_ IT relates to any computer-based tool that people use to work with information to support the
information and information processing needs of an organization.
Example of IT:
Computers, software, network, structure, firewalls, fax machines phone systems, hard disk farms , wide
area network
- Information systems are interrelated components working together to collect process, store,
and disseminate information to support decision making, coordination and control in an
organization
- Information systems are made up of five components.
1) Hardware
2) Software
3) Data
4) People
5) Process
Hardware Physical components of technology (such as computer, keyboards, printers ... that you can
touch).
Software- Is a set of instructions that tells hardware what to do It cannot be touched. Eg: What
happens when you switch on your laptop/computer?
Data- is a collection of facts. Eg: your street address city you live in, no pf students in class, your mark for
assignment 1
People - From the front-line help-desk workers, to systems analyst, to programmers, all the way up to
the chief information officer (CIO) .The people involved with information systems are an essential
element that must not be overlooked.
Process - is a series of step undertaken to achieve a desired outcome or goal. Businesses hoping to gain
an advantage over their competitors are highly focused
- IT will reduce the number of middle managers because it helps managers be more producyive
- IT will change the managers job because it changes how managers make decisions.
