Fourth Semester B.E. Mechanical Engineering IA Examinations March 2017
Fluid Mechanics
Time: 70 Minutes Max. Marks: 030
Note: 1. Question No. 1 is Compulsory
2. Answer any 2 full questions from question No. 2 to Question No. 4

1. (a) State Pascals law and Newtons law of viscosity.

(b) Fluids which do not follow the linear relationship between shear stress and rate of
deformation are termed as ______________

(c) Calculate the specific weight and specific mass of a liquid having a volume of 4000 liters
and weighing 3000 Kg.

(d) The intensity of pressure P is related to specific weight w of the liquid and vertical
depth h of the point by the equation is ______________ (4 x 1)

2. (a) If the velocity profile of a fluid over a plate is a parabolic with the vertex 20cm from the
plate, where the velocity is 120cm/sec. Calculate the velocity gradients and shear stresses at a
distance of 0, 10 and 20cm from the plate, if the viscosity of the fluid is 8.5 poise. (9)

(b) Show that the gauge pressure within a liquid droplet varies inversely with diameter of the
droplet. (4)

3. (a) Show that in a fluid at rest pressure does not vary in horizontal direction but varies only in
vertical direction. (5)

(b) An U- tube differential manometer connects two pipes A and B. Pipe A contains CCL4
(G=1.59) under 130 KN/m2 gauge pressure. Pipe B contains oil (G=0.82) under 200KN/m2
gauge pressure. Pipe A is 2.5m above pipe B. The manometer contains mercury. Calculate the
difference in mercury levels. Draw neat sketch. The level of mercury connected to pipe A is in
level with center of pipe B. (8)

4. (a) Explain why viscosity of liquids decreases while that of gases increase with rise in
temperature. (4)

(b) A square metal plate of side 2m and 2mm thick, weighing 80N is to be lifted through the
middle of a vertical gap of 30mm of infinite extent. The oil in the gap has specific gravity 0.9
and viscosity 30 poise. If the metal plate is to be lifted at the constant speed of 0.15m/s, find the
force and power required. Consider the effect of buoyancy and weight of the plate. (9)
