ENGG1400 Statics Tutorial #2 Due in Contacts 22/23/24 March 2016

Q1 (ENGG1400 1/2014 Mid-sem)

A Camaro sports car is to hang from the ceiling of an exhibition hall. The car
weight of 17,000N that acts through point A, and is supported by cables BA
and CA. The ceiling is horizontal. Calculate the tensions in the cables BA and
AC

Ans BA = 7927N and AC = 12057N

Q2 B&F 3.67 Pearson Australia

A bulldozer is being used to demolish a wall. If the dozer exerts a

force of 9kN on the wall, what are the tensions in the cables AB, AC
and AD

Ans AB= 3.5kN AC= 4.08kN AD= 3.8kN

Q3 B&F 3.69 Pearson Australia

A 20kg mass is suspended by 3 cables, each attached to a 2m

high post. What are the tensions in the cables?
Coordinates of A (0,1.2,0)
Ans AB= 150N AC= 146.1N AD= 36.9N

Q4
You are on your first day of vacation experience working for a firm that
designs door canopies and shop awnings (See picture for a similar structure). A
There has been a failure on site, and you have been asked to calculate what
the moment at connection at A would be if the connection at C failed. The
awning must resist the wind force as shown. Use THREE different
approaches. Hint Use the FBD shown which ignores the connection at C
W = 600N
and assume all the moment generated by the wind force is supported by the
connection at A.
B 25
Ans Ma@z = +398.7N.m
R = 500mm

Q5 Figure from Meriam pg 59

Calculate the moment about the x, y and z axes due to the 100N
force.

Mo@x-axis = +1.464 N.m

Mo@y-axis = +0.633 N.m
Mo@z-axis = +4.73 N.m
