Students will design, collaborate and write a plan for a family trip to the Northeast in the winter after
using Popplet. They will research areas of interest, weather, travel costs, and evaluate the costs
associated with a trip. They will be given a budget and type of car they will drive. The family will
have four members, plus a dog. The students will calculate travel costs, lodging costs, and site seeing
costs, along with weather and alternative areas to visit.

Using first Popplet and then Office 365/Excel, students will work in class collaborating and
researching costs of travel, lodging, pet siting and dog friendly areas to visit. They will research
weather reports and collaborate on items to bring on the trip. They will research areas of interest to
visit that supports their unit of study on government.

A teacher from the Northeast will provide feedback and assessment.

The lesson will be concluded with a presentation, both in class and posted on the classs website and
blog for family members to review.

Beyond the Basics productivity tools are software and apps that supports student learning and
collaboration. They help teacher make and do tasks. Some examples are concept maps, blogs, Office
365, and graphing apps.
Concept maps can help students achieve content as they work collaboratively to define a presented
problem, and work towards achievement of the standard/contant. Productivity tools are expanding at a
rapid pace, with apps that dovetail with computer programs, making them accessible outside of the
classroom. The integration has become more accessible, as easy of accss has increased as they have
abeen refined to become more user friendly. They are trending towards less nline work, and towards
interactive adaptive interactions. That is, the program adapts to the users knowledge level and supports
them in their learning.
Instructional software is also following this trend. The challenge has been the time needed to be trained
on the software. With more schools employing technology specialists, and with the onset of user groups
and pre-created lesson plan templates, this problem is beginning to be surmounted.
My lesson incorporates the two bigget needs in academic content, math and ELA, along with a pracrical
real life problem for elementary school students. Using Office 365 they are able to collaborate in a way
that circumvents some behavior and emotional challenges of some students so that they can work
together. The Glogster app not only allows them to be creative and use technology, it brings in the
community to particfuate in learning. This increases the visibility of the school and increases parent
involvement,something that is of concern for most Title 1 schools. In lower socio-economic schools, or
ELL learners, some studnets do not have access to a computer. In my experience all studnets have
access to a smart phone and can access the curriculum and app through the use of a smart phone when
they are at home.
