INTRODUCTION:-

Home security has been a major issue where crime is increasing and everybody wants to
take proper measures to prevent intrusion. In addition, there is need to automate home so
that the user can take the advantage of technological advancement. This project presents a
model that will provide security to their home, office or cabin etc using GSM technology.
Keeping in view the rapid growth of wireless communication we are inspired to work on
this project. The idea behind this project is to meet the upcoming challenges of the
modern practical applications of wireless communication and to facilitate our successors
with such splendid ideas that should clear their concept about wireless communication
and control system.
The applications of SMS/GSM Based security system are quite diverse. There are many
real life situations that require control of different devices remotely and to provide
security. There will be instances where a wired connection between a remote
appliance/device and the control unit might not be feasible due to structural problems. In
such cases a wireless connection is a better option.
Even if the owner is away from the restricted areas. For this we adopted wireless mode of
transmission using GSM. Beside this there are many methods of wireless communication
but we selected GSM in our project because as compared to other techniques, this is an
efficient and cheap solution also, we are much familiar with GSM technology and it is
easily available.
In this project we use a proximity sensor at gate which is interfaced to microcontroller, a
keypad for entering the password, temperature/gas sensor for detection of tem/gas
leakage. First of all, we check all condition of the home and any type of problem display
in LCD and for indication beep the buzzer and LED indication.
MODE OF PROJECT:-

Sensing the entering person: For this case, we used IR-pair sensor at gate.

Password security: If any person want to enter in home ,then system ask for

password with the help of keypad.

Temperature/gas leakage : We used different type of sensor such as lm35 for

sensing of temperature rise.

Info indication: for indication it weep the buzzer and indicate on led.

PROJECT WORKING:-

First of all, we take the 220 voltage to give it to the step-down transformer (9-0-9).The
step down transformer converts 220V to 5V.But the microcontroller operates only on dc
voltage. So the ac signal from the transformer is given to rectifier which provides the dc
signal during which fluctuations of the power supply occur and a 1000 uF capacitor is
used for this purpose. This 12V supply is given to regulator IC (7805) which provides the
5 voltage.Again to avoid the fluctuations, a 1000uF capacitor is used.

When any person approaches the gate, system automatically asks for password .If person
enters the correct password, then the gate opens and access granted shown on LCD
screen but if person enters the password incorrect 3 times, then system checks the
condition and alerts using the buzzer and calls at a particular number previously dialed.
The password is entered using the Keypad which is a 4x3 matrix consists of 12
microswitches.

Using fire sensor(LM358),system automatically check the status of high temperature.

When the temperature increases, the low resistance path is activated and comparator IC
gives negative pulse which then beeps the buzzer 006 and displays the message on the
LCD about fire.

Window Sensor consists of IR LED and a photodiode. When the photodiode receives IR
rays from IR LED, then positive pulse is generated which 555 timer converts to negative
one, which turns the npn transistor(BC547) off but when there is blockage in the path of
IR LED and photodiode, then negative pulse is generated which converts into positive
one and turns the npn transistor on. After passing the collector, negative pulse is given to
microcontroller(AT89S52). Microcontroller gives a signal to driver circuit which consists
of Darlington pair, Relay, buzzer. Darlington pair passes the negative pulse which drives
relay circuit and relay switches from normal close to normal open due to energization of
relay. Now, the circuit is connected to series connection of handfree and GSM modem.
This pulse to relay then calls the last dialed number on GSM modem amd alerts the user
about any intrusion.

In our system, we used a motor driver system which consists of opto-coupler IC, H-
bridge having pair npn and pnp BJTs which prevents the back EMF generated by motor
and drives the motor in clockwise and anticlockwise direction respectively.

2. 5 VOLT REGULATED POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT:-

In this project, firstly we use one step down transformer. Step down transformer step
down the voltage from 220 volt Ac to 12 volt Ac. This Ac voltage is further converted
into DC with the help of rectifier circuit. In rectifier circuit, we used four diodes. All the
diodes are arranges as a bridge rectifier circuit. Output of this rectifier is pulsating DC.
To convert this pulsating DC into smooth dc we use one capacitor as a filter components.
Capacitor converts the pulsating DC into smooth DC with the help of its charging and
discharging effect.
Output of the rectifier is now regulated with the help of IC regulator circuit. In this
project we use positive voltage regulator circuit. Here we use three pin regulator. Output
of this regulator is regulated voltage. If we use 7805 regulator then its means its is 5 volt
regulator and

