Dear SAHR
READERS RIDES Here are some pictures of a 64 Morris Minor rebuild. I wanted to bring some old
school look to this car of the 60s period. Having grown up in the 60s and going
to school in my Old Ladys Morris Minor, I have memories of sneaking the car
out at night with pals and trying to roll the old Morris and, having ridden the tyres
off the rims in an attempt to roll it, brought back memories of this iconic car. Hav-
ing found the body shell in Utrecht, then nding bits and pieces, we eventually
started working on the body and preparing it for a paint job (Audi Metallic Black).
We started getting somewhere with the Morris.
Throwing out the old Morris 1000 motor and putting an Austin Marina 1500
motor in, coupled to the Morris Minor 4-speed box, we were looking good. The
cylinder head was done; ported, polished, gas-owed, bigger valves and double
valve springs, performance branches put on, side-raft carb, hi-lift cam and a
Bruten performance exhaust system sorted the engine out.
Wheels were 14 inch Audi mags; all-new red upholstery seats, carpeting, wood-
rim steering and gauges were tted. With all this done, it really made this little
car something special. A lot of chrome was put on - even the grill was chromed.
The little Morris made many a lightie in their Golfs think twice. What a trip
down memory lane this little car took us on.
Thanks for the wonderful magazine, which really put Hot Rodding back on the
road in SA.
Yours faithfully, Des Wade

The rst car he bought was from his fa-
ther, Corrie, a blue 1950 Standard 8. He
taught himself how to work on the body,
sprayed her yellow and black and he put
a Standard 10 engine in her. This was
his rst car and also the start of his new
found inspiration and hobby.
Jurie never stopped going to car shows and decided it is time to re-ignite his pas-
sion. He bought a Popular body in Germiston for a mere R170,00. The body was
7. not too bad but he wanted to change the whole look. He sprayed her black with
grey on the boot and airbrushed Conan in blue on the back. He then got a 1946
Anglia which is one of his favorites and he learned how to change and mould the
body, the fenders and how to lower it. The upholstery he also learned to do as a
young boy when he helped his uncle. It took Jurie seven years to build this one.
The Anglia was sprayed red and on the back he airbrushed a tombstone with a
tree and an owl and the words Old Fords Never Die and on the front fenders,
8. a standing Conan with a sword. People always compliment him on his artwork.
Jurie then started the Standard 1948 project which took him over 18 months to
build. He sprayed her blue, with silver, (which he had mixed at Freds Auto Paints)
she had mags on and turned out to be a real beauty. He sold her at the rst meet-
ing he took her to at Piston Ring to Uncle Tommy. At that same meeting where she
was sold, a man with his car on a trailer took a corner and damaged the Standard.
He paid for the damages and luckily Uncle Tommy still wanted her and said he
will x her up himself.
In 2010 he customized and sprayed his friend Koos Anglia. Sadly due to unfore-
seen circumstances, Koos sold her to a gentleman from Durban. She was made
lower and wider with a roof chop and sprayed Ford Focus orange and black and
9. the seats were upholstered. Jurie got a 46 Ford Anglia as part of the payment for
building Koos Anglia and wants to transform her into a hot new Rod.
By the time he started stripping the Anglia, he had already designed her in his
mind. He bought a Volvo 1969 station wagon for the front suspension and tted a
diff. The engine was from a Ford Grenada that he bought and everything lined up
perfectly. The oor panels were very rusted so the next step was to x and close
it up. He widened the fenders 70mm on each side and in the front he has 195/60
