , the garments of his soul must have appeared sorry and
threadbare. Vanity and conceit? These w ere the joints in his armor. And how f ree f rom either she had alw ays
beenBut w hy
As she had slow ly moved up the aisle tow ard the altar he had f elt an unw orthy, sullen exultation that had
served to support him. He had told himself that her paleness w as f rom thoughts of another than the man to
w hom she w as about to give herself . But even that poor consolation had been w renched f rom him. For, w hen
he saw that sw if t, limpid, upw ard look that she gave the man w hen he took her hand, he knew himself to be
f orgotten. Once that same look had been raised to him, and he had gauged its meaning. Indeed, his conceit had
crumbled; its last prop w as gone. Why had it ended thus? There had been no quarrel betw een them, nothing
For the thousandth time he remarshalled in his mind the events of those last f ew days bef ore the tide had so
suddenly turned.
She had alw ays insisted upon placing him upon a pedestal, and he had accepted her homage w ith royal
grandeur. It had been a very sw eet incense that she had burned bef ore him; so modest (he told himself ); so
childlike and w orshipf ul, and (he w ould once have sw orn) so sincere. She had invested him w ith an almost
supernatural number of high attributes and excellencies and talents, and he had absorbed the oblation as a

desert drinks the rain that can coax f rom it no promise of blossom or f ruit.
As Trysdale grimly w renched apart the seam of his last glove, the crow ning instance of his f atuous and tardily
mourned egoism came vividly back to him. The scene w as the night w hen he had asked her to come up on his
pedestal w ith him and share his greatness. He could not, now , f or the pain of it, allow his mind to dw ell upon the
memory of her convincing beauty that nightthe careless w ave of her hair, the tenderness and virginal charm of
her looks and w ords. But they had been enough, and they had brought him to speak. During their conversation
she had said:
And Captain Carruthers tells me that you speak the Spanish language like a native. Why have you hidden this
accomplishment f rom me? Is there anything you do not know ?
Now , Carruthers w as an idiot. No doubt he (Trysdale) had been guilty (he sometimes did such things) of airing at
the club some old, canting Castilian proverb dug f rom the hotchpotch at the back of dictionaries. Carruthers,
w ho w as one of his incontinent admirers, w as the very man to have magnif ied this exhibition of doubtf ul
erudition.
But, alas! the incense of her admiration had been so sw eet and f lattering. He allow ed the imputation to pass
w ithout denial. Without protest, he allow ed her to tw ine about his brow this spurious bay of Spanish
scholarship. He let it grace his conquering head, and, among its sof t convolutions, he did not f eel the prick of the
thorn that w as to pierce him later.
How glad, how shy, how tremulous she w as! How she f luttered like a snared bird w hen he laid his mightiness
at her f eet! He could have sw orn, and he could sw ear now , that unmistakable consent w as in her eyes, but,
coyly, she w ould give him no direct answ er. I w ill send you my answ er to-morrow , she said; and he, the
indulgent, conf ident victor, smilingly granted the delay. The next day he w aited, impatient, in his rooms f or the
w ord. At noon her groom came to the door and lef t the strange cactus in the red earthen jar. There w as no note,
no message, merely a tag upon the plant bearing a barbarous f oreign or botanical name. He w aited until night,
but her answ er did not come. His large pride and hurt vanity kept him f rom seeking her. Tw o evenings later they
met at a dinner. Their greetings w ere conventional, but she looked at him, breathless, w ondering, eager. He w as

alw ays be f ired. Several months later, there w as a w ealthy w idow w ho interested him. He married the w idow
and of course, he w as very happy to be living in luxury again.
The w idow had a daughter w ho w as very diligent and clever to w eave. Her name is Jambean, a beautif ul girl

and had been f amous because of her w eaving. How ever, Galoran did not like the girl, because the girl of ten
scolded him because of his laziness. Finally, he threatened to torture and kill Jambean. He revealed the plan to