3. SENSORS:-

TEMPERATURE SENSOR

LM35 is very accurate and very good sensor to show the temperature in celicus. For body
temperature measurement we use IC LM34 sensor. LM35 is a linear temperature sensor.
To convert this output for the input of the ADC we use op-amp current amplifier to
convert the signal into 0-5volt dc.Here in this project we use op-amp op07 ( industrial
amplifier ).LM 35 is connected to the pin no 3 of the op-amp via 2.2k ohm resistor. Pin
no 2 which is ve input of the op-amp is set to the reference voltage by 1k variable
resistor. Centre point of 1 k ohm resistor is connected to the pin no 2 via 10 k ohm
resistor. Positive voltage is also applied to the one shaft of the preset via 3.3k ohm
resistor. 4.7k ohm resistor is also grounded from the 1k variable resistor. Pin no 7 of the
ic is connected to the positive 5 volt . Pin no 4 is connected to the common ground point.
One feedback resistor is connected from output pin to the pin no 2 which is 50 k ohm
resistor. So by this way we set the gain of 5 by this opamp. We set the minimum
reference voltage by preset ( variable resistor) and when temperature rises then output is
also increases with the gain of 5 and connected to the IN0 input of the ADC.
The LM35 is an integrated circuit sensor that can be used to measure temperature
with an electrical output proportional to the temperature (in oC)

INFRARED SENSOR

The basic principle of IR sensor is based on an IR emitter and an IR receiver. IR emitter will
emit infrared continuously when power is supplied to it. On the other hand, the IR receiver will
be connected and perform the task of a voltage divider. IR receiver can be imagined as a
transistor with its base current determined by the intensity of IR light received. The lower the
intensity of IR light cause higher resistance between collector-emitter terminals of transistor, and
limiting current from collector to emitter. This change of resistance will further change the
voltage at the output of voltage divider. In others word, the greater the intensity of IR light
hitting IR receiver, the lower the resistance of IR receiver and hence the output voltage of
voltage divider will decreased. Usually the
IR emitter and IR receiver will be mounted side by side, pointing to a reflective surface. The
further distance away between emitter and receiver decrease the amount of infrared light hitting
the receiver if the distance between the sensor and a reflective surface is
fixed.
4. LCD DISPLAY
Used to display the output of a program and to make the model more interactive for the
user.

5. RELAY:-

Relay is a common, simple application of electromagnetism. It uses an electromagnet made

from an iron rod wound with hundreds of fine copper wire. When electricity is applied to
the wire, the rod becomes magnetic. A movable contact arm above the rod is then pulled
toward the rod until it closes a switch contact. When the electricity is removed, a small
spring pulls the contract arm away from the rod until it closes a second switch contact. By
means of relay, a current circuit can be broken or closed in one circuit as a result of a
current in another circuit.
6. ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL CONVERTER:

A GSM modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates
over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone. From the mobile
operator perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a mobile phone.

A GSM modem can be a dedicated modem device with a serial, USB or Bluetooth
connection, or it may be a mobile phone that provides GSM modem capabilities.

For the purpose of this document, the term GSM modem is used as a generic term to refer
to any modem that supports one or more of the protocols in the GSM evolutionary
family, including the 2.5G technologies GPRS and EDGE, as well as the 3G technologies
WCDMA, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA.

APPLICATIONS :-

ANTI-THEFT REPORTING

When someone break in , Home-Guard uses GSM network to report automatically to 5

preset numbers: short message for control center, short message for 3 pre-stored mobile
phone, and 1 voice call.
The owner can monitor or talk to the thief. It has 8 security region codes and 1 fire/ smoke
code to distinguish. We can choose some certain regions to arm or disarm.

EMERGENCY REPORTING

Under emergency situation, the house member can press SOS key on the RF remote or on
wireless Door/ Window sensor. Home-Guard also uses GSM network to report to 5 pre-
stored numbers: short message for control center, short message for 3 pre-stored mobile
phone, and 1 voice call for monitoring or talking.

EXTRA FUNCTIONS

Fire/Gas Instant reporting: Wireless Heat Sensor, Wireless Smoke Sensor, Wireless Gas
Sensor, Wireless CO Sensor , Wireless Glass Break Sensor , Wireless PIR Sensor ,
Wireless Siren and Light Optional Wired Auto-Dialer for house phone.

ARM/DISARM BY SMS

In addition to use the RF Remote, the system allows the users to arm and disarm the
alarm system via SMS message from mobile phone. Users can also check the alarm status
anytime by simply sending an inquiry SMS message to the main unit.

POWER FAILURE REPORTING

When the main power gets cut off. Home-Guard can report to the preset phone numbers
immediately.
CONCLUSION AND FUTURE WORK :-

In the paper low cost, secure, ubiquitously accessible, auto-configurable, remotely

controlled solution for automation of homes has been introduced. The approach discussed
in the paper is novel and has achieved the target to control home appliances remotely
using the SMS-based system satisfying user needs and requirements.
GSM technology capable solution has proved to be controlled remotely, provide home
security and is cost-effective as compared to the previously existing systems. Hence we
can conclude that the required goals and objectives of our project have been achieved.
The basic level of home appliance control and remote monitoring has been implemented.
The system is extensible and more levels can be further developed using automatic
motion/glass breaking detectors so the solution can be integrated with these and other
detection systems.
In future the system will be small box combining the PC and GSM modem. The hardware
will be self contained and cannot be prone to electric failure. This appliance will have its
own encapsulated UPS and charging system.
