FOREWORD

This Indian Standard ( Fourth Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after
the draft finalized by the Builders Hardware Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil
Engineering Division Council.
This standard was first published in 1950 and subsequently revised in 1962, 1973 and 1981. This,
the fourth revision is being issued in light of the comments received from various users
organizations. This revision also makes reference to recently published Indian Standards for
various material allowed in the standard and hence gives the current designations for various
materials.
In this fourth revision the distance of holes in the hinges from the longitudinal edges has also been
specified along with the permissible tolerances ( see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 ).
This standard contains 7.1 which permits the purchaser to use his option for selection to suit his
requirements.
This edition 5.1 incorporates Amendment No. 1 (April 2001). Side bar indicates modification of the
text as the result of incorporation of the amendment.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with,
the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded
off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). The number
of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified
value in this standard.
