COMAND Trouble Shooting

Objective:
At the conclusion of this module, you will be able to:
Operate SDS to perform testing of COMAND system
Use NETSTAR to find needed information.
Use EDAC for repair help

Vehicle and tools required:


Model 211 with COMAND, CD Changer, Navigation, Logic, and
Phone
SDS
NETSTAR
Electrical test kit and student tool set.
MOST connector
Required material:
Classroom handout

Instructions:

1. Follow the instructions and answer the questions.


2. Ask your instructor if assistance is needed.
3. Stop at all instructor check points.

Customer states that radio does not play and navigation does not work.

1. Verify customer statement, does the radio play? YES NO


2. Does instrument cluster show audio, navigation, and telephone as available?
YES NO

Check the Simple and Obvious


1. Look over the vehicle; is there anything out of place or broken that could cause
a problem? YES NO

Use DAS / EDAC diagnostics


1. Enter EDAC from NetStar. Start failure tree for diagnostics g uide for W211
COMAND Telematics. At this point is the failure tree much help?
YES NO
2. With DAS perform short test; are there any codes? YES NO
3. List any current codes that are found.

4. If you have fault codes, do they point to any one component? YES NO
5. If so, which one? __________________________________________________

Research and analyze


1. Is there any DTB information on NetStar for the codes you have for this ve hicle?
(type in codes in search box) YES NO
2. If so, what is the DTB Date a nd order number?

3. Did any DTBs found apply to the problem? YES NO
4. Does SDS give any testing for codes D10__ and D117? YES NO

Note; at this time in DAS there are a few blank screens coming up it in
the testing process. For this workshop module answer Yes when these
screens appear and continue testing.

5. Enter into fault code D117. Does Vacant show up in any of the position for
components that are on this vehicle? YES NO
6. Enter into any of the components that show Vacant. A test screen shows next
and then a *note screen that states the following points are the main cause of
the break. Record the all 5 possible causes.

7. Go back to fault codes and enter D10__. What component is listed as MOST
predecessor? ____________________________________________________
8. Continue with F2. The list of possible test now appears.

Testing
1. Focus on testi ng that pertains to fault code D10__.
2. Continue in SDS with possible tests by performing first test. Does the wake-up
line test show any units not responding? YES NO
3. Note that some units on a 211 (CD Changer and Navigation) will fail the wake-
up test if fiber-optics are bad or system is not functioning.

4. Continue testing with F2. Do any of the tests listed apply?
YES NO
5. Back out until List of possible tests is shown again. Perform Check the MOST
connectors located between the respective MOST components. SDS has you
check the fiber-optic connector at? ____________________________________
6. Are the connectors in order? YES NO
7. Next perform the test Replace MOST control module with a passive connector.
Which component does SDS want you to bypass first?

8. Continue testing. Did the above component fail? YES NO
9. If above component passes, continue testing until problem is found.
