My grandad fought in the First World War.

Before I left he told me what it takes to stay alive

But nothing could of prepared me for what I saw.

New machines of war like the aircraft carrier.

Luckily they were mostly on our side. Mostly.

Before I got to Pearl Harbour, I've never seen a battleship in real life.

How they sailed majestically, guns striking the fear of their enemies.

There was a romance behind serving on these battleships, the embodiment of freedom and
democracy.

But in reality, many of brave young men serving them would meet their end at the depths of the
sea.

Everyone was affected by the war, every corner of the globe.

The human spirit drove us to fight where no one ever dared before in the skies amongst the
blistering fire of anti-aircraft guns.

The emperor dawns his heavenly blessing on the brave young men who serve his warships, many
with gleaming round eyes at the sight of the kido butai.

What we have started will be glorious, and mark the blossoming of the great nation of Japan.

After our attack on Pearl Harbour, people from all islands from the mountains of Hokkaido to the
shores of Okinawa, poured into the capital to serve our great nation. Japan will win the war, and
reign as the superior country.

That's what they told me, but the truth is many of us will die in smoke and flames. Instead of
adventure and glory, what we found was fear, and the only equalizer in war is death.
