Psychiatry Department

As the frequency of mental illnesses is increasing, requirement of psychiatric services in every hospital in
general, and teaching hospital like ours in particular has been the necessity. The department was
functioning since the establishment of the hospital, combine with the internal medicine department.
Psychiatry ward has been providing services to patient combine with medicine ward in the starting phase.
At present we already started separate psychiatry ward combine with ENT ward since Nov, 2016.
Activities
1. The nurses are divided into three shifts.
2. The nurses receive the patient accordingly (e.g. medicine ward, ICU, HDU etc.)
3. Counseling has been started for the alcohol related disorder.
4. Somatic experiencing therapy also has been started as needed.

Since May, 2016, we started formal counseling session for the patient of alcohol related disorder in
medical ward till have separate psychiatry ward in the Dhulikhel Hospital.

Challenges
1. Lack of appropriate beds for psychiatric patient, and other equipment.
2. Lack of proper training to the staff.

Future plans
1. Patient care
Plan to build a Rehabilitation Centre for de-addiction, occupational and vocational therapy for
those with chronic psychiatric illnesses, and psychosocial intervention for any behavioral
problems.
Continue counseling session for the patient of alcohol related disorder and also other psychiatric
patients.
2. Staff development
Plan to conduct in-service education according to the need of ward.
3. Environmental and physical facilities
Plan to have appropriate beds as required.
Plan to keep bed side lockers for each bed.
Plan to have appropriate place for visitors.