Hearing the new s, Jambean w as very sad but she volunteered herself to be killed by her f ather. She told that
she w anted to be dumped into a dam and did not burry under the ground af ter the death. The mother agreed and
did all of her w ants. In the dam, her body and head suddenly turned into the golden slugs.
Several years later, there are tw o w idow s w ho w ere looking f or f irew ood. They w ere kindred, the f irst w idow
named Mbok Sambega Rondo and the second called Mbok Rondo Sembagil. When looking f or the f irew ood in the
jungle, they w ere very surprised because of f inding the beautif ul golden slugs. They brought it and maintained at
home.
Once they brought the snails, there w as alw ays a miracle every day. Their kitchen w as alw ays f illed w ith the
delicious f ood w hen they came home f rom w ork. They w ere very surprised, and w anted to know the person
w ho made those f oods. They pretended to go to w ork and hid in the back of the house. A f ew moments later,
there w as a beautif ul girl came f rom the inside of the conch and she began to cook the delicious meals.
Both w idow s then secretly held and did not let the girl to get into the snail anymore. The girl apparently w as
Jambean w ho had been killed by her f ather. Both w idow s then allow ed her to stay w ith them. Because of their
versatility in w eaving, she got her f amous back and made a handsome prince attracted. In the end, she married

Suatu hari, orang tuanya meninggal dunia namun ia tidak peduli dan terus menghab iskan uang seperti
seb elumnya. Karena hidupnya b egitu b oros, maka harta yang ia miliki hab is dan ia menjadi seorang
pengangguran. Banyak warga yang ib a terhadapnya, namun setiap kali ia mendapatkan pekerjaan, ia hanya
b ermalas-malasan dan memb uat ia sering dipecat. Beb erapa b ulan kemudian, terdapat seorang janda kaya

Janda terseb ut mempunyai seorang anak perempuan yang sangat rajin dan pandai menenun. Namanya
Jamb ean, seorang gadis yang tenunannya sangat indah dan terkenal di desa terseb ut. Namun, Galoran tidak
menyukai gadis terseb ut, karena sang gadis selalu menegurnya karena selalu b ermalas-malasan. Karena
b egitu b enci dengan Jamb ean, ia mengancam akan menyiksa dan memb unuhnya. Ia mengungkapkan
rencana terseb ut kepada istrinya dan sang istri sangatlah sedih mendengar ancaman terseb ut.
Mendengar b erita terseb ut, Jamb ean sangat sedih namun ia merelakan dirinya dib unuh oleh sang ayah. Ia
b erpesan ketika ia telah meninggal, ia ingin agar mayatnya dib uang ke seb uah b endungan dan jangan

udang dan siput atau diseb ut seb agai keong dalam b ahasa jawa.
Beb erapa tahun kemudian, dua orang janda sedang mencari kayu b akar. Mereka adalah kakak b eradik
dengan nama Mb ok Rondo Samb ega dan Mb ok Rondo Semb agil. Ketika sedang mencari kayu di hutan,
mereka sangat terkejut karena menemukan keong dan siput yang b erwarna emas serta sangat
indah. Keduanya kemudian memb awa keong dan siput terseb ut untuk dipelihara di rumah.
Setelah mereka memb awa siput terseb ut dan menjadikannya seb agai hewan peliharaan, selalu ada keajaib an
setiap hari. Dapur mereka selalu dipenuhi makanan lezat ketika mereka pulang dari b ekerja. Mereka sangat
heran, dan mereka ingin mengetahui siapa orang yang selalu memb uat makanan lezat terseb ut. Mereka
b erpura-pura pergi b ekerja dan b ersemb unyi di b elakang rumah. Beb erapa saat kemudian, muncullah
seorang gadis cantik dari dalam keong terseb ut dan ia mulai memasak makanan-makanan lezat.
Kedua janda terseb ut kemudian secara diam-diam memegang gadis terseb ut dan tidak memb iarkannya lagi
untuk masuk ke dalam keong. Gadis itu ternyata adalah Jamb ean yang telah dib unuh oleh ayahnya. Kedua
janda terseb ut kemudian mengizinkan Jamb ean untuk tinggal b ersama mereka. Karena kepandaiannya dalam
menenun, ia sangat terkenal dan seorang pangeran tampan tertarik kepadanya. Pada akhirnya, ia menikah
dengan pangeran dan hidup b ahagia.

and started to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, looking at him overcome w ith grief and
learning the cause, said, Pray, do not grieve so; but go and put a stone in the hole, and imagine that the gold is
still lying there. It w ill do to you quite the same act; f or once the gold w as there, you lef t it nothing, as you did not
make the slightest use of it.
