(14th India Conference of WAVES) & Srimaharshi Research Institute of Vedic Technology CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPATION Date: Jan 21st - Jan 23rd, 2011 Venue: University of Hyderabad, Prof. C.R. Rao Road, Central University, Hyderabad - 500 046, A.P, India Theme Ayurveda and Yoga are gaining global acceptance as the holistic sciences of healing in the last few decades. This is attributed to the fact, that the edifices of these holy sciences are based on axiomatic principles, which are highly classified, rational, systematic and practical. Unfortunately, World Health Organization (WHO) continues to recognize Ayurveda as an ‘Alternate system of medicine’. This has partly denied the Mother-of-Life Sciences – Ayurveda, its due glory. Further, a critical assessment of Ayurvedic and Yogic applications in the present milieu, factors down to four alarming issues, which if unchecked can bring disrepute to these holy sciences. They are: 1) Widely marketed medicinal preparations : Though it is a pride that Ayurvedic formulations have high market value, it has resulted in over exploitation of herbs and its consequent non-availability, lowering of raw material quality and environmental degradation. 2) Lower priority to the clinical potentialities of Ayurveda : There are more than 7000 rare diseases listed, for which only symptomatic cure is provided by Modern medicine. Ayurveda has the capability to manage any disease whether genetic, congenital, acquired, toxic or traumatic. But, even good Ayurvedic practitioners are not giving due importance to clinical medicines and are attracted towards medicine manufacture for mere sale. We need to begin with evidence based studies in the present day reductionist approach to propagate the applicative wonders of Ayurveda. 3) Absence of appropriate Ayurvedic Research methodologies : The present Ayurvedic research projects are aiming at discovering/treating diseases, which are contrary to the basic principle of Ayurveda – ‘Treating the patient rather than the disease.’ The lack of lucid research methodologies tailored to the principles of Ayurveda has further impeded the advancement of its research. This calls for an urgent need to redefine & redesign the Ayurvedic research processes. 4) Yoga propagated for exercise rather than for spiritual enlightenment : Ashtangayoga is an integral blend of nobility and excellence of existence. It is a divine tool for individual and social reconstruction, deeply rooted in Sarva Bhauma Mahapradha. It is a panacea for all maladies of mankind. But, in the present day Yoga is propagated as a mere exercise process. This is a disservice and sacrilege, to this noble system. By worshipfully accepting the Vedic principles enshrined in Ayurveda & Yoga, and with due humility to any valuable information, knowledge or technology from any discipline, compatible with the ancient wisdom, we, at University of Hyderabad, embark on a noble attempt, and invite presentations from learned scholar and researchers, from institutions and as individuals, to present their authenticated research papers in this novel direction of unearthing “The Relevance of Ayurveda (including Siddha) and Yoga, and their contemporary Challenges”. We call upon all to derive courage from the Vedic seers to express the truth and truth only!
